SUMIDERO CANYON, CHIAPAS, Mexico The Sumidero Canyon just north of the Chiapas state's capital city, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, truly blew my mind. Declared a national park in 1980, the Cañón de Sumidero has high vertical walls of up to 2,600 feet (800 meters) in some places. The best ways to see the national park are by getting a birds-eye view of the canyon from the lookout points above and taking a boat trip to traverse the canyon at water level. From soaking up the island vibes under swaying palm trees in Holbox, hunting down secret cenotes and getting awestruck by one of the wonders of the world in Valladolid, roaming the rainforest and chasing waterfalls in Palenque, falling in love with the picturesque mountain town of San Cristobal, and swimming in the world’s most turquoise water in Bacalar The best way to approach this itinerary is to fly into Cancun and head north to Holbox.
