This beautiful butterfly was absolutely covered in nectar. It stopped to rest on a leaf after I was following it for about 5 minutes. I'm glad I got this shot as it is a beautiful creature. According to Wikipedia: The Cairns Birdwing (Ornithoptera euphorion) is a species of birdwing butterfly endemic to northeastern Australia, and is Australia's largest endemic butterfly species. Females have a wingspan reaching of up to 16 cm, males are usually a few centimeters smaller. A closely allied species, the New Guinea or Priam's Birdwing (Ornithoptera priamus) reaches 19 cm and is the largest butterfly species found in Australia, but it is not endemic. Males have a predominately black upper wing with emerald green flashes, however the female lacks the green coloring, having a plain black upper wing with white patches. The female is the larger of the two sexes. The larvae or caterpillars of this species breed on several species of pipe vine, including Aristolochia tagala and Pararistolochia deltantha. The latter species is more commonly used at altitude, with A. tagala used at sea level. Among the most colourful and attractive animals in the gardens are flying insects such as butterflies. Butterflies are particularly photogenic and can be easily found flitting around nectar-rich blossoms. Similar to other insects, butterflies have 2 pairs of wings, 6 legs, 3 body parts (head, thorax & abdomen), a pair of antennae, compound eyes, a proboscis and an exoskeleton. Butterflies undergo complete metamorphosis in which they go through four different life stages. This metamorphosis consists of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis) and imago (adult butterfly). An average butterfly species has an adult life span of about 2 weeks or less. It is a common misconception that butterflies live for only one day. Formal butterfly farm Like Penang Butterfly Farm is a great place to visit and is full of unusual and exotic butterflies, offering the perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with these beautiful airborne creatures.

A butterfly in my garden... Crimson Rose (Atrophaneura hector) is a large swallowtail butterfly belonging to the subgenus Pachliopta (Roses) of the Red-bodied Swallowtails (genus Atrophaneura). It is found in India and Sri Lanka and possibly the coast of western Myanmar, and is protected by law in India. In India, it is found in the Western Ghats, southern India (Kerala), eastern India (West Bengal and Orissa), and the Andaman Islands. Also recorded from Pune. The Crimson Rose is very fond of flowers especially Lantana. Nectar appears to be essential for the butterfly and a higher nectar intake is thought to increase egg production. The most striking aspect aspect of the butterflies behaviour is its strong migratory tendencies. During the peak of its season, several thousands of Crimson Roses can be found congregating and then they begin migrating to other areas. Higher numbers of these butterflies are seen during August–November and also during April–June. They breed up to 6–7 times in the year and it has been found to take only 39–47 days from egg to adult. The eggs hatch in seven days.
