Version française qui suit Alan Caswell Collier RCA, OSA (1911 - 1990) was a painter, commercial artist, illustrator, muralist and educator. He was born in Toronto and, with the exception of a residency in New York City from 1937 to 1942. His primary medium was oil, however he has done some watercolors, acrylics and ink drawings. His subjects are Canadian landscape, cityscape, mining, industry and portraiture. His style is realist with a focus on composition, texture, volume and light. Collier began to show an interest in art at age 12. From 1929 to 1933 he studied at the Ontario College of Art. He furthered his studies at the Art Student's League in New York in 1937, working at mines during the summer to fund his education. In 1939 he found work in New York as an advertising artist, but moved back to Toronto to work as a sheet metal worker in 1942 after marrying fellow Canadian Ruth Brown the year prior. He joined the Canadian Army in 1943, and upon his return from the war in 1946 he again worked as an advertising artist in Toronto, but focused more on his painting and less on his commercial art. His landscapes are known for their well-defined sense of form and strong compositions stripped of extraneous detail. In 1951 Collier started doing a series of paintings of underground mining, one of which is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. He was elected to the Ontario Society of Artists in 1952 and began teaching advertising art at the Ontario College of Art in 1955. The following year marked the first of many summer sketching trips taken with his family to various parts of Canada, including British Columbia. He began painting full time in 1967, and a retrospective of his work was held by the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in 1971. He traveled to the High Arctic to paint with the Polar Continental Shelf Project in 1984 and 1985. Collier work is represented in the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and the Frye Museum in Seattle, among many others. © 2019. Alfred Joseph Casson, OC (1898 – 1992) was a member of the Canadian group of artists known as the Group of Seven. He joined the group in 1926 at the invitation of Franklin Carmichael. Casson is best known for his depictions of landscapes, forests and farms of southern Ontario, and for being the youngest member of the Group of Seven. Alfred was born in Toronto to an English Quaker father and a Canadian mother. At age 9 he moved to Guelph and to Hamilton at age 14. The first exposure he had to art was at Hamilton Technical School, where he was asked by his teacher to demonstrate for the class. His father sent him to work at age 15 as an apprentice at a Hamilton lithography company. In 1915 the family moved back to Toronto. At the same time as working, he attended evening classes at Central Technical School. The first public exhibition of his work was at the Canadian National Exhibition, in 1917. He was hired by the commercial art/ engravers firm Brigden's, owned by George and Fredrick Brigden (brothers). In 1919 Casson moved to Rous and Mann where he was influenced by and assistant to Group of Seven member Franklin Carmichael to sketch and paint on his own. Carmichael and Casson then moved on to the first Canadian silkscreen printing firm, Sampson, Matthews Ltd. Carmichael introduced Casson to The Arts and Letters Club of Toronto, where he met many well-known artists, including other Group of Seven members. During the 1920s, Casson continued to paint during his spare time alone and with the Group of Seven. Alfred enjoyed watercolor and in 1925 along with Carmichael and F. H. Brigden (Fredrick), founded the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Color. After Frank Johnston, a Group of Seven member, left the group in 1921, Casson seemed like an appropriate replacement. Later in 1926, he was invited by Carmichael to become member of the Group of Seven. In the same year he also became an associate member of the most conservative Royal Canadian Academy. After Carmichael left in 1932 to teach at the Ontario College of Art, Casson became their Art Director and later their vice-president in 1946. In 1952, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Honorary Corresponding member. In 1924 Casson married Margaret Petry. His father died shortly after his marriage, and he had to take care of and support his widowed mother. After the ending of the Group of Seven in 1932, he co-founded the Canadian Group of Painters. Casson developed a painting style with clear colors and background designs. Alfred "retired" in 1957 at age 60, to paint full-time. A privately owned work of A. J. Casson's appeared on the May 26, 2008, airing of PBS's "Antiques Roadshow." The work appraised in the $25,000 to $35,000 range. A large oil on canvas by A. J. Casson, Street in Glen Williams, sold for a record $542,800. On November 23rd, 2016, A.J. Casson's Gathering Storm sold for $1,534,000 (CDN). Island Georgian Bay by Franklin Carmichael Giclee print on high quality cotton canvas Eco friendly UV inks Rolled canvas, not stretched Approx. 2"-3" white border all around left for stretching Securely packaged and shipped Franklin Carmichael Some of the finest of Carmichael's work is the countryside and rural buildings around his hometown. Like A.J. Casson, Carmichael documented our rural Ontario and its architecture. A member of the Group of Seven, his early period works use a rich paint impasto, glowing with colour. Carmichael loved the natural pattern that he discovered within nature, reflecting this love in his many works. Today these works still stand out as icons of Canadian art, placing him among Canada's finest painters, both in the medium of oils and also water colours. Franklin Carmichael, born at Orillia, Ontario. Went to Toronto in 1911 and studied at the Ontario College of Art with William Cruikshank and G.A. Reid and at the Toronto Technical School with Gustav Hahn; also at the Antwerp Academy (1913). Original member of the Group of Seven, 1920, and of the Canadian Group of Painters, 1933. A.R.C.A. in 1935, R.C.A. in 1938. Worked for a time at commercial art, then taught at the Ontario College of Art (1932 - 45). He then died in Toronto in 1945.
