Are your students struggling with addition and subtraction word problems? This problem solving teaching resource will help students learn to categorize one- and two-step addition and subtraction word problems as a strategy for deciding which operation is needed to solve them. A student reference sheet, an interactive notebook activity, two sets of task cards, and an answer key are included. All problems included require addition and subtraction within 20. The reference sheet can used to introduce the types of problems and can be glued into notebooks or stored in a math binder for students to refer back to as they problem solve. To complete the interactive notebook activity, students will cut out the rectangle and make three cuts along the dotted lines to create flaps. They will glue this into a notebook or onto a separate piece of paper under the words “Types of Word Problems”. As they solve the problems on the accompanying page, they can sort them under the correct problem solving type and paste them under the flap. This can be done as a whole class activity, in pairs, or individually after introducing the types of problems. If you wish, students can add additional notes, such as examples of key words or visuals to the front of the flaps as well. One set of task cards includes eight one-step word problems. The other includes eight two-step word problems. A variety of problem types are included in each set, allowing your students to practice categorizing problems as they solve them.
