He is a legendary being primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of new growth that occurs every spring. The Green Man is most commonly depicted in a representation of a face which is made of, or completely surrounded by, leaves. Some speculate that the mythology of the Green Man developed independently in the traditions of separate ancient cultures and evolved into the wide variety of examples found throughout history. There are legends of him in which, like Osiris, he is dismembered and reborn; and prophecies connecting him with the end of time. His is the voice of inspiration to the aspirant and committed artist. He can come as a white light or the gleam on a blade of grass, but more often as an inner mood. The sign of his presence is the ability to work or experience with tireless enthusiasm beyond one’s normal capacities. In this there may be a link across cultures, because one reason for the enthusiasm of the medieval sculptors for the Green Man may be that he was the source of every inspiration. I was about four when I became infatuated with Mythology and through that love, discovered the Green Man, who was not an atypical God, but a being present on the earth which to me was obviously and quite simply the emanation of God overseeing the tasks of Nature. His presence in wild places was, and is still, palpable. At Christmas, he came to life in the form of Father Christmas - a theory which bore itself out through research and study for the parallels are too many to be coincidence. The connection between Santa Claus = Odin = The Green Man is only one of hundreds. The very similar wreaths and look between Father Christmas and the Green Man, both being the giver of gifts. .Where Mother Earth is the vessel which sustains all life and through which all life grows, the Green Man is the overseer, tending to the details of that growth. He is the spiritual warrior charged with defending Mother Earth and caring for Her creature. He embodies the entirety of Her energy, and it is as this powerful warrior soul that I have depicted him. To me, he is the perfect embodiment of God on this Earth, and of the Sacred Masculine. And a perfect beginning to this artistic journey. *** This listing is for one 4X6 mini altar art print, created on gallery photographic paper, and matted in an 5X7 black archival acid-free mat, shipped in a protective cell sleeve. .

Illustrations are unique artistic touches to home decor. Magic Murals makes it easy to have a painted decor without the mess. Our easy to install materials can come prepasted or unpasted. Select the material that works with your wall type for a superior fit. Illustration by Barbara Lanza. Materials MATERIAL COMPATIBILITY We strive to help you choose the right material for your wall mural project. Our products are designed to work on ideally prepared surfaces, preferably smooth walls with a high-quality paint and primer. While we do offer materials compatible with varying wall surface types, some paints may inhibit adhesion of peel-and-stick products, and some wall textures may not provide enough surface area to stick; a combination of those two make it even trickier. There are endless combinations of wall paint and wall textures out there and we can’t test all of them. If you're unsure, we recommend ordering swatches of our materials to test adhesion prior to installation. If you believe your wall surface may be a problem, please consider our pasted products, UltraStik™ (pre-pasted) and ProStik™ (requires paste), for a more universally compatible installation or take the necessary steps to properly prepare your wall surface as described in detail below. Modern Paint Formulations: Some modern wall paints can make self-adhesive (peel and stick) murals more challenging to install. Washable, durable, low-VOC and No-VOC paints may contain additives which can inhibit proper mural adhesion. Proper cleaning and dry time of the wall surface with a mixture of isopropyl alcohol (70%) and water (30%) MAY significantly improve the adhesion. However, we highly recommend preparing the surface in advance using a primer/sealer product like Zinsser® Gardz® by Rust-Oleum®, which can be found at most hardware stores. Use this clear coat sealant to cover the area where the mural will be applied to the wall surface. Wait at least 24 hours (preferably longer) before installing the mural. If applying to newly painted walls, wait 10-14 days before installation. Unpainted drywall, or walls with inferior paint applications, may be problematic and need attention before beginning your mural installation. Contact Us if you have questions. Wall Textures: Many walls have been treated with an added decorative texture like orange peel, knockdown, stipple, etc. For these wall surface textures, it is crucial that they are properly prepared and the right mural material is chosen for peel and stick materials. If possible, consider smoothing out your wall texture with a skim-coating of drywall compound before priming and painting; this will give the ideal wall surface with few imperfections. If skim-coating is not an option, sand any rough areas and eliminate as many high spots and ridges as possible, and consider applying a primer/sealer product like Zinsser® Gardz® by Rust-Oleum®, which can be found at most hardware stores. Use this clear coat sealant to cover the area where the mural will be applied to the wall surface. Wait at least 24 hours (preferably longer) before installing the mural. **We aim to address customer concerns such as these and provide suggestions for the best mural experience for our customers. Magic Murals cannot accept, refund or replace returned murals due to incompatible wall surfaces. Ultimately, it is the customer’s responsibility to install a mural according to its instructions and take the necessary steps to properly prepare the wall surface prior to installation.** COMPARE OUR MATERIALS Our materials feature a matte finish for extremely vibrant colors and reduced glare. The Green Man, and very occasionally the Green Woman, is a legendary being primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of new growth that occurs every spring. The Green Man is most commonly depicted in a sculpture, or other representation of a face which is made of, or completely surrounded by, leaves. The Green Man motif has many variations. Branches or vines may sprout from the mouth, nostrils, or other parts of the face, and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit. Found in many cultures from many ages around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetation deities. Often used as decorative architectural ornaments, Green Men are frequently found in carvings on both secular and ecclesiastical buildings. Some speculate that the mythology of the Green Man developed independently in the traditions of separate ancient cultures and evolved into the wide variety of examples found throughout history. In any event, this incredible green man will make a statement in your fairy garden and yard motif. This blueberry green man plaque measures L: 4.75” and W: 3.75”. A few weeks ago on the Domythic Bliss Facebook group, the Green Man came up in conversation, as should come as no surprise to any of us who know the important role he plays in the Mythic Arts. Artist and Abbot of the Beloved Order of the Green Man (B.O.G.) Shane Odom suggested that a post on his presence in house decorations might prove to be an interesting blog post. I then sent out a call for submissions. And oh my, did I receive some replies. It seems as if to quite a good number of us who find meaning in myth, legend and fairy tale, the Green Man is an important symbol to use in our home decoration. And it led me to wonder just why? What is it about the Green Man that we find so important to bring into our homes? First, let me quote from an article by Shane and Joelle Mellon to explain a bit about who the Green Man is. This article originally appeared in Faerie Magazine in Spring 2006. The term "The Green Man" came into popular usage in 1939, when it was employed by Lady Raglan for her article, "The Green Man in Church Architecture". She was examining the carvings found in many churches and cathedrals. These showed a face made of leave, sometimes with vines coming out of their mouths, noses, and eyes. Lady Raglan theorized that these "foliate heads" must bear a relationship to the leaf clad characters found in folk traditions. However, these carvings were descended from sculptures dating back to ancient Roman, Greek, and Celtic sources. To the medieval mind, vegetation, being of the material world, was sometimes associated with sins. Therefore, some of the Green Men carvings showing "disgorging" greenery appear to be in pain. However these associations with greenery were reversals, showing two sides of the same leaf, if you will. Green Men and some Green Women carvings exist that are not in pain or disfigured. These are often reposed, letting their greenery issue forth from their mouths like fountains. Indeed, many fountains throughout Europe use foliate heads to surround the spout, perhaps linking Green Men with the guardians of sacred wells and springs. Other carvings show Green Men grinning, frowning, or laughing. I can think of a few reasons why the Green Man may appeal so strongly to the mythic mind beyond his obvious role as supernatural being or deity as he appears in some personal spiritualities. He represents transformation: the in-between quality of someone who is neither fully human being nor fully leaf and twig. The Green Man quite literally represents bringing the spirit of the natural world into our domesticated lives. To hang a Green Man image in a house is to invite the essence of nature into a place where we have to live mostly apart from it (in our modern brick and plaster abodes). And isn't that a central goal of Domythic decorating? In addition, from a purely aesthetic point of view, the Green Man is an incredible source for artistic creativity. You can search the internet for images of artistic renderings of the Green Man all day long and still never find a repeated version. There are as many versions of the Green Man as there are species of trees in the forest. Ask Shane about this...he has been creating masterful Green Man masks from leather for years, and I still have yet to see an exact duplicate from one mask to another. Because of this incredible diversity, it is quite possible to find a version of the Green Man that appeals to practically anyone. I myself discovered this quite distinctly when I stumbled upon the below plaque at the Ohio Renaissance Festival. I had never found a version of the Green Man who so utterly enraptured me until I saw this piece. His fey eyes and gender-neutral face struck me as quite perfect, and he has hung in my home ever since. Green Men (and Green Women, too) also can be displayed in numerous forms. Gorgeous artworks like Brian Froud's "The King of the Green Men" at the top of this blog, or Maria Sender's Green Man, below, can be framed in oak wood, or put in frames covered with leaves. Green Men can also be seen in plaques and ceramic wall hangings And, perhaps most versatile, in three-dimensional masks that act not only as decoration, but also as costume at ritual and festival. Over the next couple of days, I hope to share with you more examples of Green Men as they appear in the homes of Domythic decorators. Clearly this mysterious figure of nature from so long ago still has a very real and solid presence in the modern lives of those who love enchantment!

The Green Man, a character from traditional folk culture, has captured the imaginations of many in the modern world. Books, articles, and websites on the Green Man abound, each of them looking at the figure from its own perspective. Those who have commented on or employed the image of the Green Man range from historians to neopagan worshippers, from festival organizers to novelists, and from folklorists to participants in Renaissance fairs. Recently, though, some scholars have been asserting that the Green Man is not really a figure from older folk culture at all, but a modern invention. This post will begin an examination of this question: what is the Green Man, and what are his traditional meanings?

The Green Man - Digital - 2009, Dia Sobin Well, my friends, it's that time of year again, and for those of us of paganistic persuasion, this is a day of celebration... the winter solstice. The Green Man - my interpretation above - is not normally associated with this day, but, instead, is generally associated with Beltane festivities in his guise as Jack-in-the-Green. But the Green Man is also an ancient symbol of death and rebirth... as is the Yule season. In Green Man: The Archetype of Our Oneness With the Earth, William Anderson writes: "There are legends of him (Khidr) in which, like Osiris, he is dismembered and reborn; and prophecies connecting him, like the Green Man, with the end of time. His name means the Green One or Verdant One, he is the voice of inspiration to the aspirant and committed artist. He can come as a white light or the gleam on a blade of grass, but more often as an inner mood. The sign of his presence is the ability to work or experience with tireless enthusiasm beyond one's normal capacities. In this there may be a link across cultures, …one reason for the enthusiasm of the medieval sculptors for the Green Man may be that he was the source of every inspiration." So my wish for all us is, may this season inspire wonder and magic in our psyches despite the onslaught of winter. Let's face it, 2011 was a rather brutal year... so, let's have some fun! And, I can think of no more festive song than this blast from the past, "Ring Out, Solstice Bells", from an old Jethro Tull album (and a personal seasonal favorite in the days of vinyl), "Songs from the Wood". For a further exploration of the solstice, see: Hail Winter Solstice Deus Sol Invictus.
