Lately, collagen has become a buzzword in both the wellness and beauty industries, and for good reason. This essential protein is the building block of our skin, hair, nails, bones, and joints. But…
I drank the collagen Kool-Aid, ya'll. Or, the collagen coffee, I should say. I've been posting about it on my Insta-stories lately and have gotten several questions so I thought I'd do a full blog post explaining the benefits of collagen, how I use it, and why I've made it a part of my daily routine. First off, collagen is the main structural protein in the body found in connective tissues (like the skin). It helps with strength, structure and elasticity. Taking collagen regularly helps improve skin, hair, nails, tendons, joints and more. Being fresh out of shoulder surgery, I'm all for anything that will help improve my joints! And who doesn't want healthier hair, skin and nails? Sign me up! I've been using Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides for the past month and have already seen improvement in the health of my hair and nails! I put a single serve packet of the original, unflavored collagen peptides in my coffee each morning. It dissolves right in - you seriously can't taste it at all. I have heard that it doesn't dissolve as well in iced coffee as it does in hot coffee, though, just FYI. I know other gals put it in smoothies and even in baked goods. Each packet has 9 grams of protein. I track my macros and eat a really high protein diet (like, 140 grams each day), so I'm always looking for easy protein sources that don't take up other macros. Vital Proteins sent me samples of their coffee creamer packets in addition to the unflavored version. In all honesty, these weren't my favorite. They didn't dissolve quite as well - they left a thick, gritty texture in the bottom my coffee. The coconut milk base was a also a little overpowering....but I like the flavor of coconut, so I didn't mind that! I would probably keep using these, but they have 8 grams of fat which is a lot for my personal macro numbers. If you don't want to go the coffee route, Vital Proteins offers a ton of other option when it comes to collagen supplementation. They have green supplements, matcha collagen, beef gelatin, marine collagen, collagen beauty water (DYING to try the Lavender Lemon), whey protein and much more. Many are Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Sugar Free, Whole30 and Paleo approved! Collagen makes up 30% of the protein in the body and 70% of the protein in the skin. Naturally, our bodies don't produce enough collagen on their own and they cannot synthesize it, so it is important to supplement with it in our diets. Here are a few of the amazing benefits of supplementing with collagen: • Glowing Skin • A More Youthful Appearance • Joint Health • Tendon & Bone Strength • Healthy Cartilage • Increased Athletic Performance • Improved Digestion • Gut Health • Deeper Sleep Yes please to all of the above! Now that I've hopped on the collagen train, I'm hooked. If you have any additional questions, please leave a comment below or check out the Vital Proteins blog, Stay Lively - they have a ton of great information and content (like this recipe page). Have you tried collagen? If so, I'd love to hear about your experience and how you add it to your daily routine and diet. I think I'll be trying the Collagen Beauty Water next! By: Emily Oberg I was never a smoothie person. In the past, the smoothies that I had tried typically consisted of some dark green mush that tasted just as bad as it looked. It was either that or some overly-sweetened chocolate or fruity blend that I knew couldn’t possibly be good for you. But what I did like about the smoothie craze, was the convenience, the fact that they are easy on your stomach, and a good alternative to ice cream or a cold treat on a hot summer day. I decided that I needed to give this smoothie thing a try and after some experimenting in the kitchen, I finally found my favorite recipe. I’ll typically have this smoothie 2-3 times per week as my breakfast or as a post- tennis/workout treat. It’s easy to make, dairy free, low glycemic and tastes like frozen yogurt! I like very simple flavors so this may be a bit plain for some of you but feel free to substitute and add whichever fruits/protein flavors you like. Just be sure to use low glycemic fruits only as the wrong kind/too many can send your blood sugar levels through the roof. I also don’t add any greens to mine because I prefer to eat my greens than to drink them but if you’re not like me, throw in as much greens as you like. This recipe also uses a lot of health-boosting supplements which I’ll talk more about below. Lastly, I don’t use ice in this recipe because cold foods are much harder for our bodies to break down and digest and I don’t like cold foods/drinks in general. Instead of ice, I use frozen fruit which is equally nutritious as fresh fruit and also much cheaper. I blend my smoothie using a Vitamix, but any blender will do. I first add the fruit, then milk, then the remaining ingredients. I don’t like to use too much milk because I like my smoothie to be thick but again, feel free to modify it to your liking. Ingredients: (Serves 1) 1 cup of frozen organic raspberries 1 cup of organic coconut milk ½ scoop of Vanilla Bulletproof Collagen Protein Powder ½ scoop of Made Of Protein Powder (Vanilla Flavored) 1 scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides 1 tsp bee pollen 1 tsp He Shou Wu 1 tbsp L-Glutamine 1 tbsp of Bulletproof MCT oil 1 tbsp of ground flaxseeds 1 vanilla bean (scrape the seeds out of the bean) Many of you may be wondering what some of the above ingredients are and why you should bother taking them, and while they are optional, I do recommend incorporating all of them if you want to get the most out of your smoothie. He Shou Wu- A chinese herb used to promote longevity, healthing aging and reduce inflammation. He Shou Wu has also been used to treat diabetes, heart disease and other serious illnesses. However, there are warnings against taking the herb as it has the potential to be damaging to your liver, so please consult your health physician before taking this. Bee Pollen- A mixture of pollen, nectar and enzymes containing a wide range of antioxidants. The benefits of bee pollen include boosting your immune system, reducing inflammation and allergies, increases your body's absorption of nutrients, as well as an ability to stop tumor growth. L-Glutamine- An amino acid that helps to increase immune and intestinal cells, promoting healthy digestion and overall health. MCT Oil- Molecules that make up fats in things like coconut oil and goat milk. When consumed, our bodies turn MCTs into ketones which have been proven to burn fat and support brain health. Ground flaxseeds- Packed with Omega-3s, flax seeds are a top source of polyphenols, an antioxidant which protects against disease, cancer and other oxidative stress. They’re high in both soluble and insoluble fibre, aiding in better digestion and also contain protein, magnesium and manganese which promotes collagen production. Collagen- A protein that supports skin, hair, gut, eye, joint and bone health.
