The inferno which engulfed one of Britain’s finest buildings has completely destroyed the world famous library designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
When a fire ripped through the Glasgow School of Art on May 23, it destroyed part of the Mackintosh Building, a beloved, world-renowned landmark designed by the Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. As smoke billowed from the century-old structure, students, teachers, and alumni stood outside and wept.
Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a true renaissance man who was directly responsible for iconic design that is still popular today. Discover what inspired him and learn about his myriad of contributions to interior design and architecture.
The place I went for school. It doesn't bored me after looking at this building so many years. It is truly and amazing building structure with many fine details. Listening to the bell in the courtyard that rings every hour is one of the things I like to do. TGIF!! Will be away, hope everyone has a good weekend !! :) See it LARGE

The Glasgow School of Art is a public institution that dates back to 1845. They held a design competition for their new building in 1896. A young draughtsman (draftsman) of the firm Honeyman and Keppie won the competition. Unfortunately (or fortunately as we may look at it now) the school did not have enough funds to complete the entire plan, and only the central and eastern wing were completed. It wasn't until 1907 that funds were found to complete the school. Mackintosh was invited back to rework the west wing design. The Glasgow School of Art is a Grade A listed building.
Full of bohemian personality, incredible gothic architecture and a huge list of hot spots (food alert everyone!), Glasgow’s West End is one of the best parts to explore and stay in. With everything in a walkable distance (a bonus when the Scottish weather brings a fair few showers), I couldn’t help but put together a little list of recommendations for everyone that’s heading to gorgeous Glasgow’s West End. Just a few weeks ago I was watching a documentary about Charles Rennie Mackintosh with my parents, which had been made to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth, and I covered my eyes at the images of the 2014 fire at Glasgow School of Art. A few days later my blog was mentioned as "further reading" about his Japanese symbolism for those attending a talk at a library in Kansas City, Missouri. Then, a week after that, I looked at Twitter first thing in the morning and wondered why someone was mentioning the fire that had happened four years ago. But it wasn't that fire, it was another, much more devastating one. I was so saddened by the previous fire that I did a whole month of craft projects inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, as my own way of dealing with how I felt about it. If you'd like to see these and more, click here. There is a major exhibition of Mackintosh's work at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, which I was planning to visit anyway this summer, so I think I will move that visit forward and go as soon as I can.
