Zinc countertops are a classic material for kitchen countertops & bar tops. This living metal is warmer than stainless steel and adds to a transitional decor.

Zinc is a pure metal that darkens over time. Zinc changes color and shows a white or dark gray mark when exposed to fingerprints, moisture, acids, and foods, This color change is an inherent property of zinc. We can patina the zinc to hurry up the darkening process and we can apply a layer of carnauba wax to the bare or patina zinc to reduce fingerprints and protect the finish. After installation, we suggest an occasional application of wax, similar to the way you would maintain fine wood products. If you are expecting the zinc to retain the original color and polish, please consider a different material. With the softness and the color patterns, zinc can look like it has been around for decades after only a few weeks. Applications: Zinc is great for range hoods, counter tops, bars or tabletops. How to clean: Generally, clean it as you would any other counter top with a soft rag or sponge and mild dish soap. Zinc Pricing: the price per square foot can vary greatly and here are a few of the reasons. Primarily it comes down to labor, installation, and how many details are spread across how many square feet of the project. For example a counter top that is 24″ deep is about the same amount of labor as one that is 18″ deep. Thus the 18″ deep counter top will have a higher per square foot cost than the 24″ deep counter top ( same labor spread over more square feet) Likewise, if we are finishing around an opening for an undermount sink, that work adds to the cost and changes the price per square foot greatly. This is why we prefer to give prices on a per project basis rather than per square foot.
I just realized that I didn't ever post on how we aged our zinc table top (see the topping a table with zinc post here) In this photo the new zinc is on the right. It looks similar to stainless steel. The piece on the left is after several coats of cupric sulfate solution. The cool thing about the zinc is that this isn't permanent. You can take 320 or 400 grit sandpaper to it and go all the way back to the shiny, original finish. The cupric sulfate is a blue color and it is a chemical. You mix this with water. The more water the less of a patina you get, but if you put it on straight with no water it turns almost black. This is the top of another table we did with one coat of solution brushed on. You can rub it on with towel as well.... We let it sit overnight and then wipe it down with a wet towel. You can also roll it on with a paint roller or cover your table surface with saran wrap which puts some interesting texture in the patina.... This is several coats of patina applied over several days. These are some edge pieces that ran down the edges of the table base.... If you just put your zinc on something and do nothing to it; it will age on it's own over time. The company we buy our supplies from sells wax similar to butcher's wax and we use that to seal it up. If your piece is going to get alot of heavy use the wax will eventually wear off, and then the patina will start to wear off as well. If you notice that it seems to be wearing off you can reapply the wax. Anything acidic can take both the wax and patina off completely and it will be shiny again.

Hello Everyone! Tuesday's are usually a bit slower paced for me so... I thought I would take advantage of the amazing light that was streaming into the house and show you a few of the things we did prior to the Holidays. Sound like fun? Let's start in the kitchen and dining room...now remember, We are not finished but I did do some quick decorating to get us through until we began working again. You know me...always putting the pretties out before the construction is complete:) Our kitchen island is now at about 75% complete . Just days before the kids started to arrive for Christmas...we installed the zinc counter top. And yes....we did it ourselves....and yes...I will show how we did it in a few days! I have one more small counter to wrap so I thought I would give you the tutorial then. I have had several emails about this project and promise to share the details. Ireally love how it turned out! I must warn you though...this was a bit tricky! My hubby cut down the legs on these barstools to make them counter height. We've had them for awhile...even used them in the house before the renovation. I kind of like them here in the new kitchen. What do you think? Should I keep them or still look for the upholstered ones I had been thinking about? So many decisions...but I have learned to take my time and not rush into anything...It has made such a difference! Hubby framed the fireplace out just before Christmas too. It's will be a pass through with a vent free gas log. I still have to decide what I want it clad in...so here it sits...waiting for me! I've always wanted a fireplace in the kitchen and dining room...I can't wait to see it finished! Soon... This is our nearly completed dining room...we are really close in here! Once the fireplace is completed we can install baseboards and have another ta-da to add to our list! YAY! We actually eat here every evening! Yesterday I had a few errands to run in town so I stopped into my favorite junk shop. These amazing doors called out to me and I had to bring them home! Can you say LOVE? That's just how I feel about these babies! They are nearly the same color as my reclaimed hardwood floors! The Living room and Library are coming along too! I promise to share more pictures of these rooms soon! I have practically spent all my time in the living room lately...basking in the sun! The weather has been so warm and wonderful...I don't want to miss a minute of it! I'll be back soon to share the how-to's and why for's on the zinc counter project... Until next time, Many blessing my friends!

What would that be you ask? Metal countertops. There are so many choices to make designing home so you try to think of different textures to keep things interesting. For walls we turn to wood or wallpaper. With countertops we normally go with granite, marble, quartz or wood. BUT......I have been checking out alternatives and came across Bastille Metal Works. Started by Christopher Lee Plummer and Katrina Plummer Bastille Metal Works is the leading producer of custom cast Zinc and Pewter countertops in the world. They are located in Savannah and New York. We are all familiar with RH tables covered in zinc but let's expand it a little.... Mantle Countertop Gorgeous metal ceiling Medallion Countertop Table These are all zinc examples but how about pewter? Francois & Co [pewter] Raw Urth Designs [pewter] Good Lord. What I learned about zinc is that it reacts to water, fingerprints, lemon juice and other things although eventually the marks blend together to leave the countertop with a beautiful dark blue gray patina. You shouldn't cut on it and there might be warping if you put hot pots on it. High maintenance but so is marble. [and me I might add] Zinc is about half the cost of pewter. Hence the reason I found most images of pewter used in commercial spaces like restaurant bars. More images of zinc Blayne Beacham photography O'Brian Harris Zinc hood....yes but only in my dreams probably:( Passion Decor Tumblr. Hubba Hubba this ceiling is sick! 5th and State/Debra Phillips Zinc counters that are antiqued with Amy Howard Home's solution There are zinc sheets [darn say that 5 times in a row] and cast zinc which I understand might be better [15 gauge that is at least .060 thick]. It usually cost between $150-$200 @ square ft. Cha ching. How many times can I use the word "zinc" in one post. Shazinczinczinczinczinc
