About Stylish and very comfortable antique chair with perfect upholstery. If you are looking for an incredibly well handcrafted antique chair to grace your living space then this striking specimen could be perfect for you. We cannot think of a better condition nor better workmanship chair to read your favourite books or magazines in. This antique chair not only is of museum quality and condition, it also is extremely comfortable to sit in. This rare chair with its incredibly detailed carvings is well over 100 years old and for it be in this condition even amazed us. Somewhere in the 1980's it got re-upholstered with an excellent green velvet which too is in superb condition still. Former owners could not have looked after this armchair any better and it felt like a blessing for it to have found its way to us. This marvelous chair is as strong and stabile as the day it was handcrafted and the solid nutwood frame could not be anymore 'clean' either. The hand carved details in this great looking and very comfortable settee are of a quality and finesse that make them an absolute joy to look at. This kind of workmanship you just don't see anymore in this day and age. The striking pediment with its quiver, arrows and torch is topped of by a rare, triple bow. Other stunning details are the accanthus leafs that are folded over the armrests, the organically beautiful finials and the perfect cannelures in the legs and armrests. Mind you, this antique chair is part of a set and the settee/sofa we placed on 1stdibs earlier this week. Next week we are also looking to place on 1stdibs the matching set of four dining chairs and possibly also a drinks cabinet with open tiers (we are still negotiating about that cabinet). If you appreciate the design, quality, uniqueness, beauty and excellent condition of this Fine chair as much as we do then you will love our price. Squishy Thonet is a continuation of the Hi!breed family, sculpted from an an old broken Thonet bentwood chair. The series explores the personification of old chair frames with a sense of a life before. The character of the old chair is drawn and reimagined using plump upholstery, sculpted and hand stitched directly round the frame. There is an anthropomorphic happening during this process, an awakening of a life before. The chair frame, named Chair Nr.14, was pioneering in its lightweight design with a groundbreaking technique using hot steam to bend wood. It was an iconic design and was the first chair to go into mass manufacture in 1859. This is an edition of 10 including one artist proof. Squishy Thonet III.
