A look inside the recently renovated and revamped Highland Park Bowl - the oldest most majestic bowling alley in Los Angeles
L.A.'s oldest operating bowling alley is a beautifully restored homage to its speakeasy days.

Highland Park Bowl in Los Angeles had been a booming nightspot with a illegal bar after opening during prohibition in 1927 but had fallen into disrepair in the 1980s when the walls began to crumble.
The iconic Hollywood Star Lanes in East Hollywood, where The Big Lebowski was once filmed, made bowling an iconic activity in Los Angeles. The city has
Nearly every town had a bowling alley in mid-century America, but nearly half have since shuttered. There's hope in West Hollywood though.
This large Oak bowl was turned by me in my Chicago woodshop in September of 2023 from wood I salvaged in Highland Park, IL. It has a striking natural bark rim with a wall thickness of 1/4" allowing the bowl to be sturdy but lightweight. It was turned when freshly cut, or green, so it has naturally distorted as it has dried. It's from a part of the tree where it split into two branches and as a result has stunning, feather-like grain. It measures 15 x 4 inches and could be a centerpiece or as a standalone display piece. The bowl has a thin finish of food safe walnut oil. It can be gently hand washed with light soap and water then dried completely. Soaking or putting the bowl in the dishwater is not recommended. As with any wood product, there are natural variations and possible inclusions and /or small fissures. These are considered part of the aesthetic of wood. I make all of my pieces in my workshop here in Chicago, IL. Thanks!
