A sundog, or mock sun, called a parhelion (pl. parhelia) in meteorology, is an atmospheric optical phenomenon around the sun. They are caused by the refraction of sunlight by ice crystals in the atmosphere and typically appear as a pair of subtly colored patches of light, around 22° to the left and right of the Sun, at the same altitude. They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but are not always obvious or bright; best seen & most conspicuous when the Sun is near the horizon.
Sundogs are a refraction of the sun’s rays theough hexagonal ice crystals in the clouds. They are a relatively rare sighting and a symbol of good fortune to come. ✌🏻🌈
