Map projections are an important topic in cartography and are a challenging problem because there is no way to perfectly project a sphere onto a flat surface. The Alberts Equal Area Conic projection was invented in 1805 and was is still in use today by several government agencies. The advantages were that it preserves distance and area with respect to the latitudes. For someone desiring to travel west or east this is a useful map.

This is a prime example of the housing that would be given to a slave. Often times several slaves would live in one very modest cabin. Clothes could be washed here, and meals could be prepared. There was very little to do when the slaves were not working. What little time the slaves were not required to work they mostly slept,ate a very poor meal, and communicated with one another. Conditions varied from plantation to plantation.

This is a picture of an old colonial Anglican church. They followed Samuel Morris who was inspired by George Whitefields sermons who wanted the Anglicans to have a deeper relationship with the Gospel and Christ. The Anglican church was a huge part of the development of other religions.
This is a replica of the Puffing Devil, one of the first full sized steam locomotives. Richard Trevithick debuted it in 1801 in Britain. This engine would greatly improve transportation via railway and helped start the industrial revolution.

The Carolina Colony was once the largest colony in North America. It was all the land South of the Northern Carolina border. It was separated into the North and South Carolina Companies. This is my favorite, because it has my state in it.

Gold is what drove the Gold Rush. Gold is a very expensive material, but very nice as well. It was founded in California and people moved out there in the thousands to get gold.
This is a picture of San Jose, California. San Jose was the founded in 1777 as the 5th city in California. This is something that I just learned when looking at history during the 1770s. I looked into San Jose in particular because my mom was born there, and I always wondered why it is known as an important city. Today, San Jose is in the general Bay area and know for being close to Silicon Valley, which is the technology hub of our country.
