During the long connection of the publisher with the watchmaker’s, the gold and silversmith’s trades, in the course of all his serious efforts to further their interests in every possible way, in his discussions with the most prominent members of these trades, such an earnest desire has always been expressed to him for a special collection of monograms to be engraved upon precious metals, that he considered the publication quite a necessity. Though there already are a good many works on monograms, they are mostly too generalised and whenever they serve a special purpose, that of embroidery for instance, they can hardly be applied to precious metals. To offer for these a handy and complete collection of model designs has been the chief aim of the present work. Whatever the watchmaker, the gold or silversmith and principally the engraver want in their respective calling, is here presented to them in reproachless execution and most easy to find. Both the watchmaker and jeweler are very often put in a position to help their customers chose a fit monogram for some article just bought. The customer by all means wants to see his own monogram put before him in black and white and if possible in various styles. In such a case the jeweler has to draw himself or to have drawn by his engraver the desired monogram, often at great expense and always with considerable loss of time, or he has to pick it out from the mass of stray monograms, that have been accumulated on his premises in the run of time. In most instances these monograms are in a deplorable state and most certainly form a quite insufficient and uninviting material. This great inconvenience is perfectly avoided by the present collection. In the original disposition of the first and second editions it contained five principal alphabets: Renaissance, Louis XIV, Louis XV, English and modern style completely arranged for every possible combination of letters, only excepted the rare letters X and Y. It further contained a vast number of fancy engravings, crowns, coats of arms, emblems etc. and had become a real handbook, giving plenty of information to the trade in all possible cases. The rapid sale of these three first editions together with their acquisition by many litographers, printers, manufacturers of china and note paper, decorators etc. beyond the very numerous subscribers of our own trades is a perfect and uncontested proof of its utility. The exceptionally favorable critique of the collection by all the prominent foreign and home trade journals has certainly much contributed to its great success. Within the six years, since our collection of monograms first appeared and during which time we always made a point of dealing with flat engraving in our “Deutsche Goldschmiede-Zeitung“ the modern style has made such progress that we found it necessary to prepare a new edition in this direction. Therefore two perfectly new alphabets of exclusively modern design are now appearing. One a simpler, the other a richer series, have been designed by an engraver and are thus fully adapted for daily use, when modern monograms are required. We thought it however desirable to get our designs not only from the engraver, but from real artists too in order to complete our collection by artistic designs as a means of imparting new inspirations to the engraver’s guild. Our collaborators in this purely artistic line were: Professor Peter Behrens of the Düsseldorf School of Industrial Art, Professor E. Doepler der “Jüngere“, of the Berlin Royal Museum of Industrial Art, the painter B. Wenig ot the Hanau Academy of Design and the painter R. Langner of Munich, for years already a member of our staff, and others, whose names guarantee first class designs of exquisite taste. The publisher makes bold to hope that the present enlargement of his edition of monograms will, apt to attract numerous new friends to the great number of old ones.
