Everett Shinn (1876 - 1953) was an American realist painter and member of the Ashcan School, also known as 'the Eight.' He was the youngest member of the group of modernist painters who explored the depiction of real life. He is most famous for his numerous paintings of New York and the theatre, and of various aspects of luxury and modern life inspired by his home in New York City. For biographical notes on Shinn see part 1. For earlier works by Shinn see parts 1 - 2 also. A recent tour of a studio tour of Joaquín Sorolla's artist's house. Monet called this Spanish impressionist painter, 'the master of light'.
Leighton is one of my favorite painters for two reasons. The first and most important reason are the dresses. He puts a lot of painstaking detail into the dresses of all his characters. Just look at the beautiful dress of this maiden! The second reason is the subject matter. His medieval paintings are always interesting they are not your typical medieval time paintings. They focus more on the mundane aspects of the time.

It is considered one of the worlds best paintings and appears on many lists of most popular art. It is sometimes also called Sunday in the Park (with George), as it was the inspiration for the musical of the same name by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. It is one of Matejko's most famous works and the one that launched him to fame. Its primary component is the contrast between the solemn jester (the titular Stańczyk) and the lively ball going on in the background. The painting has created an image of Stańczyk that has become iconic and widely recognized in Poland. Skye Nott: Was studying this fresco by Raphael and the parallels to a good street shot are astounding. The balance of immediate and compelling movement, the solidity of triangular composition, the eye lines and eye paths, forms and colours highlighting relative importance, dramas within dramas, it's all there. The corollary of course is that when a street photo is really right, it's approaching the masters of the Renaissance, which is a nice plaudit. This art history thing is really opening my eyes - probably obvious to anyone with formal training but I'm sure a lot of us haven't or went to school for non-artistic pursuits. Read some books, take a course, or if you're unemployed/broke....
