About Keith Haring, Art in Transit: Subway Drawings with Photos by Tseng Kwong Chi: This highly collectible & well preserved 1984 Keith Haring monograph examines them much historic & seminal chalk drawings done by Keith Haring on blank advertising spaces in the New York City subway during the early 1980s. "An art book, a photography book, a collection of graphic jokes, a celebration of city life, a happening...'Art in Transit' is a collection of Keith Haring's subway drawings, which lights up the subterranean vistas of the New York City subways with radiant energy." (publisher’s statement) Soft cover; 95 pages; 1st edition 1984. Approximately 8 x 11.5 inches. Very good overall vintage condition with some slight shelf-wear. String spine; well-preserved. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Introduction by Henry Geldzahler with a statement by Keith Haring. Photo documentation by Tseng Kwong Chi. Artist Statement: “I have been drawing in the subway for three years now, and although my career aboveground has skyrocketed, the subway is still my favorite place to draw. There is something very “real” about the subway system and the people who travel in it; perhaps there is not another place in the world where people of such diverse appearance, background, and life-style have intermingled for a common purpose. In this underground environment, one can often feel a sense of oppression and struggle in the vast assortment of faces. It is in this context that an expression of hope and beauty carries the greatest rewards.“ (source: Keith Haring Foundation). Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist known for his illustrative depictions of figures and symbols. His white chalk drawings could often been found on the blank poster marquees in New York’s public spaces and subways. “I don't think art is propaganda,” he once stated. “It should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.” Born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, PA, he grew up in neighboring Kutztown, where he was inspired to draw from an early age by Walt Disney cartoons and his father who was an amateur cartoonist. After briefly studying commercial art in Pittsburgh, Haring came across a show of the works of Pierre Alechinksy and decided to pursue a career in fine art instead. He moved to New York in the late 1970s to attend the School of Visual Arts, and soon immersed himself in the city’s graffiti culture. By the mid-1980s, he had befriended fellow artists Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and collaborated with celebrities like the singer Grace Jones. Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988, Haring’s prodigious career was brief, and he died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990 at the age of 31. Before his death, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation, a non-profit committed to raising awareness of the illness through art programing and community outreach. Throughout his career, Haring made his art widely available through the location of his murals, as well as through the Pop Shop—Haring's own storefront which he used to sell his memorabilia. The artist’s mural Crack is Wack (1986), can still be seen today on a retaining wall along FDR Drive in Manhattan. Haring’s works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Sidney Herbert Sime's art seems to capture the point at which a dream becomes a nightmare.
Hi! My name is Miles Johnston. I got into practicing drawing seriously around 11 years ago when I was 13. I was a frequent poster on a forum that was pretty popular back in the day called Conceptart.org, with dreams of working in the film and games industry. As time went on I fell more and more in love with drawing as an end itself. Now I am trying to move into the fine art world, by growing my presence online on Instagram and Reddit. This year I have been pretty fortunate and just booked my first solo show next year at a gallery called Last Rites in New York.

About Captivating lithograph of Fingerprint scan with facial elements by artist Joe Testa-Secca (American, b. 1945), C. 1990. #155/175. Signed lower right. Presented in metal frame and mat. Shipped without glass. Image size: 33.75"H x 25"W. Joe Testa-Secca art has been an important artistic force in the art world for decades. His works are well-represented in private and corporate collections, primarily in the Central Florida area but throughout America as well. Testa-Secca has been painting in a variety of modes for more than 60 years. As a child, he enjoyed drawing and painting so having parents that supported him in this pastime gave him lots of room to nurture as a budding artist. He became serious about making art a career during his service in the Navy when he was given the job of medical illustrator at the San Diego Naval Hospital. Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1954, he went on to get both his bachelors and masters degrees in art from the University of Georgia. When he returned to Tampa, he set up a studio at his home and proceeded to paint some work on speculation and accept some commissions. His popularity soared. It wasn’t long before he was invited to join the art faculties at both the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida. He chose the University of Tampa for its smaller class sizes and historic atmosphere. Over his 30-year tenure at the University, he rose to chairman of the art department and finally chairman of the division of fine art. After his retirement from University of Tampa in 1995, his title changed to professor emeritus. He continues to paint professionally to this day, “enjoying every minute of it.” Over the years, dozens of his collector fans have grabbed almost everything that came out of his studio. A handful of his retained work is now being made available for sale.
The Red Piano Art Gallery is South Carolina's oldest professional gallery of fine art. "Top-shelf quality," the owner says, "will always find a market."

Koshiro Onchi (1891-1955) Japanese printmaker, poet, publicist, book designer. Man of many talents. Founding father of Sosaku Hanga* today, as promised in before last posting, I'll try to show an overview of the many talents of this Japanese printmaker with the most relevant text borrowed from Floating World Gallery* (see end of posting). Born in Tokyo 1891, graduated in 1909 from the middle school for German studies in Tokyo and after failing examination to enter Daiichi Kotogakko (First High School), studied oil painting at Aoibashi branch of school of Hakubakai. Onchi entered Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1910, studying first oil painting and then sculpture. In 1911 he withdrew from the school and obtained a job as a book designer. In 1912 he was readmitted to Tokyo School of Fine Arts. In October 1913 he began planning the print and poetry magazine Tsukubae, created numerous abstract prints and directed publication of 7 issues 1914-1915. Onchi contributed cover designs, poems, and moku-hanga, in 1917 Onchi published his first collection of prints, Happiness (Kofuku). In 1919 he participated in the first Nihon Sosaku-Hanga Kyokai exhibition and in 1921 began publication of the general art magazine Naizai with Otsuki Kenji and Fujimori Shizuo. Over the years Onchi was also active in producing and promoting other poetry and print magazines to which he contributed poems, prints, graphic design, and articles promoting the idea that printmaking is a legitimate expressive and creative medium, not merely a means of reproduction. By 1927 Onchi had established a reputation as a book designer. In 1928, in the wake of Lindbergh’s trans-atlantic flight, was engaged by a newspaper company to go up in a plane and record his impressions of flight. The resulting book: Sensations of Flight (Hiko kanno). The coffee house and the dance room He personally designed over 1,000 books for publishers creating suitable letters for the cover of each one and published several books of his own poems or prose with illustrations. "In the theatre". In 1949 he received the first prize offered in Japan for book design. In the midst of his busy professional career in 1938 he contributed to One Hundred Views of New Japan (Shin Nihon hyakkei). A major force in the Sosaku-Hanga* movement and the leading abstract print artist of his time in Japan. Sometimes used the signature ONZI on early prints. *Susaku Hanga, the movement in Japanese printmaking re-introducing "draw it yourself, cut and print it yourself" away from the collaborative printmaking of Ukiyo-E or "floating world" printmaking, where professional cutters and printmakers executed the design in a combined effort. The movement started with Kanae Yamamoto's (1887-1946) Fisherman of 1904, shown in the Blog here*. For a detailed biography read here* and also: Merritt, Helen and Nanako Yamada.
