I’m excited to share my power carved dough bowl tutorial. About a year or two ago, my dad was forced to cut down a 20 to 30 year-old maple tree in his back yard. A tree he stuck in the ground during my teens. I asked him to give me a couple of logs, thinking...

One of the easiest way to welcome the spring in your home is by using dough bowl. This item can be used to celebrate the spring season in your home.
This Extra large Dough bowl candle with wood wicks and soy wax candle, farmhouse candle, is perfect for your farmhouse decor, wood candle, scented candles with fruit and flowers or home decor. ***Wood wicks may be hard to keep lit, and may produce a low crackling flame! The candle and wicks are not faulty - just different from cotton wicks. Best practices: trim your wick to 1/8th inch, hold the flame to your wick until the wax starts to pool, keep your wicks burning until a full pool of wax is created. Worried? YOU CAN ORDER YOUR CANDLE WITH COTTON WICKS : please put this request in the note to seller when you order. ***Never leave your candle unattended! Botanical items are real and potentially flammable. This listing includes: One 20 oz, 50 hours burn time, vegan soy candle with wood wicks. Handpoured in to a handmade bowl; once your candle has finished burning, clean out the wax and use as a trinket tray for your jewelry, soaps or keys. Optional lengths available! Choose 9" or 36" long! Each candle is hand poured with vegan, non GMO pet friendly 100% soy wax. I use pure essential oils. Your bowl is reusable! Use it for storage, or decoration after you have completed burning your candle. ****PLEASE note that each item is HAND MADE and as such, is subject to variations in the following: line spacing, letter spacing, letter size, density of ink, unevenness, decor variations (in number, size and item), etc! If there is a specific factor (or several) that are important to you, please message me prior to ordering (or add your specifications in the note to seller upon ordering) so that I can try to provide you with the best experience possible. Dough Bowl - 100% soy candle All dough bowls are made to order. Please choose your scent and allow 7-10 business days for your candle to made + shipped to you. ___________________________ Candle Product info: 14-16 oz. soy wax triple eco-friendly wood wick __________________________ PLEASE NOTE: Each dough bowl is hand carved making your bowl unique and one of a kind. We recommend lighting your candle on a surface that can be easily cleaned in the event wax seeps out from the dough bowl. Although this is unlikely, like us, these hand carved dough bowls can have small imperfections. Prior to each pour, we examine each dough bowl to ensure there are no visible cracks but due to the nature of the natural bowls, they can sometimes be missed. In the event this does happen, the wax can easily be cleaned up with warm soap + water! Please allow your candle to burn approximately 2-3 hours or until wax reaches the sides of the bowl. This will prolong your candle life and reduce tunneling. Burn no more than 4 hours at a time. Do not move your bowl while candle is burning. Always keep candle within eyes reach when burning. >> In addition, wax discoloration, rough + bumpy tops and/or frosting may occur after burning your candle. This will not affect the performance of your candle. __________________________ Please note: Products are made to order and ship within 7-10 business days via USPS Priority Mail.
Today I wanted to share the story of my dough bowl with you. You may have noticed it sitting on our living room shelves a couple posts ago... it was a very special gift from my father-in-law who recently made it by hand for me. I've known for a while that he was making this for me and periodically he would share his progress, but when he gave the finished bowl to me on New Year's Day, I was simply in awe. My father-in-law is very gifted when it comes to wood-working... it's his hobby and as long as I've known him, he's always whittling on a piece of wood in his down-time, but I was still blown away. A more perfect dough bowl there could not be in my eyes. It was made from a pecan tree that had been cut down about 50 years ago and is large at 2 1/2 feet long. When I held it for the first time, I couldn't believe how perfectly the handles fit in my hands. Instead of being a simple straight cut, you can see here how rounded they are and were carved in a downward fashion to make handling comfortable. I love every little detail, from the worm holes in the side of the bowl to the natural cracks in the wood. The back of the bowl is every bit as beautiful as the front and so smooth that it's hard to comprehend what it looked like originally. I was thrilled when my father-in-law told me he had taken some pictures of the bowl in process and when he sent them to me this week, I knew I had to share them. You can see here the piece of pecan wood he started with. The hollowing was created with a spade drill bit and a grinder. As the bowl took shape, he used a wood roughing-out tool (Scorp) to smooth the inside before sanding. Afterwards he sealed the bowl with food safe Watco butcher block oil. I love how the oil slightly deepens the color of the wood and gives it a finished look and feel. I'm not sure where the permanent home will be for our dough bowl, but for now it's displayed with some wintery pine cones. I don't feel like I could ever say thank you enough to my father-in-law for such a special gift - it's a treasure in my eyes. I thought I'd share this last picture with you as it makes me laugh... I frequently use our kitchen table for taking photos because the natural light is wonderful, particularly when it's dark and rainy out like today. When I take pictures I'm often shooting around table clutter and little hands that love to help me "style"... see the pine cone tower? (smile) I hope you've had a great Monday!

Each candle has 2.75 lb of Soy Wax! Soy wax tends to burn cleaner and for a longer time than traditional paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is petroleum based whereas soy wax is a natural more eco-friendly choice. By buying a soy wax candle you are supporting the American farmer and his soy bean crop. *Our Wax Flowers, stands and Refill Kits ARE NOT included with the purchase of a dough bowl candle - they can be purchased separately! Each wooden dough bowl is hand-carved and measures approx. 30L x 6W x 2H (Each is hand carved, so dimensions will vary). Each candle does hold the same amount of wax. Soy wax is also bio degradable, and cleans up with soap and water. That makes reusing your containers much easier. Please understand these are wooden bowls made to look rustic from raw wood. Some may have knot holes, scratches, knife marks, saw blade marks, sap or minor cracks. These are not defects. These are a natural part of a bowl that has been made from raw wood. Size, color and shape will vary. We do try to minimize these for each bowl however, cannot guarantee your bowl will not have any of these character marks.
A few months ago I wrote this post on how to get the "Fixer Upper" look for less, since it has been one of our more popular posts I thought I'd pull together some other online sources
It's an extra special Head Over Heels post! Why? Well, I was super excited to share it and I feel bad that I didn't get posts written for our Guest Room and Master Bedroom project as promised. But I am sure you will forgive me after you see all the pretty images in this post :) Get ready, it is time for Bachman's 2012 Spring Idea House! This Spring's house is a "Relaxing Renewal" celebrating spring energy and renewal. As expected, the house was incredibly inspiring so it had to be in this week's Head Over Heels spotlight. I think by now you know the drill with the Idea House but just in case: Bachman's is a Floral and Gift Garden here in Minneapolis, and their Idea House was their original founder's house built in the 1920's. The company now uses the house for their seasonal Idea House creating entirely new rooms for each of the four seasons. Everything about each room is different for each season's idea house, right down to the paint on the walls. When you enter the house you get a brochure that lists all the details for each room including the paint color and 'ideas'. The cool part? Everything in each room is for sale! We'll start in the Dining Room, I will list all the Ideas at the end of each room. I tried to keep this post a little more simplified than the ones in the past, hope you still enjoy it! Bachman's did have them listed in the brochure, but I thought they were so clever! I loved the antique clock in the laundry chute and the lantern near the backdoor entrance along with rustic hooks. Too many great decorating ideas right?!? Which ones were you Head Over Heels for? I thought they came up with a lot of fun window valance ideas, but my favorites were the collage of vintage mirrors in the lower level bath and the chandeliers made from the lampshades with hanging glass bottles. What did you love?!?! What are you inspired to add in your own home? The Idea House will be open until April 15th, if you are local make sure you stop by! It's hard to miss the big pink house :) If you want more inspiration, here are the links to past Idea Houses: Holiday 2011, Fall 2011, Summer 2011, Spring 2011, and Holiday 2010. ************************ PLEASE NOTE: In case you didn't read the top of the post, I just want to reiterate that this IS NOT OUR HOUSE and I am not employed or affiliated with Bachman's in any way (which means I did not decorate the rooms shown). I am a HUGE fan of the Ideas House and love sharing it as long as they allow people take photographs when they visit. It seems some people have been confused about that and I would NEVER want to take credit for something I did not work on. There, I feel better now :) Hope you found some inspiration, thanks for stopping by! Linking this post up over at Southern Hospitality!

- HANDCRAFTED IN CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA, USA. - ALL-NATURAL SOY WAX. - 100% COTTON WICK. - ECO-FRIENDLY & SUSTAINABLE WAX ONLY. - PHTHALATE-FREE, PARAFFIN-FREE. ***These dimensions are very rough. All of our wood bowls are hand carved and sizing does vary a fair amount. Please understand these are wooden bowls made to look rustic from raw wood. Some may have knot holes, scratches, knife marks, saw blade marks, sap or minor cracks and blemishes. These are not defects. These are a natural part of the bowl that have been made from raw wood. THEY ARE WOOD AND CAN CATCH FIRE IF PROPER PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT FOLLOWED! Do not burn the candle to the bottom where the wood is exposed to the flame. Remember to trim the wick to 1/4” and don’t burn more than a few hours before trimming and relighting. This will increase your burn time and help prevent smoke and overheating that can cause the candle to crack or combust. Place candles on a hard, flat surface or tray that will not be damaged by heat, flame, smoke and/or if the bowl breaks and the wax leaks or spills. Do not burn candles near furniture, drapes, carpet, paper or anything that could catch fire or be damaged if the candle cracks or breaks due to heat, smokes or catches fire. Do not burn candles in a draft. It is unsafe and can also cause the candles to burn unevenly. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Due to the design of our candle, we recommend placing the candle on top of a dish or plate to prevent wax from coming in contact with your surfaces. Because all candles are 100% handmade, each candle will have minor imperfections by nature and color may slightly vary. For irregular shaped candles, we cannot guarantee that each one will be fully burned.

I blame the cottage. Oh, I had seen these rustic dough bowls used before but always in an über crafty/country/dried flowers with roosters and other things that are pretty but weren’t quite my style. But, once I saw one at the cottage, I decided that I could incorporate one or 20 into our home. I scoured the internets and shops for a large bowl but everything was over $100 and I am patient when it comes to searching for something that costs three digits. Back in the fall I was shopping with my friends Caroline and Michelle at a Pottery Barn Outlet and I stumbled upon not one, but two dough bowls. Pottery Barn carries some Found Objects that are the real thing, not factory made, like these bowls. Each had a tag saying they were from Hungary and a date in the 1800’s, and since I am organized, I’ve already lost both tags. They were on sale for $49 so I bought them both having no idea where I would put them. I just knew they were a steal and that they were something I’ve wanted for awhile. Here they are together next to a soup spoon. You can […]

I bought this dough bowl from an estate in Connecticut. Someone a long time ago kept it together by mending the wood splits with wire. It has a 20" diameter and stands 5" high. The catalog described it as "18th Century Colonial Maple Turned Dough Bowl." I placed it on a standing dough box in the front room of my log house. Most of the items in the sale were expensive porcelain, china, and fine art. This was the only primitive. Mine was the only bid. I made sure this was not one of the fakes that are being sold on the popular auction sites. Those also have "repairs" made of tin and wire. Nobody would nail a piece of sharp tin to the inside of a dough bowl back then...your fingers would be cut every time you made biscuits.
Today I am going to show you how I made a knock off dough bowl but first let's talk about the history of this rustic, wooden bowl.
