In my studio last month I explored printing with some plants from my garden - a perennial silver bush (unable to be identified) and the flower heads from my Italian Parsley. It wasn't a complex printing session, but just a relaxing exploration of a couple of plants I wanted to try before I did some garden trimming. The flower heads were rather thick and juicy, so I first ran one through the press with butchers paper to get rid of some of the excess moisture. I then printed with it - the first print is show below. The green colour is actually from the plant not from ink, it still had plenty of liquid, staining the paper. The first print The second print (the ghost print) captured the delicate structure of the flower head. As the plant was so fresh, it fell apart as I removed it from the plate. I had to use the tweezers to methodically pick off the individual soft seeds that stuck to the plate....a zen moment requiring much care and patience! The second print The third print was used as a base for another print, using a paper mask to highlight the flower head image, which was much fainter at this stage. The third print
Capturing the mesmerising tranquillity of one of Scotland's cherished natural wonders, this exquisite print invites the viewer to ponder the serene beauty of Loch Faskally, Pitlochry, through a spectacle of abstract impressionism. The artwork is a symphony of harmoniously blended tones and textures that reflect the enigmatic spirit of the Scottish Highlands. Cast your gaze upon the jubilant juxtaposition of cerulean blues and mossy greens intermingling with amber yellows and creamy whites, creating a visual representation of the loch's placid waters and the vibrant foliage that graces its banks. The bold strokes and thoughtfully applied swaths of colour evoke a sense of the undulating hills and whispering trees that edge this tranquil body of water. In this abstraction, the boundaries between land, water, and sky are playfully blurred, suggesting the reflective qualities of the loch and the fluid continuity of the natural world. The varying densities of paint application suggest depth and movement, while the subtle hints of underlying warmth seem to emulate the fleeting Scottish sunlight filtering through an overcast sky. A testament to the allure of Scotland's rugged yet picturesque landscapes, this print pays homage to the ever-changing reflections and moods of the loch, encapsulating its essence rather than its exact likeness. Perfect for those who appreciate the wilderness of the Scottish Highlands and the avant-garde approach of abstract impressionism, this piece is sure to evoke a contemplative atmosphere and add a touch of sophistication to any space.

Elizabeth Colborne never saw the Northwest landscape as a postcard portrait. Dividing her time between the Northwest and New York City, she produced a series of color woodblock prints of local landmarks like Mt. Baker and Bellingham Bay that bring a sophisticated cosmopolitan sensibility to the depiction a region still emerging from the surrounding wilderness. Now, Seattle-based curator David Martin and Bellingham’s Whatcom are offering the first retrospective show of Colborne’s work since her death in 1948.
Monoprinting is a form of printmaking that allows you to create unique, freeform printed images every time.
