Mixed media: plaster, pastel, pencil
I was in a mojo funk yesterday and didn't actually make anything to share today (probably due to the BEAUTIFUL summer weather going on outside and the fact that I was not out in it) so I decided to do a post on, "Things I am Loving Right Now" after which I will be going outside to enjoy the sunshine! This print these chairs looking for new kitchen chairs at present...love the juxtaposition between the farm table (which I have) and the modern chairs. A new chandelier may be in order too! this series I purchased the 8 part series on iTunes ($13.99) for my recent trip to Chicago. Did not want to stop watching. Classic story by Dickens and as always, beautiful costumes, rich characters and cinematography by the Brits for Masterpiece Theater on PBS. So worth the money. ,,,,, If you want to purchase on iTunes as I did, just type the words Bleak House in search. this class by my friend Mou this recipe this book I bought The Greater Journey on the recommendation of my friend Sally, from Delaware. The book by David McCullough focus on Americans that lived in Paris between 1830 and 1900. So interesting how the author weaves medicine, art and science into the timeline of history. Let me just say that I have used Google on numerous occasions to look up pictures of the paintings described in the book (love when I have actually seen one in person), additional information on the Franco-Prussia war as well as the ever valiant American ambassador Elihu Washburne (someone should make a statue of him). these shoes just bought them. on sale. fabulous with navy dress. enough said. this art card 8 x 10 art card with envelope for mailing this inspiration check out Philippa's beautiful wallpaper here this advice Now get out an enjoy the sunshine... (except for Deb who lives on the sun). Now that I think about it, I will be flying to Arizona next week and therefore I will be on the sun with her! I better start drinking water now! (personally, I think I might feel better about having to be in Arizona in August if we have bruschetta for lunch at Postino's... no one does it better!). cheers for a great week everyone! paula
Liger-Belair utilizes found photographs, botanicals, and patterned papers, which she augments with a range of drawing media.
2017 Topic 8: Assemblage Gerard Collas Welcome everyone, Darcy here with another topic introduction. this one is so quirky and open to limitless interpretation that you are guaranteed to have fun. This topic really does follow on from our last one. Assemblages are a cross between collage and sculpture, they incorporate found objects and purposefully bought elements. Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 7: Found Objects Challenge... The winner of Found Objects is: Chris from Loops and Lines Email Darcy to claim your prize. [email protected] I think 3d collage is the very best description for this genre of artistic expression. As with our found objects topic we owe a lot to the artists of the 20th century for giving this style a name and a definition. Artists such as Pabloc Picasso, Jean Dubuffet and Marcel Duchamp are all early exponents of this eclectic style. Here is Duchamps 'Bicycle' from 1951. Marcel Duchamp Assemblage requires a 'process' and that is the act of putting 'things' together to create a new object. From the start the style has had a slightly grungy edge to it, this is down to the components often being discarded or found objects. But there is a skill to this art style, one cannot just throw objects together, they much flow and have some harmony. this means when using found objects they should be carefully selected, just being 'found' is not enough. think about colour, shape, scale, theme.. Modern artists are still very much enamoured with this style. What do you think of this one, is it art to you? it is very much an assemblage, but the elements are very different to ones that crafters may choose. Here you can see a mattress, a cardboard coffin, a clothing rail etc. I am not sure that many craft companies will be bringing out a range of mattresses to cut up just yet, so let's look at something smaller. More vintage, but this time with a quirky twist and modern elements. Stephanie Rubiano Wings seem to feature a lot in assemblage art, they are a great way to add dimension and look great on things that would never usually have wings. Lindsay Mason Wings leads us nicely to birds, these are another heavily used element in assemblage art. They can range from real, stuffed, whimsy or outright quirky. Kim Collister How about these for quirky dudes, I adore how these have been made in tins for bodies and I may have squealed a little bit at the tiny spanner arms! Just too cute and jam packed full of details and personality. Could you use a little friend like this for your studio? Jen Hardwick This video has some great ideas for small box assemblages. This next piece is by Shirley Vauvelle, follow the link to see other fabulous pieces by her using ceramics and driftwood, aren't they a great combination? Shirley Vauvelle Perhaps you don't have space for a large 3D object, you can of course make any size that you want. However about keeping it fairly flat. you can see that this book cover does not take up as much room, but it is still very much 3d, and has had thought put into the assemblage of the elements. Georgie C Another almost flat but not really piece is this wonderful collection, carefully curated and framed it would be a wonderful piece of wall art. Bridget Hoff This next piece is so inspiring, a double spoon. Vintage, discarded objects, beautifully coloured and brought together. Trash to treasure. Branka How about some jewellery, you would never be late with a necklace like this. Recycloanalist ooh quirky dangly bits! One of these would look wonderful on an evening bag. Elizabeth Rosen This is something so simple but so effective, it is a take on papier mache. To achieve this look dip threads, yarns or strips of text into a glue and water mix and lay them over your desired shape. You can free form them or use a mould, but make sure to wrap your mould with plastic wrap first. once dried you can create your assembled suclpture. Janilaine Mainprize Some interesting thoughts on Assemblage from Gary Reef. How cute is this lil guy, bags or rather tins of personality. I just love the shoe brush hair, lol BranMixArt One last one, just because I love the use of wooden spoons. I may have to raid the kitchen draws! Can you imagine a tree like this filled with Zinski characters! Edwina Bridgeman So how will you join in, have we inspired you? I hope so, this is such a fun theme. you can raid your garages, sheds and drawers, mix and match old and new. use up embellishments, broken jewellery, cardboard, wood, grungeboard. How about adding paper beads or stamped images. Don't forget Seth Apter's wood chips, they would be perfect for adding to your sculpture. Don't forget to follow Darcy and Leandra's Pinterest boards if this topic pushes your buttons, you will see plenty more examples to whet your appetite there! Finally.. gentle readers... all the work has reached the Gallerie and I have it loaded in the shop 142 Bis Gallerie for pre sale.. I chose to call the show EXCAVATIONS because I noticed that I had been doing a lot of collage in my art journals.. layering the torn pieces, chewing on relationship issues and stressful events... metaphorically digging by ripping and tearing.. to find out what was really at the crux of the matters.. As If, Mixed Media Collage, 5 x 7 Caterina Giglio I used mono prints and painted papers.. old book pages and antique ephemera.. Detail from A Bridge Too Far, Mixed Media Collage, Caterina Giglio it took me a year and a half to work on this collection from my Ripped and Torn Series.. A Bridge Too Far, Mixed Media Collage, 12 x 12, Caterina Giglio and just now... I feel as though I might have a bit of understanding about the process.. Caterina Giglio, Two Sides Of The Same Story, 12 x 12 Mixed Media Collage But there is still so much to learn.. I feel quite humbled by the experience Detail from Natural Remedy, Caterina Giglio Caterina Giglio, Natural Remedy, Mixed Media Collage, 8 x 10 EXCAVATIONS Excavations is an attempt to rip through the layers and sort out the truths... The center always reveals what has been hiding there all along.. As I rip, tear and study, the dimension of the relationship comes clearly into focus.. and I am always reminded that harmony and congruence is born from chaos. Detail from Moonlight, Mixed Media Collage, Caterina Giglio Caterina Giglio, Moonlight, Mixed Media Collage, 8 x 8 and I have lots of new ideas about paper manipulation... Artist Allison May Kiphuth captures scenes inspired by her surroundings in Maine and along the New Hampshire seacoast by squeezing them into small wooden boxes scarcely a few inches wide. Her mixed media dioramas are constructed from layered ink and watercolor illustrations assembled with pins and string inside antique boxes. The content of each artwork varies from piece to piece from underwater scenes of sea life to magical tiny worlds populated by forest creatures. More
"Running With Scissors" is a found object assemblage which started with a block of wood which I added the many fun found pieces to create this one of a kind funky piece. Mrs. Peacock is the focal point of the assemblage with her legs attached to the vintage scissors and her lace skirt accented with pearls. I added many fun vintage found objects and game pieces and playing cards, vintage stamps, Popsicle stick with riddle, vintage button and tacks, 35mm film slide, paper coin nickel holder sleeve and tape measure). I then nailed and glued the conglomeration of all of these collected vintage items to form this fun whimsical art piece. This piece measures 5 3/4" tall from top to bottom and 6" wide x 1 1/2" deep. This unique art is ready to hang using a wire hanger I attached to the back of the wood block. I also titled and signed this art piece on the back. This would be a fun piece for someone that loves a playful, quirky piece of one of a kind art!

Jenny Fillius took a class on tin art and never turned back. Her whimsical metal collages use both new and vintage tins to evoke love and humor.
