One of the outstanding properties of encaustic is it’s translucency, which makes it a great medium for collage. Collage can be used with encaustic to provide the main focus of a painting, or …
Ania Gilmore, Lexington, MA & Warsaw, Poland Library of Alexandria Altered book, burned pages, wax, shellac. One of a kind. 5 x 7.5” Wax and the Artist Book II, curated by Catherine Nash A continuing study has evolved out of this personal curiosity... I wondered, "How are contemporary book artists combining beeswax/encaustics within/onto their artist books?" This second year of curating has pulled together completely new examples: the artist books of 17 featured artists from the U.S. and Europe exhibit a rich integration of encaustic both technically and conceptually. Hanne Mattheison, Malling, Denmark Book of Destiny I Cover in white waxed linen cloth 5 x 3.5 in. First presented in 2009, at the Third Annual, I presented this completely new compilation of bookworks in lecture format at the Fourth Annual Encaustic Painting Conference held June 11-13th, 2010 in Beverly, MA. In this Encaustic map painting I've combined two maps of Raleigh. The first is a map from July 1797- "Plan of the City of Raleigh with all the improvements & all the Numbers july 1th, 1797". This is a plan for Raleigh's downtown. I printed it and used gel medium to adhere it to the wood board. Once I added a few layers of wax, I used a clay tool to make lines in the wax over the block squares, then filled them with burnt sienna oil paint.
Lara Plecas has been a visual artist exhibiting work in the Valley since 2000. She was a part of the budding art community in downtown Phoenix that resides along Roosevelt and Grand Avenue. She was a member of the Eyelounge Artists collective from 2010-2013, during this time they had group exhibitions in Israel and at the Mesa Arts Center; and the Mesa Arts Center has since acquired her work for their permanent collection. She currently has two large scale pieces on display at the Phoenix Airport Museum at Sky Harbor Airport. Lara’s work utilizes elements of folk art and textile patterns reimagined through old papers and book pages. Her works are narrative and tell stories of nostalgia and family history, much like a quilter. In this series, entitled “Heritage” I take a deeper look into the memories, stories and items that have been passed down through the generations. Exploring the Homestead of my husband’s family and the rooting of his family here in the west. Pondering the items left behind by our families and imagining them being used in their day. Continuing the connection with our lineage and understanding the struggles our family endured, is a common theme that I am continuing to explore. The materials that I use such as old papers, maps, wallpaper and books recall an era of nostalgia. The sanding through layers of paper reveal a time worn sensibility that I am trying to recall. I draw my inspiration from folk arts such as quilting, where the women recycled old used clothing to create beautiful patterns that tell stories of their struggles; all the while creating an essential element of warmth and survival. This exhibition was curated by Nicole Royce of Royce Contemporary. Please join us for the artist reception on Friday, October 20th, 2017 from 6-10pm. Walter Art Gallery 6425 E. THE BEAUTY OF NOTHINGNESS, book by Donna Watson "Creativity has more to do with the elimination of the inessential than with inventing something new." ---- Helmut John THE BEAUTY OF NOTHINGNESS, Donna Watson, page 9 I found some blank journals that were perfect for creating a book. They are square in format which I like. The paper seemed sturdy enough for collage and the best of all, the pages lie flat when opened. And the journal is not too thick....just 45 pages which was perfect for what I wanted to do. THE BEAUTY OF NOTHINGNESS, Donna Watson, page 14 I had been reading books on Zen all summer and I wanted to use words and phrases that helped to explain a Zen tenet... the importance of NOTHINGNESS. Emptiness or nothingness in Zen philosophy can be mistaken for sheer nothingness, but is in fact the reservoir of infinite possibilities. THE BEAUTY OF NOTHINGNESS, Donna Watson, page 20 In meditation, one can 'empty' their mind of all the daily clutter, the constant inner dialogue that can be distracting, negative or creating barriers. THE BEAUTY OF NOTHINGNESS, Donna Watson, page 21 The Still Point is at the heart of creativity. In Zen, you access this still point through meditation. To be quiet, to simply be in the moment, and in stillness.... is the basis of our existence. It is not a void... but a means to empty yourself from the incessant flow of thoughts and create a state of consciousness that is open and receptive. THE BEAUTY OF NOTHINGNESS, Donna Watson, page 27 As one counts the breath: inhale, one; exhale, two... the mind empties of all the incessant inner dialogue of judging, complaining, analyzing, wishing and so on. We can spend our time preoccupied with the past, or with the future which has not happened yet. As a result we miss the moment to moment awareness of our life. THE BEAUTY OF NOTHINGNESS, Donna Watson, page 29 After 2 trips to Kyoto, Japan and their flea markets, I had accumulated a large supply of old envelopes, old letters, post cards, receipts and books. I used these envelopes and letters as well as my hand painted rice papers to create 43 collages (43 pages in the book). I have posted some of the pages here as examples from the book. You can view the whole book at this Blurb.com link here. You can also purchase the book. There are 3 options: soft bound and 2 hardbound versions. THE BEAUTY OF NOTHINGNESS, Donna Watson, page 37 "There are two journeys in every odyssey, one on worried water, the other crouched and motionless, without noise." --- Derek Walcott

View On White It's bewildering that you can feel connected to someone that you have never laid eyes on, never heard the tone of their voice, have no idea what color their hair is even, but yet... you still feel it. It brings truth to the saying, "True beauty cannot be seen with the eyes, but only the heart." She has asked me more than once if I have seen Up! And I always have the same answer, "Not yet" :) This is for her, Thank you for the generous testimonial Jamie. It would not surprise me if she is a writer on top of an incredible artist. She is generous- a huge inspiration for me and just so so sweet! She is here. Oh! Shameless plug this texture is called Ocean Memories from a new pack I am working on- I am loving it so you might see it a few times. :)
About Artist Comments "The title of this piece is a play on the title of Iron Butterfly’s song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," says artist Linda Benenati. "Vida in the painting is surrounded by bright pansies and colorful birds. I often return to images of slightly vintage-looking women with animals and flowers." About the Artist Artist Linda Benenati creates playful, vintage styled encaustic portraits. Linda grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and studied English and Fine Art in college. After graduating, she continued to paint in oil and acrylic while pursuing a career as a graphic artist and writer in the tech industry. In 2010, an encounter with encaustic painting completely changed her art practice and she says it became her all time favorite medium. Today, Linda uses the molten wax exclusively to develop her humorous and personal scenes. "I am a collector of things, words, phrases and ideas," she explains. "I keep a notebook by the side of my bed and often ideas come to me in the middle of the night or even in dreams. Once I have an idea to illustrate or story I want to tell, I will collect images from multiple sources including magazines, the internet and taking photos." When she's not working in her home studio, Linda enjoys live theater and watching vintage film noir, where she finds inspiration in the costumes and set designs.
