Earlier this year I came across a beautiful block print tablecloth that I immediately fell in love with. The price point was a little high so I tucked the idea away in my head thinking it would be a fun DIY project to try some day. I love creating seasonal tablescapes and when I had

Avocado is one of my most favorite dye sources. We eat a lot of avocados at home and therefore have quite a substantial amounts of avocado skins and stones left. If you’ve read Botanical Colour at your Fingertips, you’ll be familiar with pretreating fabric with soya (soy) milk. It’s a method for preparing fabric before dyeing to achieve darker colours and improve colourfastness. The soy bean protein in the milk coats cellulose (plant) fibres which makes them act more like protein fibres, such as wool...

Last week I raved about the gorgeous Classic Quilt Block, the Sawtooth Star. This week I have a step by step tutorial so you can sew your own block, and if you've never sewn one before you're in for a treat. It's an easy block to sew and hopefully you used last week's colouring sheet to plan your own block. I'll be making a 6" (finished) block and at the end of the tutorial there's a chart of cutting measurements for six different sizes - 4", 6", 8", 10", 12" and 15". You'll be able to use this chart for all your future projects. As I mentioned last week, a combination of squares and flying geese units is the easiest way to construct the Sawtooth Star block. No matter how accurate you cut, flying geese units can become a little wonky due to the diagonally cut triangles. In this tutorial and my chart, I've added a little extra to the square measurement for the smaller triangles to avoid any wonky units. You can trim the units down to size after sewing. So here we go: From your background fabric cut: 1 x 4 1/4" square cut diagonally twice to yield 4 triangles (B) 4 x 2" squares (D) From your print fabric cut: 1 x 3 1/2" square (A) 4 x 2 1/2" squares cut diagonally to yield 8 triangles (C) To make the flying geese units, sew a print (C) triangle to the left short side of each of the four background (B) triangles, along the long sides using a 1/4" seam. Set each seam with your iron and then finger press the seam towards the print fabric. Press the seams with your iron. Sew a print (C) triangle to the right short side of each of the four background (B) triangles, along the long sides using a 1/4" seam. Set each seam with your iron and then finger press the seam towards the print fabric. Press the seams with your iron. Carefully trim each of the four flying geese units to 2" x 3 1/2". Arrange the four flying geese units, the four background (D) squares and the print (A) square into three rows of three blocks as shown in the photo above, ensuring correct orientation of all units. Sew the units together into the three rows, pressing seams in alternate directions. Carefully matching all seams, sew the three rows together along the long sides and pressing the seams open to complete your Sawtooth Star block which should measure 6 1/2" square when complete. Tada! How fun and easy was that? One gorgeous Sawtooth Star ready for your next project. The following chart gives you all the cutting measurements for six sizes - 4", 6", 8" 10" 12" and 15" square. Each size is constructed in the same manner, but you will need to use the chart to determine the cutting requirements for each block size. You can download and print the Sawtooth Star Cutting Chart by clicking the link or right click on the photo below and save to your computer for reference: To use the chart simply chose the finished sized block you require and cut all pieces (A-D) as required. I've included the unfinished size of the flying geese units to help you with your trimming. I hope you enjoy sewing your own Sawtooth Star blocks. Next week I'm giving you lots of inspiration to add traditional twists to this Classic Quilt Block and I have a free block pattern for you to try. I think you'll love this block, it's fun and pretty and it finishes at 8" square, so you'll be able to use it for lots of projects. Happy quilting :)
Happy Independence Day to all of my American friends! I hope you're all having fun celebrating with friends and family. At my house, we're especially excited because my son, Luke, is home for the first time since he joined the Air Force in February! It feels like old times and I will be shedding more than a few tears when he has to leave for his new base. In honor of the holiday, I created a patriotic wreath using Tim Holtz's Sizzix Rosette Die. I wish I could claim this as my own idea, but I can't! I found it while browsing on Pinterest (tell me I'm not the only one addicted to that site!). It's from All You magazine. I adapted it to my own taste and what I had on hand. The paper is from a pad that I've had for years and never used. That's why I hoard - you just never know when something will come in handy! Since the directions called for different sizes, and I don't have the Mini Rosettes die (yet!), I had to improvise. Here's a quick tute to show you how to downsize your regular rosette to make a smaller one. Cut paper using Sizzix Rosette Die. Using your scissors or paper cutter, cut off about 1/4" from the straight edge. On the reverse side, run a strip of tissue tape down the length. You need the tape to keep the segments together, since you cut off the solid edge. After taping, trim off about four segments from the end. Pleat and glue as you would a regular sized rosette. That's it! It's surprising how much smaller this is after trimming such a small amount off, but it really makes a huge difference. I can honestly say after making so many rosettes (about 40!), I am a Master Rosette Maker. A sensei of rosettery, if you will. I am also proud to say that I came out on the other side of this project with not one finger burned after extremely heavy glue gun usage. ;-) Have a great week!

I've recently been looking into making more Chinese New Year crafts together as a way to celebrate the upcoming holiday. With my current infatuation with watercolor crafts, we recently made these watercolor painted paper fans together. Watercolor Painted Paper Fans This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support! Our Favorite Chinese New Year Books Prior to making the craft, we had already been reading books explaining the holiday. Here are some of our favorites! The Runaway Wok Bringing In the New Year My First Chinese New Year Lion Dancer: Ernie Wan's Chinese New Year Celebrating Chinese New Year Is it just me or are watercolor crafts like the best? The colors are always so vibrant and it's easy to make lovely, colorful art (and it doesn't require much clean up or prep too- score!) We've recently been going through some transitions over here when I gave birth to my second son. He's been such a gift to our family, but navigating transitions (even good ones) have never been my strong point. Luckily, painting and crafting make me feel happy... so I really enjoyed making these beautiful fans! Materials Needed: Ok, all you need for this craft are: Paper (We use drawing paper for the watercolors, but you can just use plain old computer paper too if you decide to go another route.) Other drawing tools (Markers, Crayons, these cool twistable crayons, Sharpies) Stapler Tape Let's Make Some Watercolor Painted Paper Fans You could go 3 routes when making these fans. Option 1: You could just draw/paint whatever comes to mind.... I made this design by drawing a bunch of dots randomly on the page with Sharpie marker and then connecting them with lines to make triangles. I find geometric shapes to be quite modern and aesthetically pleasing, don't you? Then, I just painted all the shapes in. Option 2: Plan a specific Design- Think in halves! Or, you could try to make a specific design on the fan. We'll be folding these fans in half, so imagine the paper divided in half and draw two different designs on each half. I also wanted to make a dragon fan for Chinese New year, so I drew this pattern out. (You can download it over here Chinese New Year Dragon Printable Fan ). When it's folded it makes a completed dragon fan. My son really liked this one, so he spent most of the time coloring it in... and then telling me that he didn't want to turn it into a fan. Oh well! Once you've finished your design, accordion fold it. Then, fold it in half. Staple yourself a handle and tape the two sides together. Spread your fan out and admire your completed design! Oh! Here's what the stripey design looked like folded. I went a bit crazy with painting and made several. Aren't they pretty? Option 3: Fold first, then paint! And... if you want to, you could also just fold up a bunch of these first and then paint them. That's another option too! (The stripey fan on the lower right corner was painted that way.) Another cute fan craft: Now if you liked making this paper fan craft, you should also check out my folding popsicle stick fans. They're a bit more work, but they also are a bit cooler because you can open and close them! Hope you have a fun time making these with your kiddos. Let's Keep in Contact! You can always find more fun ideas on my Pinterest, Facebook, or Instagram accounts! Happy making!
