This is a cheap, super accessible project that I do with my high school photography students to teach them about VALUE and CONTRAST - two key ideas for any photographer! Sometimes photography class can be difficult to manage because if they're not working on photo shoots, they need other engaging activities to keep them learning. This is perfect. It asks students to create TORN PAPER PORTRAITS - using paper from magazines, newspapers, found scraps of fabric, etc. Anything with white/grey tones/blacks (a range of tonal values). The steps in the project include: PLANNING - finding a portrait to use and print TRACING - they can use carbon paper/tracing paper/project it with an LCD projector to enlarge the image (I like to go medium size for this and blow it up a bit) COLLECTING - gathering materials COLLAGING It's great because it doesn't require any "drawing skills" - and so it's less intimidating for a photography class. Of course, you could also use this with an art class just as well! Also included is a rubric to make marking easy for you. Enjoy!
