Easter is just over a week away, probably time to start getting Easter baskets ready. Luckily these cute little Easter Egg Covers are a quick and easy project and would be a fun addition to any Easter basket. I originally shared these on Craftaholics Anonymous a few weeks ago. The covers fit over a regular sized plastic egg, the kind you can buy a whole bunch of for a dollar or two. I thought it would be a fun way to make cheap plastic eggs a little cuter. I made 3 different versions all using the same basic body pattern and adding different ears, wings, etc. to make them into different animals. First we have a little yellow chick. He has little wings and a tuft of feathers on top of his head. Add a little embroidered beak and eyes and he is done. This pattern would also make a cute little bluebird... or any color of bird you want to make. All you would need to do is change the color of the yarn. Next I made a little white bunny complete with long ears, a little pink nose and a fluffy white tail. Last but not least is a fluffy white sheep. The sheep has loopy wool, ears and a gray face. The loops are made by wrapping the yarn around a pencil as you crochet. This adds texture to the sheep wool. As you can see, the plastic eggs fit just inside of the covers. The bottoms are open so that you can put the eggs in or take them out easily. They should be snug enough that they stay in, but not so tight that they are hard to get in and out. I designed it to fit the eggs pointy side up. After you finish crocheting the cover just slip the egg inside. By simply squeezing the top of the egg cover, the egg will come out and you can get to the treats inside. How to Crochet Easter Egg Covers For this project you will need: medium weight yarn- Red Heart Super Saver or something similar in weight (I used Red Heart Super Saver in white, bright yellow and heather gray) G crochet hook embroidery floss- black and orange for the chick, pink and black for the bunny, black for the sheep yarn needle for weaving in ends and sewing together embroidery needle for stitching faces for the sheep: a pencil to make loops Instructions for Basic Easter Egg Cover: All of the bodies use the same basic pattern, the only difference is the loops on the sheep. The number of stitches is the same, you are just making loops too. The bodies are crocheted in a spiral, you do not need to join after each round. Round 1: begin with magic ring, 6 sc (6 sc) Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12 sc) Round 3: [1 sc in first stitch, 2 sc in next stitch] repeat around (18 sc) Round 4: 1 sc in each stitch (18 sc) Round 5: [1 sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch] repeat around (21 sc) Round 6: [1 sc in next 6 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch] repeat around (24 sc) Round 7-9: 1 sc in each stitch (24 sc) Round 10: [1 sc in next 10 stitches, dec across next 2] repeat around (22 sc) Round 11: 1 sc in next 4 stitches, dec, 1 sc in next 9, dec, 1 sc in next 5 (20 sc) Round 12: 1 sc in each stitch (20 sc) Slip stitch to the next stitch to join, finish off and weave in ends *For the loops on the sheep, rounds 7-11 make a loop every other stitch by wrapping the yarn around the pencil and then working the sc. Wrap the yarn around the pencil and work the sc, sc in next stitch, wrap yarn and work sc, sc in next stitch... Round 12 is worked in regular sc. Crochet Easter Egg Chick Pattern Wings (make 2) ch 6, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, ch 1, slip stitch to starting ch (same ch that hdc is worked in), stitch to each side of chick about halfway down For the tuft of feathers cut 2 pieces of yarn about 4 inches long, fold in half both pieces together, pull folded end through the top of the head to create a loop then pull the other end through that loop to create a knot. You should have 4 little pieces of yarn sticking up, trim them to the size you want. Embroider the face using satin stitch, a triangle for the beak and a few stitches together for the eyes. Crochet Easter Egg Bunny Pattern Ears (make 2) ch 7, slip stitch in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, hdc in last 3 ch, stitch to the top of the head For the tail make a pom pom by wrapping the yarn several times around 2 fingers and when it seems full enough slip it off and tie it tightly in the middle. Cut the ends and fluff. Trim until it is the size and shape you want and sew or glue to the back of the bunny, I just attached mine with hot glue. Embroider face. Crochet Easter Egg Sheep Pattern Work loops on body as explained above. Ears (make 2) ch 5, slip stitch to first ch, sew to sides of head Face Round 1: ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next, 3 sc in next, turning to work on the other side of the ch to create an oval shape, sc in next ch, 2 sc in next, slip stitch to join to first sc Round 2: ch 1, sc in the next 3 stitches, 3 sc in next, sc in next 3 stitches, 3 sc in the next, slip stitch to join to first sc, cut yarn long, sew to front, flat part of sheep head Embroider face. Now all you have to do is put some candy in some plastic eggs and put them in your new Easter Egg Covers. Add them to your Easter basket and instead of plain, boring plastic eggs you have a cute little chick, sheep, and bunny.
