There are several Native American legends about the origin of Devil's Tower. One of the most popular involves seven young Indian girls who are chased by a giant bear. The girls pray to the Great Spirit and a rock rises out of the ground lifting the girls up with it into the sky where the girls become the seven stars in the Pleiadies. Another version of the legend involves three boys who become lost and are pursued by a giant bear. The boys pray to the Great Spirit who raises them up on a rock. There is no mention of how the boys eventually got back down. In the version depicted in this painting a group of Indians are chased by a giant magic bear. Again, the Great Spirit raises them up on a rock tower where the Indians are able to fight back and defeat the bear as it tries unsuccessfuly to climb the tower (scratching the rock and leaving the vertical columns that we see today). Part of the fable includes an explanation of how the bear lost its long tail, but I no longer remember the specifics of that part of the story.
While debates over the use of Native American imagery and heritage roil on, Native creators and entrepreneurs are asserting control over their own visual narratives.

The history books will tell you that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the pilgrims in 1621. Not true. An interesting bit of trivia is that the first American Thanksgiving was actually celebrated on September 8, 1565 in St. Augustine, Florida.
