These vintage Paris photos show just how much the city has changed over the past century, all while remaining one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
In The City of Lights' 2,200-year history, Paris has been the stomping grounds of some of the world's most influential thinkers, artists, and poets.
Tired of the endless series of black and white photos that were popular in the day, French banker Albert Kahn decided to do something about it. In 1909, he commissioned four photographers to take their cameras all around the world, and using Autochrome Lumière, to document in color what they saw.
About Silver Gelatine Print by Erich Andres, 1955. Andres was born 1905 in Germany and passed away 1992. He started his career as a photographer in 1920. He was one of the first photographers, who used a Leica. His images today are displayed in several museums, for example in the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. Andres was a contributor for Edward Steichens Exhibition "The family of man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951. All works of Andres offered here on 1stdibs are originals, printed and annotated by the photographer himself. His works showing the Ruhr area and its industry remind to the later works of Bernd and Hilla Becher.
