“Resilience” By Ellie Falle In Oil on fully handmade stretcher In my monochromatic painting, I explore an offset composition, guiding the viewer's gaze towards the right side. Using a one-point perspective, the focal point is a solitary child holding a teddy bear whilst standing amidst an ambient space, with a secondary figure emerging in the background. The subject matter delves into the profound feeling of parental neglect, a theme deeply rooted in my personal experiences shaping my identity. Growing up, the concept of neglect was pivotal in shaping who I am today. Through this artwork, I endeavor to articulate the emotions associated with feeling abandoned, employing a nuanced interplay of light and value ranging from intense brightness to profound darkness. The intentional use of stark contrasts aims to evoke a sense of holding space, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the emotional narrative. During the conceptualization phase, I drew inspiration from stock photos while simultaneously envisioning the composition and desired values. Utilizing Procreate, I crafted a mockup that integrated references, blending elements to achieve the envisioned outcome. Although my intention was to include personal photos, the scarcity of images from my childhood led me to use alternative references. A crucial aspect of this piece is the presence of a teddy bear held by the little girl. In the absence of proper parental affection, children often seek comfort in inanimate objects, forming emotional attachments as a coping mechanism. The inclusion of the teddy bear serves as a poignant symbol of this adaptive response, highlighting the resilience of the young, who, despite being out of control in their circumstances, find ways to connect with the world around them. One of my key inspirations stems from Giant Haung's painting, "A Rainy Day in Chicago," crafted in 2015 using oil paint. Haung, an esteemed artist residing in Austin, Texas, doubles as an art instructor and boasts a commendable tenure as part of the Oil Painters of America, participating in numerous prestigious exhibitions. Haung's mesmerizing piece, characterized by its monochromatic palette, captivates a bustling cityscape. As an artist drawn to using color, I found profound inspiration in Haung's deliberate and bold brushwork, drawn to the sharp, definitive strokes that define the urban landscape with a singular color. Seeking to infuse my paintings with a similar sense of dynamism, I sought to incorporate Haung's intense, decisive markings into my own creative process. Embracing this influence, I aim to evoke the energy while infusing my unique perspective and use of color into my piece. This artwork also seeks to provide a visceral experience, inviting viewers to reflect on the profound impact of neglect on a child's emotional landscape. Through meticulous composition, symbolism, and personal reflection, I aim to convey the complexities of growing up in an environment influenced greatly by abandonment and simultaneously observing the resilient spirit that emerges in the face of adversity.
Artist Brad Kunkle lives and works in New York where he paints these extraordinary, dreamlike scenes of women swathed and shrouded in layers of leaves. The leaves often form the backdrop of his images functioning as water, wind, blankets, earth or perhaps all of the above. Via Arcadia Fine Art: Brad was searching for an unnatural quality in his paintings, and it was ironically discovered by reducing his processes to the elements of painting he felt came most natural to him. We wrapped up our chapter on color this week and our final projects might be some of my favorite that we’ve ever done! During our unit on color my students had the chance to create their own color wheel’s and man oh man was that a learning experience. For about 75% of my students that was […]

Like the Value Landscapes posted earlier this month, this lesson was inspired by Miriam at Arteascuola. However, these were "painted" with pixels on the computer rather than regular paintbrushes. Each year 4 student completed their own landscape in less than 10 minutes but still had valuable experience with using tone to create depth within a two dimensional artwork. After we observed and discussed the scenes created by Miriam's students the children took turns at making their own value landscape on the two available classroom computers while the rest of the class continued on with their set work. It was quick and easy but also meaningful for the children.
I'm obsessed with conceptual artist Sophie Calle's 1998 work "The Chromatic Diet." I wanted to see how it worked in the age of unicorn food.

Fiber artist Mana Morimoto spares no medium with her vibrantly stitched embroidery that spans sculptures, installations, weavings, and 2D materials like concert tickets and advertisements. Among my favorite of her works are these embroidered monochromatic photographs and paintings. An etching of Isaac Newton is overlaid with rainbows of light and Morimoto even goes meta by embroidering on images depicting other fiber artists, going so far as mimicking the progress of a weaving on an old photograph.
