#BEMORE excerpt from Sandi Krakowski- motivational advice on relationships and dealing with the tough stuff. How to have hard conversations.
Difficult conversations by nature are tricky. They are touchy topics that no one likes to talk about. They involve addressing differences of opinion, emotional issues, sensitive subjects or other potential reasons of conflict—anything we find hard to talk about. They are challenging because they require us to navigate through discomfort, uncertainty and a wide range of complex emotions. No matter how hard a conversation is, you can’t put it off or delay it forever. Addressing issues directly, providing clarity and seeking closure can help you gain trust, respect and also alleviate stress. But to handle difficult conversations well, you need to follow effective communication practices.

Kelsey Mora, Child Life Specialist & Therapist on Instagram: "There are actually many benefits to having difficult conversations with kids. Talking with kids helps them feel safer, more secure, and supported. They feel more comfortable asking questions and expressing their feelings. They feel free to be a kid amidst the hard moments. And it can also be freeing for parents to not have to put energy into protecting, hiding, or withholding from their kid. Instead, the family can embrace the hard thing and navigate it together. Life comes with highs and lows. Kids are often looking for support over solutions. We can’t control the situation but can control how supported kids feel. 🤍 #difficulttopics #talkingtokids #toughstuff #toughtopics"
Sometimes, for no good reason, conversations can get heated. Handling an unpleasant emotional reaction can trigger anxiety, cloud your judgment and make you react in unexpected ways. Losing your calm in such moments, reacting to the other person and saying mean things is a deadly mistake. You may not only lose the opportunity to bring the conversation back to normalcy and have a productive discussion, showing anger, frustration or judgment in emotionally charged conversations can potentially harm your relationship. Discussions get messy because many people lack the skill to engage in meaningful discussions. When their ideas are challenged or someone disagrees with them, they turn to knee-jerk reactions instead of calmly thinking through their head.
