Hermann Max Pechstein (December 31, 1881 – June 29, 1955) was a German expressionist painter and printmaker, and a member of the Die Brücke group. Pechstein was born in Zwickau, the son of a craftsman who worked in a textile mill..Early contact with the art of Vincent van Gogh stimulated Pechstein's development toward expressionism. After studying art first at the School of Applied Arts and then at the Royal Art Academy in Dresden, Pechstein met Erich Heckel and joined the art group Die Brücke in 1906. He was the only member to have formal art training. Later in Berlin, he helped to found the Neue Sezession and gained recognition for his decorative and colorful paintings that were lent from the ideas of Van Gogh, Matisse, and the Fauves. His paintings eventually became more primitivist, incorporating thick black lines and angular figures. From in 1933, Pechstein was vilified by the Nazis because of his art. A total of 326 of his paintings were removed from German museums. Sixteen of his works were displayed in the Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) exhibition of 1937. During this time, Pechstein went into seclusion in rural Pomerania. He was a prolific printmaker, producing 421 lithographs, 315 woodcuts and linocuts, and 165 intaglio prints, mostly etchings. Pechstein was a professor at the Berlin Academy for ten years before his dismissal by the Nazis in 1933. He was reinstated in 1945, and subsequently won numerous titles and awards for his work. He died in West Berlin. He is buried on the Evangelischer Friedhof Alt-Schmargendorf in Berlin.Wikipedia

Born in 1887, he attended the Royal Academy of Art in Düsseldorf before leaving to pursue more experimental styles. In 1910, Macke's paintings began to show signs of innovation as he became involved in the Expressionist movement. Macke's work captured emotion and spirituality rather than realistic detail. Macke was killed at the age of 27 during the early months of World War I.

Otto Mueller was born in Liebau in German Silesia. Between 1890-1892 he was trained in lithography. From 1894 to 1896 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and continued his study in Munich 1898. He left Munich's academy after Franz von Stuck classified him as untalented. His early works are influenced by impressionism, Jugendstil and symbolism. From 1908, he turned more and more to expressionism. During this time there were meetings with Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Rainer Maria Rilke and Erich Heckel. In 1910, he joined 'Die Brücke', a Dresden-based group of Expressionist artists. He was member of the group until it disbanded in 1913 . At the same time Mueller also had contact with the artists group of the 'Blaue Reiter'. During the World War I he fought as a German soldier in France and Russia. After the war he became professor at the academy of arts in Breslau where he taught until his death. Altogether his printmaking amounted to 172 prints, in woodcut, etching and lithography. In 1937 the Nazis seized 357 of his works from German museums, since the pictures were considered as degenerate art. Mueller was one of the most lyrical of German expressionist painters. The central topic in Mueller's works is the unity of humans and nature, whereas his paintings are focused on a harmonious simplification of form, color and contours. He is especially known for his characteristic paintings of nudes and gypsy women.
In summer 2005, the new art gallery in the Groninger Museum is showing an excellent exhibition dealing with a substantial resource of German Expressionist works. These were acquired during and after the most active period of the movement by various galleries, museums and private buyers in the Netherlands.
