Nurseries are one of my favorite rooms to design. There's always so much excitement leading up to the big day and putting together the new room, especially for first-time parents! I know first-hand that having a baby can be really expensive and overwhelming. If you haven't heard how Joe and I started MegMade - it started by us desperately needing a changing table for our first-born and having no money to buy a new one. Don't worry - I'm with you guys. I find that some of my best projects throughout the years have come from when I've gotten scrappy on a budget, so I put together some tips and trick on how to get creative and decorate on a budget for your next nursery design: Leave Room To Grow Source: MegMade Instagram This one is more of a long-term budget saver, but when planning out a nursery, leave some room for your little one to grow up in! Choose patterns, colors, or even colors that will translate all the way up to when they're a pre-teen. This will save you the time and extra money of having to redo their room in a few years. Buy Vintage Source: MegMade Instagram I'm sure you were waiting for this one, but BUY VINTAGE! Buying vintage pieces and redoing them yourself is one of the best ways to save money anywhere in your house in my opinion. Vintage pieces bring so much life into the room and are a fraction of the price if you find them on places like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Here are a few of my favorite MegMade DIY Furniture Paint colors for a nursery: *Click Each Photo To Shop* Refurbish A Dresser Into A Changing Table Source: MegMade Instagram Changing tables can get expensive and eventually become pretty obsolete once your little one is out of diapers. Instead, refurbish a dresser into a changing table! I think I love the look better anyways, and all you have to do is find a dresser, add a few coats of paint, and buy a changing pad online! This is also super cost effective, because once they're out of diapers, you can take the changing pad off and use it as a regular dresser for their room. Add An Accent Wall Source: MegMade Instagram Adding an accent wall is a great way to add a pop of fun without breaking the bank! Adding an accent wall can be done by adding wallpaper or a fun pop of paint. I love wallpaper but do admit that sometimes, especially in a bigger room, it can get a little bit pricey. Adding it to one wall saves you a ton but still allows you to be really creative with your design. I recommend adding an accent wall to the wall the crib will go on! I find it easiest if the crib is on the wall that you first see when you open the door to peak in, so it's a win-win! Incorporate Hand-Me-Downs Source: MegMade Instagram Y'all - there is no shame in hand-me-downs, especially when it comes to a nursery! We restored or refurbished almost everything we've used for the boys' bedrooms and no one would ever know the difference. Take that glider that your neighbor no longer needs, use the old dresser from your parent's guest bedroom, or even find things around your house that you don't really use in that space and incorporate it into your nursery for the time being! Get Creative With Paint Source: MegMade Instagram Adding some new paint to a room is one of the biggest, yet cost-effective ways to change up a room, especially if you can paint it yourself! Let the paint be your fun pop of color or get creative with the paint to add some extra detail. Register For The Right Things Source: MegMade Instagram If you're on a budget, your registry will be your savior! Make sure you're strategic about the things you put on your lists - that can sometimes get you half of the way there. Add the things that you want to buy new and get crafty with the rest! Keep It Simple Source: MegMade Instagram I know when I was a first-time parent, I felt like I had to have way more things than I actually needed. My best advice when going about creating a nursery is to keep it simple! There's no reason for all the gadgets, expensive strollers, etc. - even if they ARE super cool to look at. Whether you create a fun and bold design or go for a calm and airy look, you can still make it simple. Add a pop of fun in somewhere and keep the rest pretty minimal! Don't Be Afraid To DIY Source: MegMade Instagram DIYing will save you a ton of money, and it can be a fun project to keep your mind off of just waiting for the due date! Whether it's reupholstering a chair, painting a vintage dresser, or making cute artwork to pull the room together, almost everything can be DIYed - it just depends on how much time and effort you're wiling to spend! Borrow A Chair Source: MagMade Instagram This is another money saver that can be so cost-effective. One of the most expensive aspects when putting together a nursery is the rocking chair. If you can borrow this from some other room in your home, get it used from someone, or even find a vintage one someplace it will save you a TON. You can always buy things like slipcovers to make it feel like your own to start fresh and match the space.
