Successful Planting Recommendations: Plant arrives in bare root state with little soil. Prior to planting, I recommend soaking in fresh water for 15 to 20 minutes. Then Dig a Hole 2x’s the size of the plant’s root mass. If needed, this is a good time to amend soil with fresh compost or your preferred soil mix. When planting, spread roots Horizontally rather than deep. It’s Important not to bury the plants too much, the crown should be 1/2-1” below soil line, (especially important with miniature plants). Make sure to Water in thoroughly and watch closely for the next few weeks until established. It’s ok to plant anytime the ground isn’t frozen ;however, Always protect new foliage from freezing temperatures. Depending on the time of year, New growth continues during growing season or will remain dormant when planted fall-winter. Hosta 'Mito-no-hana' is one of the most highly coveted hostas in the world, so we were thrilled to offer it in limited quantities for the first time in 2022. This eye-popping selection of the Japanese Hosta rectifolia comes from Japan's Tenjin Yama Bunen Nursery in Mito City. Hosta 'Mito-no-hana' forms a spectacular 15" tall x 2' wide clump of oblong green leaves with screaming yellow veins. The color of the veins gradually diminishes with summer heat, but returns each spring, or in the fall, if plants are cut to the ground in summer and allowed to re-flush. The clumps are topped with 30" spikes of dark lavender flowers. The best leaf coloration comes in open shade or with a couple of hours of morning sun. Do not grow this in deep shade or you'll just have another green hosta.
Hosta 'Christmas Eve' is a lovely sport of Hosta 'Night Before Christmas', shared by its discoverer, Hans Hansen, and registered by us in 2010. We've never had enough to share until now, but seeing it well grown in Hans Hansen's Michigan garden reminded us that we needed to make this available. Hosta 'Christmas Eve' matures into a stunning 2' tall x 4' wide specimen with nicely corrugated green leaves with a wide creamy white border. In late summer, the leaves turn green, dramatically increasing the vigor.
These beautiful, easy-care hostas are perfect for shade gardens. This list includes large hosta varieties to suit your yard's design and hostas with purple flowers for a spot of color.

The bright green leaf color, large heart-shaped foliage, and low-mounding form makes this plant ideal for a wide variety of landscape projects. Gentle lavender flowers grace the Sum and Substance Hosta in late summer, giving just another reason to love these hardy yard plants! The S&S Hosta performs best outdoors in a perennial garden when planted in part shade to full shade. It's important to note that Hosta Sum and Substance can handle some bright, indirect light or morning sun, but the delightful foliage will burn in conditions of heavy full sun exposure. Hosta growing conditions are best in early spring so the plant can best adapt to its surroundings. The Sum and Substance plant will grow best in a moist, well-drained soil medium. Unlike other Hosta, Sum and Substance are very large, reaching heights of 2 to 3 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide. As a result, they make large, bold additions to any garden. Blooming in late August, these popular shade plants provide color and texture to a landscape. Most commonly, these plants are used in shade gardens as specimen plants.
