We spoke with Breckenridge Brewery Barrel Master Eddie Varela and Head Brewer Carl Heinz about Brewery Lane Series: Barrel Aged Imperial Cherry Stout. BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)? Its velvety mouthfeel and rich depth of flavors. BC: Where does this beer’s name come from? Brewery Lane is a specialty series of one-off beers that we can get really creative with. It’s also the name of the street that leads to our Littleton brewery. BC: Is this your “desert island beer?” Not “desert island”- but it would be equally enjoyable around a high mountain campfire or on the dinner table shared with good friends. BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less? Rich, malty, complex with dark fruit aromas and warming finish. BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer? This beer was a real challenge to create, both in the brew house and logistically as far as the timing and sourcing of raw materials. One major event that sticks out in my mind was when we got the rare (and brief) opportunity to acquire port wine barrels, and then we realized that we had to wait for the cherries to ripen. So even though we had almost everything we needed to brew, we were still waiting for mother nature. When the cherries finally arrived, I remember brewing 3 turns on a Saturday over more than 12 hrs, for approximately 200bbls of wort (a volume we can usually crank out in 2 turns and 8 hrs). It was all worth it. BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer? BBQ- ribs or brisket.
BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe? I developed this recipe with input from and Eddie Varela, Barrel Master and Todd Usry, President and Founder. BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)? I think the aroma is particularly interesting – with aromas of white grape and saison yeast esters, it blurs the line between beer and wine. BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less? A balanced fusion of diversity – white grape, oak, spice, esters BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer? Saisons are traditionally made using ingredients that happen to be on hand. For us, that included wheat, rye, and 2-row barley. The inclusion of something locally harvested is also common, and that’s where the white grape must came in. We sourced the grape juice from a winery in western Colorado. We bent the rules on the saison style, though. This one falls into the category of “super saison,” and even in this category, it’s big. It’s also quite dark after picking up additional color from the barrels. BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer? A big, traditional turkey dinner, roasted or smoked, with all the sides. It holds up to the rich flavors and excess! For a simpler pairing, I’d serve it with Manchego cheese. Read Review
It’s been 20 years since Bill Gardner launched the LogoLounge Trend Report—and here, he riffs on the takeaways from the latest analysis.
The English summer is thought to start when the elder blossoms end and the berries ripen. The citrus aroma floating down country lanes also heralds a bountiful harvest for the forager and home-brewer. Elderflower cordial costs more as the bottles get smarter and it’s seen as a luxury, which seems ludicrous to me, as I know that you can make it for next to nothing! Elderflower cordial is a wonderful base for all sorts of culinary treats............lemonade, sorbet, mousses, jelly, desserts, beverages, glazes etc. It is very easy to make, although you need to plan ahead as the flowers need to be steeped in the sugar mixture for four days. The flowers taste best picked early on a dry, hot day, and speed is crucial: they should be used straight after picking. The cream-coloured heads (or umbels) are tastier than the white, and don’t worry if they smell unappetising at first once they’re infused, the heady scent is delicious.Choose umbels free of discolouring and keep them dry until you’re ready to begin. Folklore: * One name for it is the Judas Tree, as it was thought to be the tree Judas Iscariot hanged himself from * To fell a tree without suitable protection could free a spirit called the Elder Mother to take her revenge * The elderflower was said to be a protection against witches, and a knotted twig kept in the pocket was a charm against rheumatism * Elderflowers were apparently never struck by lightning, and a cross of elder fastened above stables would protect the animals from evil Medicinal benefits * Elderflower cordials and elderberry wines are high in vitamins A, B and C * In A Modern Herbal of 1931, Mrs Grieves recommends an elderflower infusion, taken hot before bed, as a remedy for colds and throat trouble * Mrs Grieves swears by elder leaves as an insect deterrent. The foul-smelling bruised leaves around tender plants and buds prevent attack by aphids and cater-pillars, and gardeners can add a sprig to their hatband to ward off midges * Medical herbalist Christine Houghton says a daily elderflower infusion, made with fresh flowers, is helpful in preventing hay fever

We spoke with Breckenridge Brewery Head Brewer Carl Heinz and Barrel Master Eddie Varela about Brewery Lane Series: Imperial Vanilla Porter aged in Rum Barrels. BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe? This recipe, like all of our Brewery Lane Series recipes, is totally a joint project that includes input from management, brew staff, and cellar staff. The series is all about crazy good ingredients and treatments, and it’s always interesting to collaborate internally on these recipes. BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)? The complexity of the flavor is our favorite aspect – it’s robust with real, natural vanilla taste and notes of molasses, brown sugar, raisin, tobacco and coffee. It has a full mouthfeel and big ABV, but with a small bite. BC: Where does this beer’s name come from? The Brewery Lane Series is made up of 3 special releases a year. We started the series after we opened our new brewery in Littleton, CO at 2920 Brewery Lane. Vanilla Porter is one of our year-round, mainline beers. For this release we brewed an imperial version of Vanilla Porter, then we aged it in rum barrels with bundles of fresh, wet vanilla beans in each barrel. BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less? Complex with voluptuous body and a full, sweet, warming finish. BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer? S’mores by the campfire. Crème Brulee. Fine chocolate. Read Review
