La crise économique et financière a exacerbé la pauvreté et l’exclusion sociale dans toute l’Union européenne. Les derniers chiffres montrent que 120 millions de personnes sont menacées de pauvreté ou d’exclusion sociale. Mercredi, les députés ont voté en plénière le budget du Fonds européen d’aide aux plus démunis : 3,5 milliards d’euros y seront alloué pour la période 2014-2020.

Le tabagisme est la principale cause de décès évitable dans l’Union européenne : 26 % des citoyens européens fument et la plupart d’entre eux commencent avant l’âge de 25 ans. De nouvelles règles sur le tabac adoptées en 2014 prendront effet ce vendredi 20 mai. La directive vise à rendre les produits du tabac moins attrayants et à empêcher le recrutement de nouveaux fumeurs parmi les jeunes.
De nouvelles règles européennes fixent des plafonds aux frais que les banques facturent aux commerçants lorsqu’un client paie ses achats par une carte de débit ou de crédit. Comme les commerçants répercutent ces frais sur le client, les nouveaux plafonds devraient se traduire par une baisse des prix et profiteront donc à la fois aux détaillants et aux consommateurs. La législation sera votée en session plénière ce mardi 10 mars.
