Lucien Simon - Maid in Front of a China Cupboard, 1900 at Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University California
Busy times! Thank you so much for all the good wishes! I am feeling so much better. Now I am playing catch up. But suddenly my calender is all lined up for the rest of the year! How can that be? It makes me so glad for all we got done before fall weather set in. One of those things was revamping a few cupboards, and switching things around. Over time, a lot of things inside get reshuffled and disorderly. The last time I showed this antique leaded glass English oak cabinet was at Christmastime last year. I didn't like the way things had organically evolved inside, but had no time to do anything with it, so I placed a lace panel behind the doors to camouflage it for a while, as shown below.... The other issue is the bad lighting for photos in this corner of my living room, so it rarely gets seen on the blog. I thought it was time for another peek before it gets all out of order again! A new vintage tin panel I found this summer is propped on top. The lamp is also vintage with a closeout botanical shade from Pottery Barn. I get asked a lot where I store my dishes, and the answer is really "all over." But this is one of the major dish cupboards in the house. For now, many of the white sets are kept together here. (For the grandkiddos that tassel has for years now been one of the most fiddled with objects in the house!) Now the cabinet looks good either open, or closed! I love the look of the open doors, but closing them protects so much better from dust. So now you know the rest of the story... (kinda). Thanks so much for stopping by! I'm looking forward to getting back to visiting you! Happy Weekend! Welcome to Home Sweet Home! Today I am sharing a thrifty find. I am giggling as I type, because this was one of those thrift store finds I thought had slipped away. Three months ago I saw this set of transferware with this ship on it at the thrift store. I loved it but, at $65 I passed it up and considered it gone. I knew someone would love it as much as me and it would be sold. Then my July/August copy of Victoria came. This was a feature on a coastal inspired table settings. Do you see the plate in the second picture down on the left side. Yes, it is the same pattern. It is called Fair Winds by Alfred Meakin . Here is a tablescape by Victoria magazine (July/August 2011) with the transferware. So, I visited the thrift store a week ago and there was no tag on it. They said they would get the price and call me. I couldn't stand it any longer and went into the store this Tuesday and the owner said they would take $30 for a full 8 piece place setting (47 pieces in all). It was in near mint condition, just a little crazing on the back of one plate. It list on Replacements Ltd. for $369.95. It came home with me for an early birthday present. I have a weakness for coastal anything, not to mention transferware with a ship on it. It is so pretty every piece has a different scene on it. I am not showing it all on purpose, wanting to photograph it in several post. My rule on thrift stores is usually only if you need it and it is under $5. If your heart desires it greatly and it is over $5 wait it out and see if it goes on clearance. Then get the lowest price you can wait for. Usually I have forgotten I want it when it is marked down. If I am still thinking about it and it goes on clearance then I must need to get it. Ha! Thanks for joining me at Home Sweet Home! Now, I would like to feature some wonderful post from last week's Home Sweet Home. Candy at The Little Round Table did not one, but six vintage holiday tables. Click the link to view. English transferware expert, Nancy, at Nancy's Daily Dish did a beautiful holiday table setting with a Paul Revere themed transferware. Click the link to view. Next, Stefanie over at Rose Petals and Rust showed off a wonderful dining room remodel. Click the link to view. Cindi over at Rustique Art made shims into place mats. Click the link to view. And last Concetta over at Concetta's Cafe made this beautiful Nova Scotia Blueberry Cream Cake. Click the link to view. You guys are amazing every week! Evoking all the romance of French chateau living, our Delphine Wardrobe will make a stately piece in any home. Crafted in reclaimed pine for an heirloom feel, this elegant piece has classic carved design details including a curvaceous pelmet and elaborate ironwork escutcheons. A hanging rail and adjustable shelves mean you can configure the interior to suit your needs. Ideal for clothing and linen storage, it would make an equally good toy or china cupboard.

Hello everyone! Today I am opening my cupboard doors to give you a better look inside to see some of my brown and white transferware. After taking these shots I did some tweaking on the cupboard but by then it was too dark to take better pics. The plate on the top row is new to my collection and it is a Vista plate by Mason from Coulson's in Summerside. The rest of my collection has been picked up here and there over time-yardsles,thrift shops etc. I love this platter and soup tureen . This little covered dish also came from Coulsons. This cupboard is on the other side of the room from the first. I love my teapot! This dish came from Winner's a few years ago. This vase also came from Coulson's one of my favorite haunts. Well, that is a pretty good sample of my brown & white transferware- I think I have a few more pieces around the house but I will show them some other day. Today,I am joining Rose Chintz Cottage for her Tea Time Tuesday Cupboard party. Thank you for visiting , Carolyn
For Fall when I showed you my kitchen, I had a picture of my Hoosier cabinet and realized I never done a post on it. It is so precious to me because my Mom and Grandfather got it for me as a Christmas present some 18 years ago. I found it at a antique store in an old log cabin house in Oakland IL (home of Tete). When we would go there, I dreamed of having it as mine one day. Well, as you know it did. My Mom and Grandfather had it delivered all the way to St. Louis for me. I was cleaning it up for Christmas I like it because it had all the bells and whistles. A bread box drawer, rolling pin holder, flour bin......and might I say it was pretty authentic, it had flour still in the bin! I love decorating it and it has always been a centerpiece of my kitchen. When I purchased my house, I had to make sure I bought a home with a wall big enough for it. I found some eyelet shelf paper in my hometown when the dime store was still open. The upper cabinet houses my collection of Cameo Depression glass. all the pulls, latches etc. are original Canisters for your salt, pepper, baking powder The inside holds vintage cookbooks and my Mother's and Grandmother's recipe boxes. I found some recipes I copied for my cousins that were their Grandmother's.ssshhhhh don't tell them they won't know they are in Germany! 3 small drawers, this one holds my baking items from my childhood. My little rolling pin, baking pans and cookie cutters. A great place to store my dish towels The side drawers, one holds my Mom and Grandmother's cookie cutters. The others are a silverware drawer and a drawer with all those recipes we saying were going to make when we cut them out of the paper but don't! a pull out cutting board At Christmas, I always tie on my apron on the left and my Mom's on the right. I remember cooking and laughing in the kitchen I grew up in with these on. I think I always wanted one because I remember that at 1515, my paternal Grandmother had 2. One in the kitchen and one on the back porch. My one cousin still has one of them I better go finish my decorating! Joining Colorado Lady for

It's time to do a little celebrating the Irish way, so I thought I'd try something a little different this year, and share some decor inspiration with an iconic kitchen staple ...the Irish Cupboard. These photos are from the March 2014 edition of British Country Living. I couldn't find the photos on line so I took a couple of snaps to share this wonderful example of a British Cupboard. This is another example from Carolyn Westbrook's Kitchen in her book Carolyn Westbrook Home. I've been a fan of these cupboards forever; the perfect display piece for an Irish/English/Welsh/Scottish cottage ...but you DO need a good size space. Look how similar these two cupboards are. The usual distinguishing mark is that they are a "Step-back" Cupboard. meaning the top Hutch is not as deep as the bottom dresser. This gives more room for larger serving pieces to be set out. Amazing Emma Bridgewater Pottery How about some Irish China to set a lovely Holiday table? Just the bottom dresser in stripped pine. A few French and Belgian pieces of Enamelware in Green. speaking of Green LOVE this, you can tell this is not just decor, but a functional piece of counter space. Another plus to this type of cupboard is that it can be used in almost any decor style. English and French Country Cupboards are usually a little more detailed and curved, while Irish Cupboards are usually less ornate with more straight lines. I don't change my sideboard all that often. My hutch is more of a display for special collections, while the kitchen shelves and other cupboards are for regular use. So the hutch gets a revamp only when I want a different look. Usually for a change of season. I've been doing some spring cleaning already. The weather has something to do with it, I'm sure. Scurrying back and forth, sorting and dusting, I feel like a character out of a Beatrix Potter tale. Or Mole at Mole's End with his brooms and dusters. I've also taken a page or two from Edith Holden as my inspiration. In her Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady of 1906-- another year with an odd winter--, she relates how " the mild winter has brought out the Hazel catkins, wonderfully early. . . ." Her wonderful watercolors of nature bring the outside in from the cold. I was surprised to see dead leaves rendered on her January pages, thinking that it's more of a fall thing, but that's exactly what's still outside my own window in piles on the ground. I've been wanting to gather my brown transferware together. Arranging my English cupboard is a bit like doing a puzzle without a picture for a guide. It's all trial and error, fitting bits and pieces here and there. Thinking I need this color here, and that shape there, until it all comes together. And of course there's only so much you can include. I have fresh shelf trim. The eyelet was given to me by my friend Ann Baird. The rest is a jumble of finds, some recent, some older, and all vintage. A few things stayed put, like my famous prize cow butter dish. I guess I'm not tired of looking at it yet. . . . Who would want a life without handles and spouts? . . . One down. . . . so many to go. But spring is still a long way off! Not that I EVER finish cleaning. Thanks so much for stopping by. I recieved many truly wonderful e-mails and comments in recent days, and I'm still catching up. What day is it anyway?? (Just kidding. . . haha. . . . . sorta.)
