What a week.
Avedon photographed the likes of Andy Warhol, Allen Ginsberg and the Chicago Seven protestors. The Gagosian Gallery in New York City is offering a glimpse of his work until July.

Was born on May 15, 1923 in New York City and died in Texas at the age of 81 on October 1, 2004. When he left for Columbia University, his father gave him a Rolleiflex camera, which Avedon used to take picture IDs of the Merchant Marine crewmen in 1942. Two years later, he was an advertising photographer for a department store. Alexey Brodovitch, director of fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar, discovered Avedon soon after, and was providing photographs for magazines such as Vogue and Life, where the models were more alive with emotion and character. Avedon left the fashion magazine to be staff photographer for Vogue in 1966. During his time with Vogue he would find projects of his own that he was interested in, eventually leading to a six year project that included portraits of those in the American west. These 125 portraits came together in a book called In the American West. In 1992, Avedon was the first staff photographer for The New Yorker. In 2004, a week before his death in Texas, he suffered a brain hemorrhage. It was during this time that he was photographing for the 2004 presidential election. On the Metropolitan Museum of Art Special Exhibitions page, there is an audio of Ronald Fischer explaining what was going on during the photo shoot. He says that Avedon wanted Fischer to be shirtless while the bees were covering his body. Fischer was skeptical at first and quite hesitant since in all the years he had been beekeeping never had he worked bare-chested in a bee yard. The assistants applied queen pheromone to Fischer’s upper body and head, and eventually the bees of that queen’s hive came down and calmly walked on his body. It is said that there were two photographs taken, one where Fischer had a painful expression in response to the bees and the other has a more calm and Buddhist-like expression, which is the one that was printed for his book In the American West. This book, published in 1985, included many people in the West “who work at hard, uncelebrated jobs.” This pose and expression permits me to think that this beekeeper is not only comfortable with bees but is almost crazy in trying to prove that this is his life, that he is a beekeeper. Even though I know that this was staged, it still wreaks psychotic, whether that is in reference to the photographer or the beekeeper. It is this crazy idea, although in comparison to some of the other photographs, like the mineworkers, they are covered in residue that consists of their job/career.

For Avedon's program is supraindividual. He wants to portray the whole American West as a blighted culture that spews out casualties by the bucket: misfits, drifters, degenerates, crackups, and prisoners-entrapped, either literally or by debasing work. Richard Avedon's "In the American West" By
