When our clients were making the move from the city to suburbs, they knew they wanted a home that came with some built-in character. Often, you just can’t replicate the feeling of a home that has been lived in, has stood the test of time. What they found was a perfect blend of a stately Georgian and cozy English cottage, built in 1965. The bones were there — solid wood doors, beautiful wood trim and door casings, elaborate built-ins — but it needed some updating to bring it to life again, and turn it into both an oasis for the family, and also a spot made for entertaining. Transforming this gem was so much fun! First, the foyer. Aged grasscloth wallpaper had become a little dreary in a space with limited natural light, so we replaced it with detailed moulding — extending up the stairs — making the foyer feel polished and grand. The foyer walls are painted in Benjamin Moore Pale Oak, with trim in Kendall Charcoal. The original arched door to the basement is one of the defining features of the home. To further highlight it, we added an arched entry to the living room, also. Now, when […]

We are so fortunate to live and work in a community that places a high value on giving back. It is one of the things that really sets Glen Ellyn apart, and makes us so proud to live and work here. An example of this philanthropy that is near and dear to our hearts is the annual Glen Ellyn Housewalk, sponsored by the Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare Society. The Infant Welfare Society was founded nearly 100 years ago as a means to improve the lives of those in need in Glen Ellyn and our surrounding communities through fundraising and community service. They partner with over a dozen area organizations to reach at-risk children, and 100% of the funds they raise through their various events go directly to these partners. It is sometimes easy to get caught up in our own trials and tribulations, but with nearly 10% of DuPage county residents living at or below the poverty level, there are others who need our help. Our support of the Infant Welfare Society allows us to make a direct impact on our communities, and of course, the Housewalk is an event that intersects with our work, so it is all the […]

We visited the L.A. area last week and were so excited for our first stay in the award-winning Kelly Wearstler-designed Proper Hotel. You know with maximalist-loving Wearstler that there will be fascinating details around every corner and Proper was no exception. But, unlike many of Wearstler’s other projects, earthy neutrals reign supreme here. Wearstler took inspiration from the beach, only a few blocks away, incorporating elements throughout that echo the seaside. Take the wood reception desk covered in striations reminiscent of a seashell. Or the curved headboards in each guest room, evoking the sunset. Or the intricate pattern on the floor, resembling the top of an open umbrella. You can count on Wearstler to be both inspired AND inspiring. In addition to boasting these thoughtful design elements, Proper Hotel delivers on a luxury hotel stay. From the cocktails and fine dining scene (we loved the Meze platter!), to Surya, the Ayurvedic spa, to the thoughtfully layered guest rooms and super chic rooftop pool, Proper feels like a true getaway.

I can tell you the exact moment I fell in love with cane furniture. I know, that’s oddly specific but it’s true. Many years ago while visiting a dear friend in sunny California, I remember going to their friend’s beautiful home in Malibu, swooning over the owner’s cool girl digs especially her gorgeous cane credenza. It was gifted to her from the previous owner of her home who had originally purchased it somewhere in LA’s Chinatown. I’d like to think she knew it made the room, so despite her leaving, she must of thought, naturally it had to stay. Either way, it was beautiful against fresh white walls, her rose colored surfboard propped up against its worn edge. Stacks of records’ colored spines peeking through the weaved cane of the cabinet doors across the front. So simple but such a showstopper. Something about it felt so effortless. So easy. The organic texture and sandy color anchored an otherwise eclectically dressed room adding balance while tying in some of the more rooted natural elements of the tranquil outdoors. While we all may not be as lucky with gifted gems like that credenza, there are a myriad of ways you use cane […]

After recently stumbling across this gorgeous hotel in Cabo San Lucas, here at Park & Oak we are celebrating Cinco de Mayo by dreaming of a trip to Mexico. Esperanza is part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, known for their extraordinary luxury vacation properties throughout the world. It sits on a private beach in Los Cabos, the stretch of Baja coastline that connects Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo. With cliffside dining, a multi-tiered oceanfront pool, palapa-topped spa, and special touches around every corner, it would make for a spectacular getaway. And we always appreciate accommodations with style – the Esperanza outfits its rooms with Mexican art, hand-tooled leather furnishings, driftwood accents and gray-washed wood floors. Each room feels exclusive, with ocean views and private balconies. Some even boast palapa ceilings and plunge pools. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? Be right back…booking our trip.
Still giddy over seeing my Glen Park project in Architectural Digest last week, I thought I'd pull back the curtain and share a bit more about the process of transforming this home! The homeowners Sean and Caitlin were repeat clients - we worked together on their previous home in San Francisco's Mission District in 2020. After a few years they realized they wanted more space, and a bit more peace and quiet - which is what attracted them to San Francisco's Glen Park neighborhood, a cozy enclave
Talk about a massive discount! The asking price of a San Francisco mansion has now been slashed 32 per cent from its original $12.5million asking price in September 2017.

At last. Sweater weather EVERY DAY. Bring it on. Make a little soup to go with your sweaters. October is American Cheese Month. Artisanal, American-made cheeses were reborn in the last 20 years, with much credit due to Anne Saxelby of Saxelby Cheesemongers, who passed away last week at 40. She was the original champion of craft American cheesemakers, and the food world will miss her leadership. Read more about Anne here, and make a cheese board this weekend in her honor. Traveling soon? Maybe to Hotel Jerome? Love this Wegner-inspired counter stool. Wouldn’t these be cute in the kiddos’ bedroom or bath? Here’s what we’re reading this week. Anyone else suddenly find themselves with a crush on Stanley Tucci?? See you next week!

Aspen is typically synonymous with skiing and other winter activities, but Christina just took the most incredible fall trip to the Aspen-Snowmass area, with lodging in a captivating must-stay hotel. If you are looking for a getaway out west, Aspen has it all, regardless of the season. Read on for details about the hotel and some of the activities she enjoyed! Hotel Jerome Hotel Jerome marries western culture with impeccable design and modern sensibilities for a visually stunning property, inside and out. Every space is beautifully layered, with reminders peppered throughout the property that the hotel’s provenance dates back to 1889, and this was once the Wild West. Jerome was Aspen’s original luxury hotel. After the 1893 silver bust, it survived as a boardinghouse through the Great Depression until Aspen was reborn as a resort destination following World War II. Movie stars and celebrities flocked to Jerome throughout the mid-20th century, and in the 1980s it underwent a full restoration, bringing it one step closer to the grand property it is today. In 2018, a full-scale renovation returned Jerome to a destination in and of itself. Activities The hotel can help book activities for a perfect fall getaway. Always dreamed […]
via Le Colonial Trying to squeeze in a dinner with old friends during the holiday season? We love these seven Chicago restaurants for their commitment to excellent food AND striking interiors. 1. Le Colonial https://www.lecolonialchicago.com/ Le Colonial has been a Chicago institution for over 25 years. Its famed original Chicago location on Rush street made a move around the corner two years ago. But the seductive interiors and upscale French-Vietnamese menu remains. 2. RL Restaurant https://www.ralphlauren.com/global-rl-chicago Taking clubby to the chicest extreme, with a menu that is classic, not trendy. Kind of like us. 😉 3. Proxi https://www.proxichicago.com/ Nestled into a former printing house, with nods to both mid-century and global style, the restaurant is a repeat winner of the coveted Bib Gourmand designation, awarded by the Michelin guide to restaurants that serve great food at approachable prices. 4. Cira https://thehoxton.com/chicago/cira-restaurant/ Also a Bib Gourmand honoree, Cira’s flavors are classic Mediterranean. Settle into the warm, inviting space and stay awhile. 5. Celeste https://www.celestechicago.com/ Housed in a historic building in River North, Celeste is swanky, with an unmistakeable art deco vibe. Though it is known primarily for its cocktails, the kitchen menu will have a perfect accompaniment to your cucumber collins. […]
There’s something kinda magical about velvet. It starts with a mysterious origin story that begins in the Far East with some of the earliest Chinese dynasties. The skill and craft then spread to the Middle East and even northern Africa before establishing its industry in Italy around the 12th century. Due to the difficult nature of its construction and access to its materials, velvet was primarily used in the homes and dress of royalty and nobility or in the elaborate vestments of the ecclesiastics of the church. Not until the Industrial Revolution was the construction of this ancient textile mechanized making it easier to produce and therefore more accessible. Nowadays, velvet is loved across the spectrum of design and fashion from the boldly eclectic to the edited traditionalist. Whether you want a maximalist space with multiple velvet pieces in moody colors or just a few opulent tactile accents in neutral tones for texture and dimension, velvet is your workhorse. There are so many different ways to use velvet! Get super comfy in your family room with a deep set velvet covered couch or sectional: Try some lux velvet chairs in a your dining space. It’s a surefire way to impress […]
