Gray - 40153 Manchester Victoria 16-09-82 The driver looks pretty pleased to have this 40 as motive power for his parcels train (4J14 Preston - Red Bank CS). We were on a family holiday at Broughton-in-Furness near Barrow and decided on a day on the trains. Pete (my brother) and I walked to the nearest station (Green Road - about two miles from our chalet) and caught a DMU into Barrow. We had high hopes of some Class 40 haulage on the day, but we had to settle for 47509 (on a Liverpool Lime St service) off Barrow to Carnforth. Here we changed to a London-bound service with 87009 to the fore. Preston saw us take 47570 down to Manchester Victoria before heading off to Lime St behind 47055. 47488 then returned us to Ullveston where we were picked up by the rest of the family. We had a great day out and photographed some 40s but were completely bowled for haulage. 40153 remained in service until the 11th September 1983 when she was withdrawn with fire damage. She was broken up at Crewe Works during May 1984. RIP
