The Art of Felix Vallotton Three Bathers, 1894 Felix Vallotton (1865-1925), Swiss Fine Art Reproduction Full Size Reproduction: 11.75 x 7.25 inches This reproduction is a new, individually printed and proofed, superior quality giclee* process, fine art print. It is printed on 100% cotton rag acid-free, heavyweight fine art paper with a luxurious textured watercolor paper finish and archival pigment inks to ensure permanence. Created for collectors, it IS NOT A POSTER or mass produced print on low quality, inexpensive paper. Félix Edouard Vallotton (1865 – 1925) was a Swiss painter and printmaker associated with Les Nabis. He was an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut.Les Nabis (Nabi is the Hebrew word for prophet) originated as a rebellious group of young student artists under the influence of Paul Gauguin who banded together at the Académie Julian in the late 19th century. Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis became the best known artists of the group.Vallotton painted, wrote art criticism and made a number of prints. The many woodcuts he produced during the 1890s were recognized as innovative, and established Vallotton as a leader in the revival of true woodcut as an artistic medium. In the western world, the relief print, in the form of commercial wood engraving, had long been utilized mainly as a means to accurately reproduce drawn or painted images and, latterly, photographs. Vallotton's woodcut style was novel in its starkly reductive opposition of large masses of undifferentiated black and areas of unmodulated white. Vallotton emphasized outline and flat patterns, and generally eliminated the gradations and modeling traditionally produced by hatching. He was influenced by post-Impressionism, Symbolism, and especially by the Japanese woodcut: a large exhibition of ukiyo-e prints had been presented at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1890, and Vallotton, like many artists of his era an enthusiast of Japonism, collected these prints. His woodcut subjects included domestic scenes, bathing women, portrait heads, and several images of street crowds and demonstrations—notably, scenes of police attacking anarchists. He usually depicted types rather than individuals, eschewed the expression of strong emotion, and "fuse[d] a graphic wit with an acerbic if not ironic humor”. Vallotton's graphic art reached its highest development in Intimités (Intimacies), a series of ten interiors published in 1898 by the Revue Blanche, which deal with tension between men and women. Vallotton's woodcuts were widely disseminated in periodicals and books in Europe as well as in the United States, and have been suggested as a significant influence on the graphic arts. Vuillard being a good friend, and he was a member of the Nabis. Some of his most famous works were made early in his career during his involvement with Les Nabis (named after the Hebrew and Arabic term for “prophets”), an avant-garde group deeply influenced by the work of Paul Gauguin. The file is then printed with a high-resolution photo generation printer on a fine art paper. Most artists and working photographers today use the giclee process to produce reproductions of their original artwork and photographs. As with any original art or fine art reproduction, it is recommended that prints are framed and displayed under glass to prevent color fade or shift over the years.

PLEASE NOTE: We specialise in antique print reproductions, the originals of which can be centuries old. Please be aware that any minor imperfections noticeable on your prints derive from the original images, and not as a result of our printing processes. Some prints may seem a little grainier than an equivalent modern image; they may also show slight creases, smudges or tears that could not be removed during restoration without detracting from the original. In our opinion, these slight imperfections add to the authenticity of a print. Before buying, please check your selected prints carefully using the zoom viewing option. This should give you a good idea of what you will receive. Please note there may be slight colour or tone variations in the physical prints due to different monitor and device settings.
