Johnny Weir
Johnny at the end of Artistry on Ice in Beijing. Breathtaking photo from the fabulous Chinese Angels. Yes, of course we have more picspam. Please join me in wading through yet more photos from Johnny's Artistry On Ice China Tour: The Gift That Keeps On Giving..... Beijing Fan Meeting! At the fan meeting, Johnny dons the traditional Chinese coat hand-tailored for him as a gift from the Chinese Angels. The lovely Maria Ma was kind enough to give this report of the fan meeting via Twitter: We waited for him to return from shopping with Meg. Then he greeted us and thanked us for waiting there. After that, we gave him his gift: a traditional Chinese coat, which is specially made according to his size. The coat is stunningly beautiful on him and it fits him pretty well. We asked the Russian fans for help with his measurements, but the coat is still a little bit big for him. Then we handed him his Weibo account and password. [Johnny had tweeted before leaving for China that he wished he had a Weibo account so he could talk more with his Chinese fans. The Chinese Angels had set one up for him about two years ago, but when they saw his tweet, they figured maybe he had forgotten his password!] Then he did Q&A with us by randomly picking Qs. We asked him about details of his competitive programs, the fight between Ping and Tyoma, his wedding, married life, etc. He said Tyoma is so into torturing Ping that Victor sometimes has to sew Ping up. Then Tyoma does it again... Then we promised him another traditional costume, and he signed his married name on the new banner. He said it was the first time he had autographed anything using his married name. He promised to practice the new name more. Then we waved him goodbye. ♥ Johnny in his new coat. IDK what he's doing here, but all I can think of is, "Everyone has nipples." During the meeting, he agreed to let fans gather more measurements for future gifts... ...down to every last detail... More Beijing Beauty Special thanks to Maria Ma for making the rehearsal pics available to me via Facebook! They're also on Weibo via the Chinese Angels. Johnny at rehearsal in Beijing. Figure Skater Johnny Weir performs during the 2016 'Amazing on Ice' at Capital Indoor Stadium on July 15, 2016 in Beijing, China.

Johnny responds to questions from the media during the unveiling of his capsule collection for eDressMe.com. Photo © David Ingogly. So we're going to begin at the beginning of Ice Dreams, which includes a few pics of the "Future Stars" rehearsals (the part where those of us in the lobby heard the sudden commotion of cheers and applause and knew that Johnny had arrived on the ice, and also the part where the little girls hung all over him, but sadly we do not have pics of that), and then the glamorous red carpet, for which there was no actual carpet, red or otherwise, but nobody cared because all eyes were on Johnny and his fabulous dress collection as modeled by three impossibly tall and slim young ladies in really really high heels. But before we start (because once you scroll down, you'll be transfixed and you won't be able to hear anything I have to say or really do anything at all but feel your breathing slow to a Zen-like state while you gaze forever at these pics....), let me say the most important thing that I cannot believe I forgot to say yesterday, which is: Dear Super Agentress Tara, Executive Producer of Ice Dreams, who conceptualized this year's show as a "DJ Dance Party" and did a fantastic job of inspiring all the skaters, from the littlest on up, to really get into it and let loose on the ice: THANK YOU SO MUCH for an absolutely wonderful evening!!! And thank you again to Kori Ade for her superb choreography--all the group numbers were excellent and expressed the music so well. It was so great to see all the skaters owning that ice--loved it! OK! Here we go! First a few rehearsal pics: OMG how cute are they? :) Photo © David Ingogly. Johnny's here! Cue Beatlemania-style screaming.... Photo © David Ingogly. Johnny watches the Future Stars to see if they might benefit from some pointers from him... Photo © David Ingogly. ...and he seems pretty pleased with what he sees. Photo © David Ingogly. Now it's on to the red carpet event and the premiere of Johnny's eDressMe collection! And may I just say, speaking entirely as a non-fashionista who is still unclear on how to pronounce "tulle" (rhymes with "tool"? or "dull"? Wow. Suddenly a starfish-handed skater is in my head. But he doesn't look good in any of the dresses.) that the photos really do not do the dresses justice. In person you can appreciate so much more of the details, all of which have clearly been carefully conceived and executed for deliberate effect. For example, I didn't realize until I saw them up close that this dress is entirely sequined, but the side panels are a touch silvery for a slimming effect at the waist. All the dresses are beautiful. And so was the event: The designer with his models. Photo © Lynn Ingogly. Photo © David Ingogly. Johnny steps forward to answer questions from the media. Love the Loubs. ♥ Photo © Lynn Ingogly. And now begins the interview portion of our OMGIDIE pageant, the text of which is covered well in this article from the lovely people at Figure Skaters Online. So since they did all the hard work of writing stuff down, we can just sit here and look at the pictures (all photos © David Ingogly): Oh, wait! Just one more: LOL. More--and by "more" of course I mean "an endless stream of"-- Ice Dreams photos coming up! Actual skating photos! From the skating part! Yes! Johnny's dresses are now available for purchase only on eDressMe.com! At last: Pop Star On Ice is now available on DVD! Order yours today from the Pop Star On Ice website! Bonus video via The Advocate, from their post titled: "Possibly the Most Beautiful Ad for Marriage Equality We've Seen." The video was produced by an equality group in Australia, where nearly two-thirds of voters favor legalizing gay marriage, according to The Advocate, but prime minister Julia Gillard remains firmly opposed. I agree with The Advocate: This is one of the most eloquent illustrations I've seen of this simple concept: Love is love. copyright 2011 / Binky and the Misfit Mimes / Lynn V. Ten years after skating to Lady Gaga's song 'Poker Face' in the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships, Johnny Weir danced a tango to the same song on another national stage Tuesday night.
Weir, now 33, endured heavy media scrutiny over his private life during the 2006 and 2010 Winter Games.

Kayso I do realize that there are other things going on in the world besides Ice Dreams (or fond memories thereof)--even in the Johnny world, such as: (1) Peter Vidmar being named chef de mission ("chief of mission") for the 2012 London Olympics last week for about 30 seconds until the Chicago Trib's Phil Hersh asked Johnny--one of the few openly gay US Olympians--what he thought about having a vigorous anti-gay campaigner representing all US Olympians, and Johnny said, among other intelligent things, "Most people would have an issue if the chef publicly was against Asian-Americans or African-Americans, so it should be dealt with if the chef is anti-gay." And then the next day Vidmar resigned. OutSports' Jim Buzinski noted: "Weir got it exactly right and it’s awesome to see him take a public stance." #THIS #JohnnyFTW (2) Various photos posted of Johnny with ridiculously cute dogs! With fat bellies! Johnny tweeted: "Hanging out with my sons! Vanya is the brown one, Bon-Bon is spotted! My chunky little boys...." And Tara tweeted: "After a GORGEOUS lunch [with Mr. Louboutin]... @JohnnyGWeir is over visiting w Ziggy (Marsh's brother) ... " And then after I died from the cute for a while, I was pondering actually writing some, you know, words and stuff, that you could, like, read, but then Davey casually handed me a flash drive and said, "Hey, here's some more photos from Ice Dreams," and so never mind. And so I dedicate the rest of this post to Peter Vidmar and all others who seem to think that gay marriage or gays in general or OMG just the word "gay" signals the utter crumbling of civilized society as we know it, the death of all traditional values and morality, and the arrival of the Apocalypse (just in case you missed the Breaking of the First Seal, which was Sarah Palin joining Twitter), and also to all those--and you Smuckers know who you are--who have ever smugly whispered in the most unbiblical gossipy way, "Johnny Weir is not family-friendly," or its corollary, "Johnny isn't 'family-friendly' because Johnny is too gay." Me and my Ice Dreams photos beg to differ. (Actually, not "beg." More like, "stridently oppose you and your appalling, hate-filled, fear-mongering worldview which BTW is really starting to get on my nerves so here, have some adorable kid photos to go with the fat-bellied puppies and then STFU already." Oh, that's me, a straight person, being f*cking family-friendly. Deal with it.) Ice Dreams Come True for Happy Young Skaters When a Visitor Comes to Rehearsal :) Yes! Johnny's here! A few lucky little skaters are the first to realize who has entered the rink. Johnny takes a moment to chat. Then he turns to go greet the larger group across the ice. Aaaaaand they've spotted him.... "Johnny!" A hug for a thrilled young skater. Waving to more little skaters who are waiting to show Johnny what they can do. "Johnny! Look! Look, Johnny!" The young skaters finish their rehearsal and have group photos taken with Johnny. And then another cool thing happens. Tara and Johnny look at each other, and suddenly Tara takes off across the ice, Johnny right behind her, reaching for her hand. And the little skaters are treated to an impromptu pairs moment, much to everyone's surprise and delight: I love Tara's pink skates. I especially love that skating is still so much fun for both of them even after so many years spent training / teaching / coaching / falling / falling / falling ... And one more... The young skaters leave, and Johnny gets ready to rehearse with the other Ice Dreams headliners. All Ice Dreams photos © David Ingogly. Yes! Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. So I have propped myself up on my fainting couch, where I’ve been convalescing for days, stricken by some kind of viral scourge that has left me coughing like an escapee from an Edwardian TB sanatorium, just long enough to wanly fling some picspam out here before collapsing again under another paroxysm of hacking, because these are just too wonderful to wait until I am more fully recovered. Plus I am really terrible at being sick—pretty much as bad as I am at sleeping—and I get bored with the whole thing after about the first 24 hours, so thank Weirsus here are these amazing photos that will probably do more to cure me than any amount of rest anyway. BRB shoving the fainting couch back in the attic... But first: ICYMI, which IDK how that could even be possible since I keep embedding it everywhere and have probably personally emailed it to everyone I’ve ever met as well, but yay here you are, and even if you didn’t miss it, it’s worth rewatching a time or two or twelve: the official trailer for To Russia With Love was released on Tuesday! And it is beautifully done: Please share everywhere. This film is so important and not to be missed. Video link. And yes, of course we have a transcript and a few screencaps: Announcer: Russia’s new law banning propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors has created an international backlash. Title overlay: To ignorance...with compassion Mark Tewksbury: It’s taken a long time, but I do feel like Sochi is a bit of a tipping point. Title overlay: To brutality...with strength Johnny: It matters to you that your Olympics is going to be in a country that thinks of you not as a real part of society. Belle Breckhoff: You can take it quite personally. We should have kissed. I think that would have been a very big, history-making sort of thing. Title overlay: To fear...with courage Vladislav Slaviskiy: They attack me every evening... Title overlay: Some athletes stand for more than gold. (Female voice): This could have been the raised fist in protest. Johnny: An Olympic flame isn’t going to change the world. You have to change the world yourself. To Russia With Love. Johnny and Vlad. Speaking with Belle Breckhoff. “An Olympic flame isn’t going to change the world... ...You have to change the world... ...yourself.” While I love everything about the trailer, to me the moment with the most visual impact is the single second right before the screencap above. It happens here, from 00:42 to 00:43... ...as Johnny, seen only in shadow, performs on the ice under the impassive gaze of a Russian officer. And just to be clear: pretty much the entire time that Johnny was being criticized mercilessly for his decision to go to Sochi, he was secretly working on this project. So that months after the Games were over, the vodka-poured-in-the-streets protests long abandoned, and his critics off on other tangents, his efforts could help ensure that the spotlight would once again be focused on this human-rights issue enveloping a country he loves with all his heart. Because the world might forget. But he would not. Johnny Returns to Russia! 10-09-2014. At Sheremetyevo, where fans who have not seen him for two years await his arrival... OK, first you have to watch the video, even if you already watched it earlier today, because this: @misfitmimes @JohnnyGWeir That was very, very sweet. How to say this...so much love & mutual respect in one place. Just so lovely to see! ♡ — Berry Glitterfairy (@kiichigo82) October 9, 2014 So here you go: Video link. And now, the picspam! The photos in this first series are all exclusives from my dear friend Elena Vasileva, who not only took a zillion pics for Johnny’s fans around the world to enjoy, but also brought him a basket of her own beautiful homemade pirozhki. She explains: “In Russia, we have an old tradition—we meet the most dear guest with bread-and-salt. But there is something even better: pirozhki!” Accompanied, of course, with flowers. And Starbucks. ♥ A beautiful bouquet ready and waiting for Johnny... ...and he loves it! Chatting with fans... (Elena says here he is describing what a hard worker Evgeni Plushenko is on the ice.) ...and also being a good listener, as always. (Yay Starbucks!) With gorgeous sunflowers from Tatiana Edrenkina! Getting things packed up to go, as his driver has been waiting patiently... With all his gifts, including the basket of pirozhki... ....and a really big smile. On his way! This series is from Anastasiya Bochkareva’s fabulous gallery and her Facebook album, which she titled, “Sweet memories.” Beautiful, smiling, and presumably coherent (in Russian) after spending all night on an airplane. I love this. And this. Apparently a moment of serious business. Group pics! Via Anastasiya’s Facebook. Left to right: Liza Simakina, Elena Vasileva, Vera Chayko, Irina Volkova, Johnny, Tatiana Edrenkina, and Nadia Vasilyeva. And this time Elena takes the pic so Anastasiya can be in it (far left)! Via Facebook. And now he’s really on his way. UPDATE!! New exclusive photos series from Tatiana Edrenkina! Gifts of love await Johnny, among them beautiful sunflowers from Tatiana... ...and delicious pirozhki from Elena! He’s here!! Please do click for larger view so you can see the look on his face. ♥ A special gift from Liza Simakina. Tatiana explains: “She gave him her collection of figure skating stamps from all over the world, including the countries of which existence we didn’t even know. That was a wow! moment.” Johnny takes his time to savor this amazing gift. And then one more photo before he’s off to his waiting car. Bonus pics!! Via a very appreciative Johnny: “Moscow Baby! Thank you to my beautiful ladies who greeted me at Sheremetyevo!” Via Johnny: “Flowers and coffee, the way to my heart!” Bonus video!! An Evening With Champions has released the entire Saturday night show on YouTube, which is wonderful. Part 1 is here, and Part 2 here, featuring Johnny’s “Human” performance beginning at about 58:47. Johnny enjoys a conversation with fans at the Ice Dreams VIP after-party. Ice Dreams flashback: As always, Johnny was the soul of patience and graciousness at the meet-n-greet, signing autographs and posing for pictures for Every. Last. Fan. And I can firmly attest to this, being one of the very last to have a moment of his time. :) The lighting posed some challenges for getting good color shots (though Michele Mansoor and Stacy McReynolds did a great job with it!), so David chose to use the soft glamour of black-and-white photography to record a few moments from the evening ... And now, a tiny bit of Binky ... Yes, I am NOT wearing overalls. #winning With the fabulous and unstoppable Super Managtress, Tara Modlin. ♥ A picture with Patti. ♥ We also got to chat for a while--so much fun! Later I realized, "If we were in high school together, Patti would be one of the cool kids that I would be way too shy to talk to ... " Yay for no longer being trapped in high school! My turn--and off to the side and ever alert, David captures the nod of approval from Johnny for the no-overalls look. :) It had already been announced that the bus was there to take the skaters and their guests back to their hotel, so I was only hoping for just ten seconds to say hello. Yet Johnny took the time to autograph one of David's photos of him from Holiday Dreams on Ice for me to give to David. I said, "Thank you so much! You have to go!" And he said, "What? No picture?" And I said, "No, no, it's OK. You don't have time!" And he said, "Are you sure? Come on!" And David snapped this. ♥ All photos © David Ingogly. Yes!
