About The Artwork As part of a new still life project, and teamed up with the great food stylist Mary Harris, we were up very early for the special weekly farmers produce market in the old Redfern railway sidings and looking for potential fruit, vegetable and floral subjects. I wanted a cauliflower with its original leaves intact as they have lovely shapes and veining to help with the overall feeling of this simple still life. The light was focussed on the white flesh of the vegetable with the wooden background adding some texture to the base and accented by the knife. I love a bit of still life. This is what I came up with one day when playing with some paint and fruit. My fruit pics have been good to me recently. Entered them into a few competitions last year and they managed to get an honourable mention in the International Photographers Award 2008 for Fine Art - Still Life and was a nominee in the 3rd Annual Photography Master Cup (which I found out randomly last week when I was checking out who the winners were. An important part of growing as a photographer is shooting personal projects. If you are a food photographer, it can be extremely easy to get stuck in a rut because you are shooting the same modern images over and over. An easy and important way to combat this is to shoot food as fine art. At its very essence, food photography is still photography. I think it is important to
Aaron Alamo uses the typical visual elements of the Baroque Vanitas, adding some contemporary objects, but his message transcends a mere aesthetic, as he plays with our idea of photography and art as eternal elements. His work is a photograph of a photograph taken 10 years ago and treated with humidity and fungus for its prompt decomposition. Aaron's work makes us question the temporality in art and the concept of eternal. Aaron Alamo: “‘Vanitas: Not-so-still Life’, is a project that shows the destruction of a photograph through time. Inspired by traditional vanitas paintings, with elements that are carefully chosen to give them a modern twist: a skull with orthodontist braces, a bucket of KFC, a plastic cup, etc., The original photographs were created in 2008. They were printed on cotton paper and ‘treated’ with humidity and a culture of fungus in a dark place. The process of decay was photographed every year for the next 10 years creating a series of images of decay and transformation. This series demonstrates how nothing is eternal -not even a photograph.” Available sizes: M Unframed 40cm x 60cm L Unframed 60cm x 100cm Limited edition of 10 prints per size. About The Artwork The kitchen lives on contrasts today as never before. Sometimes based on tastes in a dish (bitter, sour, sweet, salty or umami) often contrasting to saturate our taste buds and make sensations explode. Other times based on different temperatures (think of certain dishes in which there is a cold part that contrasts a hot one). Or when we eat a risotto and there are crunchy parts that you might not expect. But what's missing? A very strong chromatic contrast is lacking. This series is based on complementary colors such as blue and orange or red and green. A very strong contrast that the brain likes. A contrast that is hardly seen in the kitchen. In this series I wanted to bring out strong contrasts that are not just sweet / salty or hot / cold but related to color. This photo was designed and created with the help of Mayda Mason, co-author with Cosimo and has been awarded in many international photographic competitions. Your work will be produced by an Italian reference laboratory in Fine Art / Giclée, verified and certified. Everything will be packed in a tube sent by express courier. Hahnemuhle cotton paper, synonymous with absolute quality, it will be specially chosen by Cosimo. I know the word 'Great' is subjective, the definition is different for everyone. What might be great to me is absolute rubbish to you and visa versa. That's fine because we are all on a different photographic journey, each with a different path. I'm not going to pretend to know anything about your path or what will lead to your own personal success because we both probably measure greatness a bit differently. However, I want to share with you 6 steps that I took from the very beginning of my journey to advance my food photography and if you're just starting
