Pros and cons of recycling to zero waste - tips to reduce the waste we create to limit the trash and plastic that goes in landfills and incinerators.
(skona hem via Space For Inspiration)So tonight I'm speaking on my second design panel in two weeks. Last week I was flattered to participate in the Washington Post's Fashion Washington anniversary celebration with local designer, Sally Steponkus (love her!), HGTV stars and designer extraordinaires Robert & Cortney Novogratz, and the evening's host, Mitchell Gold. I loved spending time with all of them and hearing what they had to say on trends and such. Wild how we all seemed on the same plane...which made it funny. I almost tried to think of some design controversy just to spice things up a bit :) Alas we all agreed that when it comes to design we all think that pieces reflecting the owner should be of utmost importance--personal decorating! No pics to share except one snagged from K street Kate : (K street Kate) Tonight I'll be at the Dunes, dishing on "Mastering the Art of High/Low Decorating" with Kelley Proxmire and Judith Carrig. More details here. Come by! Update: you can read about the night here. All these panels remind me of another variety that's been made a huge comeback in recent years...one that I'm naturally a little more comfortable with than its verbal twin--wood. Salvaged wood. It makes the most interesting type of paneling: (living etc) (Jute Home) Ok and this isn't technically paneling, it's flooring, but it's too awesome. Wine Crates...that you walk on: (via wide open spaces)

Name: Britain Spinney Location: Logan Square, Chicago, Illinois My boyfriend and I live in a one-bedroom apartment in the heart of Logan square that is about 600 square feet. We didn’t have much time to find an apartment and we had been traveling back and forth from Minnesota to find one. We already loved the location of this place and once we learned the building was a converted old hotel, we both decided this was the one!

Hand knitted Zig-Zag throw BUY AT OUR ONLINE SHOP darty and pike Summertime is here and whatever the weather, you will want to spend some time outside. Let's face it in the UK the temperature is likely to be a bit brisk at times. Unless, you are going to haul deckchairs to the park, a blanket on the ground as Dolly Parton (I think) suggested is much easier. This one is a wool mix and easily washed at 40 degrees in a washing machine. Here is a selection of what we still have available. Welsh Vintage All Wool Blanket AVAILABLE AT OUR ONLINE SHOP darty and pike Almost too good to sit on and now something of a collector's item, this genuine Welsh blanket from the Drew mill, is 100% wool in a lovely plaid design of light green and pink. Perhaps this one is meant for cuddling up to on the sofa. I'd suggest careful dry cleaning only for this blanket. Hand-crocheted Throw BUY AT OUR ONLINE SHOP darty and pike Hours of work has gone into crocheting this blanket. I love the light blue colour making this much more cheerful than the usual dark colours often used in crocheted blankets. It's a wool mix so can be washed in the washing machine at low temperatures. Hand Crocheted Bedspread/Throw AVAILABLE AT OUR ONLINE SHOP darty and pike This is more of a bedspread than something you would take on a picnic, unless it's a posh one. The work that has gone into making this is breathtaking. It's rare to find a hand crocheted item in such stylish colours since these things traditionally use up left over balls of wool. This is a heavy item but very warm and, of course, a unique item. www.dartyandpike.com

Part of Marcin Rusak’s signature Flora collection, the wall-hanging Flora Lens 65 constitutes a unique decorative piece that works well in a variety of settings. Based on discarded flowers carefully submerged in resin, this convex piece is entirely handmade in a labour-intensive process, in which everything, from collecting and processing the flowers to encapsulating them in cast resin, and to setting the material on a metal wall hanging system, is done by hand. The pieces are thus entirely unique and customisable in a variety of sizes, colours and finishes, from matte (satin) to polished (glossy), and from black to milky white, to various shades of honey, amber, rust and green, as well as fully transparent. Each piece is composed almost like a painting, with the artist selecting the botanical matter based on its sculptural qualities and unique colours. The convex relief form of Flora Lens 65 acquires a particular depth, with flowers floating just underneath the shiny surface creating a more spatial, three-dimensional and complex composition. A resemblance to traditional Flemish still lifes is intentional and almost unavoidable. The artist makes several compositions, and only when the effect is satisfactory does he translate it into the material. The piece will be shipped in a museum-quality wooden fumigated crate suitable for airfreight.
