A Mighty Girl - When 8-year-old Xóchitl Guadalupe Cruz López decided to create a low-cost, environmentally friendly water heater to help her neighbors in Chiapas, Mexico, she had no idea that she would become the first child to ever win a prestigious national science award! Xóchitl says that she built the rooftop water heater from recycled objects to give people in her low-income rural community an alternative to firewood. For her invention, the third grader became the first child to ever win the ICN Women’s Recognition Award from Mexico's National Autonomous University (UNAM). When she received the honor earlier this summer, the young inventor exclaimed: I never imagined getting here. It's something I cannot describe! Xóchitl says she was inspired to design an inexpensive solar heater to help decrease the local community's impact on the environment. In San Cristóbal, she observes, it’s very cold most of the year so if people shower with cold water they can get sick with respiratory illnesses and constantly have to go to the doctor... These are low-income people who don’t have the possibility to buy these heaters, so what they do is cut the trees to get firewood, which affects the world through climate change. So, what I did is make this project, this heater, from recycled objects that don’t hurt the environment.” She started sketching plans for a heater in her notebook, then gathered materials to make one, including black hoses, PET bottles painted black, black nylon, and recycled glass. I used the glass doors of a broken cooler to create a greenhouse effect, she explains. Her father, Lucio Guadalupe, helped her install it on the roof of their house, demonstrating that it could heat 10 liters of water to between 95 and 114 degrees, even in cold weather. Next the young inventor, who aspires to earn a doctorate in mathematics one day, would like to try building a larger version using solar panels and hopes she can find support from universities or researchers to continue her project. Her father, an indigenous education teacher at the local primary school, says that he and his fellow teachers have worked hard to support Xóchitl's aptitude for science but their resources and skills are limited: I’m very proud of my daughter because here in Chiapas it’s very difficult to excel in science... As teachers we don’t have that specialization and we’re finding out little by little how to teach the young ones. The truth is that we’ve learned a lot with her.
