Then & Now! Julia Butterfly Hill ascended Luna—a giant 1,500-year-old redwood tree near Stafford, California—in December 1997. She lived in Luna for 738 days, until finally descending in December 1999 when an agreement was made with Pacific Lumber Company that protected Luna and a 200-foot buffer zone surrounding the tree. Julia Butterfly Hill was interviewed…

The winged seeds of the Javanese cucumber are the largest floating seeds in the world. By hovering like a butterfly, they can bridge enormous distances, which is why they are even found on the decks of ships. Even without wind in a rainforest the seeds can be spread. The species is featured in the BBC documentary Life and drew the attention of several scientists who study aerodynamics and aircraft movements. The plant grows as a vine and belongs to the gourd family. The fruits are as big as a football, which is already quite remarkable on its own. Sowing description: Cover the seeds very lightly with sowing soil. Keep them moist at 25-30° Celsius. Family: Cucurbitaceae Scientific name: Alsomitra macrocarpa Common name: Javan cucumber Native to: Indonesia Sowing time: Whole year Difficulty: Intermediate Minimum temperature: 12 degrees Celsius Photo 2: From BBC documentairy Life: Plants

At the Joya Redonda Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, hibernating monarch numbers have multiplied tenfold. But is that enough to save the insect?
Our best lot yet! We've listened to feedback and added BIGGER butterflies, more VARIETY, and more COLOR! A great way to add to your collection or gear up for a big project! This butterflies mix includes a wide range of tropical species from all around the world, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and others. This assortment contains a wide range of species and colors making it great for both collectors and artists. Mixed lots generally include a mix of sustainably-sourced, farm-raised specimens and wild caught species, and what species are included will vary depending on what is in stock and the season. All butterflies are shipped unmounted with wings folded, UNLESS you choose the Framed/Spread option. Unspread butterflies will need to be hydrated before being spread/re-positioned. Ordering multiples of the same lot size may result in duplicate specimens. We now have spread and framed butterflies! The butterfly will come with wings open and mounted in a 4 1/2" x 5 1/2" riker mount frame. Riker mounts allow you to enjoy your butterfly framed or take it out of the frame to use the butterfly for photographs or other artwork (Just remember how fragile they are! It may cause legs, antennae, etc... to break off if you take the butterfly out). We strongly believe in and support butterfly conservation and only sell sustainably sourced butterflies. When you buy from Little Caterpillar you are doing your part to ensure a beautiful and diverse world.
We all love to see butterflies move around in our gardens, local parks, and open spaces. From the tiniest to the largest butterflies, these beautiful insects give our world a little bit more color. But what else do we know about the butterfly? Click to explore some fascinating facts about butterflies.
One day I found myself in a dream. I still can't believe that I spent several days among hundreds of thousands of these beautiful creatures in Mexico. This amazing butterfly is called the danaid monarch. It is the only butterfly that migrates. From North America, thousands of monarchs fly to Mexico every year to spend the winter, breed, and fly back. The duration of the flight is much longer than the duration of their life, and the butterflies often return after wintering already in the second generation and flown away. Great-grandchildren.
