Original artwork description: SHIPS FROM US. Marble, H 32 x 18 x 18 cm (H 12.6 x W 7.08 x D 7.08 in), approx. 12 kg. One of six unique marble sculptures I made and exhibited on my first solo show at 12+ Gallery, Belgrade. I planned that these classical female torsos, synonymous for sculpture, should be exhibited with a digital movie, featuring their organic twist, and their (virtual) brutal crashing at the end. The project was intended to expose the demise of traditional arts. In accordance with my goal, I intentionally avoided the polishing of the surface, in order to emphasize the classical artwork by using a hand tool for it's smoothing. The sculpture has no stand in order to highlight its sensuous form and the beauty of the medium. Inside Sansevero Chapel Museum in Naples, you can find one particular sculpture with a very striking feature. One of the museum’s main attractions is an 18th-century sculpture with a marble net that looks so realistic. Visitors are in awe to see that the exquisite net is made entirely from a single block of marble. Only

Michelangelo's Slaves or Prisoners are exceptional in showing the master's approach to creating sculpture: to chip away the excess of marble as the powerful figures inside that were already contained within.

There's something magical about Matthew Simmonds' beautiful sculptures. He seems to carve the rock to reveal secret architectural worlds that were trapped for eons inside marbles and limestones—castles, palaces and cathedrals inhabited by invisible characters of some Shakespearian tragedy.
