Spring time is finally here and there is no better indicator than the blossoms around Temple Square and the LDS Salt Lake Temple. I'll call them cherry blossoms

By Alexis Tanner A couple years ago, back when cell phone batteries didn’t last longer than a day, my husband Alan and I were invited to his best friend’s wedding at the Draper temple. We stayed at my parent’s house so we could drop off our daughter, but we forgot our cell phone chargers so our phones had died the morning of the wedding, leaving us without a map to the temple. But we thought, we can see the temple, we can find it. However, that morning it was super cloudy and the temple was completely covered and we couldn’t see it. We tried our best to figure out the streets up to the Draper temple and even asked someone for directions, but we couldn’t find it and we missed the wedding. It was really disappointing. I share this story with you not so you remember your cell phone chargers when you travel, although that is important. But it also taught me that we can’t just hope to get to the temple, we have to prepare and we need to help our youth prepare. Recommend The first thing our youth need to get to the temple is a temple recommend. It’s important that we explain that a temple recommend is more than a piece of paper and it’s more than checking off a to-do list to be worthy to enter the temple. Having a temple recommend and being worthy to enter the temple blesses our lives every day. President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “It would please the Lord if every adult member [and I would add youth] would be worthy of—and carry—a current temple recommend. The things that we must do and not do to be worthy of a temple recommend are the very things that ensure we will be happy as individuals and as families.” Sometimes the youth may feel uneasy or worried that they aren’t worthy to enter the Lord’s house. I love what Elder Djarot Subiantoro said in his talk called “Always Having a Temple Recommend”, ”If we are striving to be true and faithful to the principles of the gospel, then we will always be temple worthy.” When we are trying our best and trying to live the commandments, then we can be sure that we are ready to enter the Lord’s house. I think it’s important to remember that God doesn’t ask for perfection, He just asks for you to try your best and want to follow Him. In the October 2020 General Conference, Elder Ronald A. Rasband shared a story about his father-in-law who was nearing the end of his life. He had asked the bishop to interview him to renew his temple recommend because he wanted to die being “recommended to the Lord.” I love this way of thinking about a temple recommend as a recommendation to the Lord. Having a current temple recommend is so important. Family history work One of my favorite things about going to the temple is the opportunity to do the work for our ancestors. My family has a lot of family history work to do. My mom is a convert and the only member in her family. And my dad’s side is pretty new to the church. So your family might be like mine and have more work than you’ll ever have time for. If you have the opportunity, help your youth take your family names to the temple. I have had some wonderful experiences at the temple when I have the name of my ancestors in my hands. But finding your ancestors can be really hard. Or you may be like my husband whose family work has pretty much all been done to the point of getting professional help. Or you may not know how to find your ancestors. There are still other ways the youth can connect families besides taking names to the temple. They can do indexing on familysearch.org, write their own personal history for their posterity, interview living relatives and get to know their stories, or learn about their ancestors as they explore their own family tree. Knowing our past helps our entire family. Studies have shown that people who know about their ancestors have higher self esteem and are better able to deal with the effects of stress. As we get to know our ancestors, we feel more connected to them and connected to the world around us. As I’ve done family history work, I have felt guided by some of my ancestors to find their records and records of their family. One of my favorite experiences was when I was looking at the records of my great grandmother’s sister Margaret. She had passed away as a young mother. She had a twin sister Catherine who married Margaret’s husband after she died, raised Margaret’s older children, and then went on to have children of her own. One afternoon, as I was doing family history work, I was looking at Margaret’s grave online. It was in Chicago which was near where I lived at the time. On the grave was listed a Baby Margaret, among a couple of other names, so I couldn’t tell who baby Margaret belonged to. After a lot of searching, I found the death certificate of a baby Margaret who died on the day she was born, the same day as her mother Margaret. When you find records of babies, there isn’t any temple work that needs to be done, but I was able to add her name to our family tree. Later that night as I was saying my prayers and thanking Heavenly Father for helping me find baby Margaret, I had a really special experience where I could feel the joy and happiness coming from Margaret and her daughter Baby Margaret. I didn’t even do any temple work for this situation, but getting to know a bit of their story and participating in finding their records was a special experience I will always treasure. Connecting with our ancestors outside of the temple also allows us to connect with them inside the temple and to better understand that families are eternal. Keep the Temple on Your Mind My third tip for preparing the youth for the temple is to help keep the temple on their minds. Something I like to do with my kids is to point to the temple whenever we see them. And in Utah that’s a lot. My kids can’t always remember the names of the temples so sometimes they’ll give them nicknames like the Provo temple was the “cupcake temple.” The Bountiful temple is called “the temple where mom and dad got married.” And to my younger kids, most of the other temples are the Salt Lake Temple. When we intentionally look for the temples around the valley and when we’re driving around, it keeps it on our mind. In our own home, we try to have pictures of the temple in each room. President Spencer W. Kimball said, “It seems to me it would be a fine thing if every set of parents would have in every bedroom in their house a picture of the temple so the [child] from the time he is an infant could look at the picture every day and it becomes a part of his life. When he reaches the age that he needs to make this very important decision, it will already have been made.” With the current COVID restrictions, getting an appointment to the temple can be hard. But when we look for the temple, have a temple picture in our room, and even spend time just on the grounds, we can begin to feel how sacred that place is and hopefully have a desire to be there as often as we can. In the last General Conference, President Nelson said, “If you don't yet love to attend the temple, go more often — not less.” As the world becomes a harder place to be in, the temple can be a place of strength and eternal perspective. Don’t let your youth get stuck unprepared like Alan and I were when we couldn’t see the temple and missed experiencing his friend’s wedding. Prepare your teenagers in whatever ways you can to make the temple a special place for them because it is a special place where we can better connect with our Heavenly Father, our Heavenly Mother, and our families. Gratitude. This one state of being has completely transformed my life. No hardship, failure, or difficulty is too great for gratitude. Happiness and light are what await you as you express gratitude in all things. Honestly, my favorite part of the day is when I kneel down at night and express thanks for the countless blessings throughout that particular day. It is almost a guarantee that I will be overcome by tears because of the greatness of the love of God I see in my life. I cannot tell y'all how often people ask me why I am so happy; my permanent smile is commented on daily. But it's simple, my secret to happiness is gratitude, If you have not knelt down recently with a prayer completely focused on gratitude, I invite you to do so, because the impact goes far greater than what you feel, but who you are. "And he who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious; and the things of this earth shall be added unto him, even an hundred fold, yea, more." (D&C 78:19)

I have made a lot of different handouts for young women and now missionary work (find here). Lately, I have received a lot of requests for primary printables. Of course I was thrilled to create some! When I was serving in the primary, I found a love for the primary songs and decided to use them as my inspiration for these printables. Hope that you are able to use them!
Symbols are incorporated into the exterior of each temple. Understanding them can help enhance our spiritual experience. Here are some of the most common.
Ideas for October Week 4 LDS Primary Sharing Time, 2017 Sharing Time Outline Theme: Choose the Right October 2017 Sharing Time Topic: Blessings of the Priesthood Are Available to All October 2017 Scripture: “And also all they who receive this priesthood receive me, saith the Lord” (D&C 84:35). October 2017 Song: Your Choice October Week 4 Topic: I can go to the temple to receive ordinances for my ancestors when I am older. Preparation: Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine. The most important thing is to love those you teach and to teach them by the Spirit!! Focus on building their testimonies and helping them come unto Christ! (All printables for this sharing time can be found and printed by clicking the "Free Printable Download" button. They are free and can be printed and used for personal and church purposes) Sharing Time Instruction: Show the primary children the week's theme poster and invite them to repeat, " I can go to the temple to receive ordinances for my ancestors when I am older" Explain to the primary children that Heavenly Father loves us so much, he wants all of His children to return to him!! There are some ordinances that we need to receive to return to our Heavenly Father, these are called Saving Ordinances. Some people leave this world before they receive these ordinances. Heavenly Father has provided us with a way to help those people. Show the primary children a picture of the temple. Explain that in the temple we are able to perform these ordinance for the dead, so they will have the opportunity to accept and receive them. Ask the primary children what the ordinances are? (Baptism, Endowment, Sealing) Explain that they can prepare now to go to the temple to receive ordinances for their ancestors. When they are 12 years old they can have an interview with the bishop and receive a recommend to go and do baptisms for the dead. Explain to the children that they are going to do a little activity to teach them about some things they can do now to prepare for the temple and to help their deceased ancestors receive their ordinances. Before primary place a number under 4 chairs. Ask the primary children to look under their chairs to see if they have a number. In 4 sacks, labeled with 4 numbers place the following items: 1- Personal History - Journal, 2- Paper of a picture of an ancestor with a story for (Learn stories of your family members and write them down), 3- Family Tree (Search for your ancestors and fill our your family tree, find those who need their work done), and 4- My gospel standards card (Choose the Right each day). Invite the primary child with number one to come up and pull the item out of bag number 1, discuss with the primary how keeping their own personal history in a journal can help them prepare to attend the temple someday to receive ordinances for their ancestors. See below examples. Invite another primary child with the number 2 to come up and pull the item out of bag number 2, discuss with the primary how learning and recording stories of their ancestors can help prepare them to attend the temple someday to receive ordinance for their ancestors. Invite the primary child with number 3 to come up and pull the item out of bag number 3, discuss with the primary how filling out their family tree and finding those who need their work done can help them prepare to attend the temple someday to receive ordinance for their ancestors. Invite the primary child with number 4 to come up and pull the item out of bag number 4, discuss with the primary how choosing the right each day and following the My Gospel Standards can help them prepare to attend the temple someday to receive ordinance for their ancestors. Close by sharing your testimony on the topic and encouraging the children to prepare now so they can attend the temple someday and receive ordinance for their ancestors. Things to Discuss: Personal History - Journal: Keeping a personal history can help us remember the things we experience as well as our blessings. It is our record to pass down to generations, it will allow our children and grandchildren to draw closer to us, as they read these experiences. It can help us remember times when we have felt the spirit or received promptings. These things can help prepare us to go to the temple someday. Learn stories of your family members and write them down: As we learn stories of our family members our hearts will be turned towards them. Our love for them will grow deeper and we will fill a connection to them. "As you learn stories about your grandparents and other progenitors (ancestors, forefathers), you see into their hearts and you develop an appreciation for them as real people—as members of your family." (Gordon B. Hinckley) Search for your ancestors and fill out your family tree, find those who need their work done: As we find those who need their work done, we will feel closer to them. Although you can not do baptisms for the dead until you are 12, you can still look for names and help so someone can do their work for them. Choose the right each day (My Gospel Standards): "You can live the commandments and be worthy to go to the temple when you are twelve so that you can be baptized for the dead. You can choose the right each day so that when you are older, you can go to the temple to receive your own endowment. You can continue to live a righteous life and be worthy to return to the temple and do work to help your entire family, including your progenitors, receive the “crowning blessings the Church has to offer.” (Gordon B Hinckley) *************************** Thank you so much for stopping by! At dusk, Alesha announced that we were going on a little hike on the back side of the Draper Temple. Alesha grabbed a water jug before we left, and filled it with ice and rock salt. Then she put two different zip-loc bags of juice in the ice. We then took turns carrying, swinging and twisting it from side to side as we hiked. Once we got to the top we each had a nice little slush to enjoy as we gazed down at the temple below. And oh the beauty of the temple below! This was our actual view. The photo is from a fixed lens and isn’t zoomed in. It was simply gorgeous at dusk with the lights just coming on. It was such a perfect hike! Thanks for the hike on the hill, Hill’s!

There are two temples approximately 15 miles from my house in either direction. Two more will be built even closer than that in the near future. I have been privileged to have quick access to the temple my entire life. But these last few months have given me a taste of what it’s like for many around the world who can’t easily drive a few minutes to the temple. I’ve also reflected on my pioneer ancestors, many of whom had received the blessings of the temple, but were forced to leave their sacred sanctuary. I’m grateful now to see some temples returning to one phase or another. So whether you are waiting for your local temple to re-open, or waiting for one to be built nearby, we can all access the blessings of the temple without access to the temple. Seek personal revelation. One of the greatest blessings of the temple is that it’s a place of revelation. But it’s not the only place we can receive revelation. Harold Glen Clark said, “The standard works and...modern-day prophets are revelations. In the temple, as in our private prayers, we may also receive revelation directly from God.” We must keep that direct line of communication with God open at all times, especially when we don’t have access to the temple. The heavens are open and He is always there ready to pour out more knowledge and blessings to His children. Indexing. FamilySearch.org defines indexing as a “volunteer transcription effort that makes valuable genealogical records freely searchable online.” When you index you help connect families by typing up historical documents so they can be published. Once these records are published and searchable, it becomes much easier to find names to take to the temple. You don’t need access to the temple to help connect families on both sides of the veil. Read and record your ancestor’s stories. When I was 11 years old, my grandfather died at age 88. The only memories I have of him is of him quietly sitting in a chair while we would visit and play in his yard. Recently, I was chatting with my cousin who is 25 years older than me. She shared so many stories about my grandpa I had never heard. My love grew for him so much that day, especially because the stories reminded me of my dad. You can access the blessings of the temple by reading and sharing the stories of your ancestors. If you can’t find any, discover more about your ancestors by talking to other relatives. And be sure to record them! Tell your story. When we think of doing family history, it’s not uncommon to think about researching your ancestors and recording the past. But it’s much more than that. Allan Packer said that “Family history also includes the present as we create history by living our lives. We shape the future just as our ancestors have shaped our lives. We shape the future for our descendants by the lives we live and stories and pictures we share.” Tell a short family story of your own, invite your parents, siblings, and other family members to share their family stories, and record them digitally. Create a Christ-centered home. A few weeks ago, I published an article detailing different ways we can all create a more Christ-centered home. From creating a spiritual environment to providing uplifting physical surroundings, we can all do our part to make our homes a holy place. Without access to the temple, we can each take extra measures to increase our spiritual capacity and create Christ-centered homes. Let us make them places where we would be comfortable to have the Savior come. Becky Squire is a writer and speaker. We can reject everything else: religion, ideology, all received wisdom. But we cannot escape the necessity of love and compassion. This, then, is my true religion, my simple faith. In this sense, there is no need for temple or church, for mosque or synagogue, no need for complicated philosophy, doctrine, or dogma. Our own heart, our own mind, is the temple. The doctrine is compassion. Love for others and respect for their rights and dignity, no matter who or what they are: ultimately these are all we need.
