Avalon's biggest and most well-known hit was quite a departure from his previous Top Ten hits 'Dede Dinah' and 'Ginger Bread.' Both of those songs were up tempo numbers with very juvenile lyrics. 'I'll Wait For You,' a #15 hit in October of '58, was a gentle ballad, but with very teen-oriented lyrics. With 'Venus,' Avalon showcased a more sophisticated and mature sound, one that appealed to both teenagers and adults.
