About The Artwork Teenager groomed according to rituals marking her passage to womanhood. The Yanomami Indians are regarded to be the last stone age people residing in the Amazon rainforest. They are the last human remnant of the noble savage, the natural ecologist who lived at peace in nature in an enlightened unity with all of creation. The land and the delicate ecological balance of the rainforest where they have been living for millennia have been jeopardized by the rapid encroachment of Westerners. Because of the mahogany and the strategic minerals abundant in the area, the Yanomami people have become pawns in high-stakes international games of resource protection and acquisition while deforestation, disease and assimilation reduce them to the state of semi urbanized impoverishment that other indigenous groups in the Amazon basin have experienced. This repertoire of images is an excerpt from my project on the Yanomami Indians in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest in the making since 1995. Photographic records of the Yanomami Indians are important to preserve for our children, the knowledge of one of the last Neolithic tribes in the world. I sell my work on this site in order to fund my project. Giclée print using pigment-based inks with archival substrates on fine art archival Hahnemühle paper. In this week’s eSkeptic, we present an excerpt from Frank Miele’s interview with Napoleon A. Chagnon, usually described as “the most controversial anthropologist,” hero to some, villain to others. His studies of the Yanomamö of the Amazon basin formed a cornerstone in the application of sociobiological theory to humankind. Chagnon himself helped found the discipline of evolutionary psychology and the Human Behavior and Evolution Society (HBES). However, his findings were disputed by other anthropologists who argued for the primacy of…
