I love shuttle tatting. I actually prefer shuttle tatting to needle tatting. Shuttle tatting is a little harder than tatting with a needle. Since I've already done a needle tatting post I decided to do a post about shuttle tatting for beginners. Tatting is a beautiful old-fashioned art and it has been around for centuries.

Here's a short version: Wind 2 shuttles CTM with three beads on shuttle 1. SR1: Put a bead on the back of the hand before beginning. Work 6 ds with shuttle one. Turn the ring ready for the second half of the split ring, move the bead to the start of the second half of the split ring, work 6 ds, close split ring. Work SR 2 and 3 the same way. Work a ring at the top, hiding the thread from shuttle 2 inside the first half of the ring and adding a hook. There's a longer PDF version with pictures, you can find a link on the right hand side bar. This is a versatile pattern, you can vary the size of the thread, the size of the beads, the stitch count. For these I've used size 10 thread and a 6/6 count, but for others I've used size 20 thread and an 8/8 count. Here's another version: The bead arrangement boggled my mind a little. On shuttle 1 it should be 5 small beads, large bead, then one small bead. Shuttle 2 has 2 small beads. One small bead and the large bead on the back of the hand for SR1. The big bead at the start of the second half as before, the small one left to be caught in place when the ring is closed. A bead from each shuttle between split rings. 2 small beads on the back of the hand for SR2, and one bead for SR3.
This is an original PDF pattern by Gail Weaver Tatting. Difficulty: beginner (rings elements, adding beads). Materials and tools: 1 shuttle, crochet hook, earrings hooks, bracelet lock, needle, glue, metal split rings, beads (2 mm and 6 mm diameter), cotton thread size 20.
Materials: Perlè no 8; 2 shuttles; crochet hook; scissors; 2 beads; 2 hooks for earrings. Occorrente: Perlè nr. 8; 2 navette; uncinetto; forbici; 2 perline; 2 monachelle. Abbreviations: Ring = R Chain = C double stitch = ds picot = p Reverse work = RW Abbreviazioni: Anello = AN Arco = AR nodino doppio = nd picot = p attaccarsi = att. Chiudere e voltare = Ch. e volt. All steps of this project are shown in this video. Explanation/Spiegazione: These earrings are worked in two steps. First of all we work the rings, then the chain to complete the project. Wind two shuttles and work R of 4ds - 1p - 10ds - 1p - 4ds. Close and RW. C of 3ds. RW. *R of 4ds - join to the p of the previous R - 10ds - 1p - 4ds. Close and RW. C of 3ds. RW.* Repeat from *to* 4 more times. R of 4ds - join to the p of the previous R - 10ds - 1p - 4ds. Colse. Cut and tie. Pass the thread of a shuttle between the fourth and fifth C, tie it to the second shuttle and wind a bit of thread to make the last C, so work C of 15ds - join to the p of the first R - 15ds - 1p - 15ds - join to the p of the last R - 15ds. Cut the threads and tie them between the second and thrid C as shown in the images of the video. Complete earring with a bead on the top p before inserting the hook. Repeat these steps another time to make the second earring, but remember to cross the last chain on the contrary before tying the threads. Volt. *AN di 4nd - att. al p dell'AN precedente - 10nd - 1p - 4nd. Ch. e volt. AR di 3nd. Volt.* Ripetere da *a* altre 4 volte. AN di 4nd - att. al p dell'AN precedente - 10nd - 1p - 4nd. Ch. Tagliare e annodare i fili.

The pattern, "Giddy" earrings, is in the Tatted Jewelry book published by Annie's Attic. All of the patterns in the book were designed by me (yes, that's my name on the cover). The "Giddy" pattern has just one "floating ring" at the top made with 2nd shuttle, beaded picots, and starts with a bead inside a self-closing mock ring. Instructions are in the book. I'm trying to get more tatted items made for several art/craft shows that are coming up; 2 of them are listed on the postcard at the bottom of this post. I'll be demonstrating tatting at the events, too.
Free tatting pattern earrings .This site is for tatters and fans of rare needlework finds. All our products are 100% handmade and made in limited quantities.
This listing is for the PDF pattern only, not the actual tatted item or a printed pattern. Each earring is made of 2 separate parts: a main motif plus a narrow pendulum for some extra movement, hence the title, "Kinetic". You need to be experienced at tatting to be able to follow this challenging pattern, as it does not include any basic tatting instruction. This is an advanced level, two shuttle pattern which I have designed and prepared in PDF format. Although it may be tatted using either needle or shuttle, the instructions and photos are shown from the shuttle tatting perspective only. The 4 page file includes: *Written instructions in English, *List of supplies needed, *In-progress photographs, *A photo with stitch counts written on it. Techniques used include rings, picots, chains, joins, lock joins, bead picots, floating rings, split rings, lock stitch chains, and loop tatted rings. In size 20 thread the tatted earrings measure between 1 and 3/4 inches to 2 inches long, and about 1 inch wide. Materials you will need: - 2 tatting shuttles - Small steel crochet hook (for joins) - Crochet thread size 20: about 12 yards - Wide eye beading needle - Size 11° Delicas beads: 62 (size 15° seed beads work as well) - 4mm beads: 2 - 4mm jump rings: 4 - 6mm jump rings: 4 - Earring findings of your choice PLEASE NOTE: You are purchasing the pattern only.
