This Goldilocks and The 3 Bears Interactive Book is perfect for early language development and reading skills. Adapted books are activities that are modified to fit a child's specific needs and is often found in special education or autism classrooms. They usually include visual supports and tactile objects that allow the student to actively participate in the book. By incorporating these activities in your special education literacy program it increase attention due to the familiar stories/pictures & hands-on nature and also increases phonemic awareness by the use of high frequency words. The reading comprehension page is a great way to assess the student's understanding of the story. I, of course, LOVE to create individualized books that cater towards my kiddos' interests. A few of my students love movies and animated characters. One of my students often threw or ripped books, but once we used laminated custom books that catered towards her interests she was able to build not only tolerance but enjoyment! So I knew I HAD to make some books centered around classic movies and stories, and I hope your class loves these too! ----------------------------------------------------- Who would benefit from Adapted Books? Speech therapy, autism, developmental delay, special education or preschool & primary classrooms Students who lack interest in reading regular books or worksheets Students who LOVE movies and animated characters Hands-on learners Students who often rip papers or put papers in mouth (due to lamination) Students who thrive on repetition Students who need visual supports when learning ----------------------------------------------------- Adapted Book Benefits: Increased story comprehension Higher engagement Matching pictures practice Build fluency with frequently used sight words or personally meaningful words to the child Build vocabulary Could be used to teach a skill (ex. Social Story) ----------------------------------------------------- How to use this resource: 1. Print, Cut & laminate each sheet and the PECs so you can use it year after year & student after student! 2. Add hard velcro on the back of the PECs & soft velcro on the squares of the book. 3. Bind together with coils OR hole punch for duotang/binder. 4. Read with student, encouraging them to point to the words. 5. Student can remove the PEC from the side, to match under each picture. 6. Optional: Print & laminate the reading comprehension page & attach to the back of the book for students to circle the answer with dry erase marker. ----------------------------------------------------- Format Book Pages: Slide 5-14 Reading Comprehension: Slide 15 Picture PECS: Slide 16 ----------------------------------------------------- Find more similar resources here: Adapted Books Literacy Activities I really hope you enjoy this activity :) I would love if you can give me a FOLLOW, all your support is so appreciated <3 I will continue to upload more resources and FREEBIES soon! Fairy Tale STEM Activity - Goldilocks and the Three Bears Try a hands-on STEM challenge with Goldilocks and the Three Bears! This STEM activity is designed for lower elementary kids. I am so excited to share some details about it! STEM tales introduce the youngest budding engineers to STEM, by taking a familiar story and using it to walk through the engineering design process. Do you love telling and re-telling stories with your kids? Do you ever change the ending to spice it up a bit? That's exactly what STEM tales is all about! Integrate Literacy and STEM with Fairy Tales The 8-page book provides an alternative ending to this story. Your students need to help make a bed for Goldilocks. Goldilocks is simply a printed out figure, which you can add weigh to with either small masses, pennies, or washers. Using whatever crafting materials you have handy (index cards and tape are really all that is needed, but feel free to use other supplies as well), create a new bed for Goldilocks. The Testing Phase of the STEM Challenge Is the bed large enough? Will it hold the weight of the figure? You will be surprised at the designs your students come up with! Designing and creating a bed for Goldilocks is a way for students to bring the fairy tale alive. After you have tested out the beds, it's time to introduce the bear family to the challenge (mama, papa, and baby, who is the same size as Goldilocks). You will add heavier weights to mama and papa bear, and then test the designs again. This is a great way to demonstrate why it's important to know your design criteria before starting a STEM challenge! Mama bear may fit on some and not others, or papa bear may fit but weigh too much and collapse the bed. Get the Goldilocks Fairy Tale STEM Challenge Here is the link to the full resource. In addition to all the steps above, the 8-page story book guides students through the engineering design process and also includes a self-evaluation check list. We are starting our unit on Bears! Last week we read many versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Part of our work on the story included this story map. It is made for kindergarten students, but would be appropriate for first grade too. They drew pictures to show their ideas and then I labeled the drawing or wrote the dictation about what what happening in each part of the story. First, the kiddos worked on the setting and characters. I love this colorful busy picture that includes all sorts of details. She put the beds outside the house because she wanted to include some of the items from inside the house in the picture. This little boy drew just the house, but added the different sized bowls and had me label them. This was a great characters picture. So darn cute! Then on another day, students did pictures for the beginning, middle, and end of the story. First, we did an activity together where we ordered picture cards and talked about different parts of the story. It was great to hear the kids verbally retelling the story in their own words. That is one of the things that is great about doing an activity like this - a great way to really listen carefully to the oral language of students. I love the picture of Goldilocks in this one. Her hair is great! I was so excited when this little sweetie used the word "discovered" in her dictation to me. Woo hoo! Great language! I thought my sweet little students did a great job with this activity! And I was happy with how much they were enjoying the many versions of the 3 bears stories. And, now that they have done a complete story map with a very familiar story, I can start doing these with more challenging literature. We hope you enjoy this CORE vocabulary book! This book is based on a selection of core vocabulary, or the highest frequency words in speech and writing. Remarkably, these seemingly simple words make up roughly 80% of what we say! They can be used and combined for a full variety of communicative functions (such as initiation, termination, commenting, requesting, asking, interjecting and directing others). Teaching core vocabulary allows students the chance to do more than just get their needs and wants met, but to develop authentic language skills! This CORE vocabulary adapted story was created to bring the joy of fairytales to all students. These traditional tales are rewritten using CORE vocabulary, while still maintaining their classic value. Each is told with simple, high frequency, functional language. We hope your students will enjoy practicing and reading with CORE!
