A luminous Halloween Scene is easy to make with this DIY Shadow Box tutorial. It only takes a handful of items to get an eerie feel right in your own home!
Hi, servus and happy Halloween, dear Calico Craft Parts friends!!! I hope you are all enjoying this holiday as much as I am and are having a lot of fun! This last Halloween-ish project of mine can also be seen as a celebration of late fall - with fog blurring one's vision, the first bit of snow in higher regions, with crows in the bare trees's branches and spiders looking for a cosy place inside the house and with darkness already setting in in the afternoon. Which makes me want to look for a warm and cosy place inside too and light some candles. I have created a shadow frame - using one of Calico Craft Parts' alterable printers trays and some of their wonderful (and wide range of) autumnal and/or Halloween MDF pieces - and tried to capture what I love most about this time of the year. Calico Craft Parts used: - MDF Printers Tray Kit - Style 4 - Gothic Mansion Haunted House MDF Wood Shape - Style 4 - Flying Barn Owl MDF Wood Shape - Style 4 - Pair of Ravens on Branch MDF Wood Shape - Sheet of Mini MDF Wood Birds - Crows & Ravens - Spider MDF Wood Shape - Style 7 I kept the number of parts used and background techniques quite small so the lovely wood shapes and the papers and crackle of the background would be the stars of my make. The printers tray was glued together using DecoArt matte Decou-page and then I added torn dictionary page pieces to it quite randomly. I tried not to work too neatly so the edges would still look torn and worn. I also added a thin coat of matte Decou-Page on top to seal the surface. The wood shapes were dry brushed with DecoArt media black Gesso, so none of the beautiful detail would get lost! Next I scraped on some white DecoArt media Crackle Paste here and there using a palette knife. I left it to air dry. In the meantime I took a worn bristle brush and added strokes of a mix of black and white DecoArt media Gesso in some spots. Once the white Crackle Paste had dried I applied a thin coat of DecoArt media carbon black Antiquing Cream. I heat dried the Antiquing Cream and then wiped off the excess using a damp soft cloth. This way the cracks became more visible, the whole project was toned down and the black that had seaped into the tray's corners and edges formed a visual frame too. I used the left over parts from the MDF plate the printers tray came in to stack all my wood shapes. For my hanging device I drilled two holes into the tray's frame and fixed some rough string to it. Done! Thanks for stopping by and hugs and happy shopping and crafting with Calico Craft Parts! Claudia xxx
Hello friends! I'm so happy you've stop by today! I have a really fun Halloween project to share with you! I was so happy when I was asked to create a few projects, using Tim Holtz's new seasonal products. When I received my box of goodies, I was so excited…it felt like Christmas, my Birthday and a great vintage find all wrapped up in one! My first project is a Mini Configurations wall hanging, that will be focusing on Tim's new Halloween Idea-ology and Sizzix Cobwebs Texture Fade. I'm going to show you how to transform a mini configurations book into a spooky Undertaker Halloween wall hanging today. It all started with a Tim Holtz Mini Configurations Book. An 8x10 clearance open back frame. You know that isle at the craft store that everything is ridiculously cheap in because it has some dents, dings and chips to it, well it was perfect for this Halloween project! A plain 8 x 10 flatback canvas! To start with I painted a layer of Black Soot Distress Paint onto the canvas. Then let dry thoroughly. I sanded the canvas a little with a sanding grip to expose some of the texture. Then added some Vintage Photo Distress Paint here and there using a baby wipe to move the color around so that it created more of a wash. After that was thoroughly dried, I stamped some texture onto the canvas using the scribbles stamps in the Slight Alterations stamp set with Walnut Stain Distress Paint. It's very subtle, but I love the affected it give to the overall aesthetics of the piece. I took the configuration inserts out of the book and set them aside, I didn't paint them because they will be covered with paper and designer tape. I gave my Configuration Book a base coat of Black Soot Distress Paint on the inside and out. After that was thoroughly dried I used a combination of Hickory Smoke, Walnut Stain, Black Soot, Vintage Photo and Antique Linen Distress Paints to give the appearance of a vintage book. After that was thoroughly dried, I stamped some texture onto the book using the scribbles stamps in the Slight Alterations stamp set with Walnut Stain Distress Paint. For the front of my book, I cut a piece of paper from the new Regions Beyond Paper Stash, distressed and inked the edges. I die cut the headstone out of grungeboard and distressed with Black Soot, Hickory Smoke and Peeled Paint Distress Paints. I stamped the Undertaker (one of Tim's new stamp sets) with Jet Black Archival ink on vintage book paper and cut out. Then shaded him with Walnut Stain Distress Ink. I added the number 31 from the new Wicked Alpha Parts and colored this with Distress Paints. Then applied Glossy Accents to give a shellacked appearance. I also used an Oddities Adornment adhered with a Regions Beyond Fastener pearl brad. It was distressed with Iced Spruce Distress Paint and Mushroom Alcohol Ink. I painted and distressed a Cabinet Card with Crackle and Brushed Corduroy Distress Paint. That awesome cobweb is one of the new Halloween Texture Fades, I love it! First I cut out a plastic transparent sheet and ran it through my Vagabond using the Cobwebs Halloween Texture Fade. I wanted to dull the appearance of the shiny plastic, so I brushed a thin layer of Matte Glue n Seal onto the surface. After that dried thoroughly, to bring out the cobwebs I applied a little Black Soot Distress Paint with a blending tool just to the raised portions of the web. I wanted to distress the cobwebs even further, so I applied a little Mushroom Alcohol Ink sporadically to the surface. I attached some of the spiders from the Gothic Industrious Stickers Set and distressed with Mushroom Alcohol Ink. I distressed a Skull and Crossbones with Iced Spruce Distress Paint and Mushroom Alcohol Ink and attached to spine of book. For the inside of the cover I selected some paper from the Regions Beyond Paper Stash and the skeleton is from the Frightful Ephemera pack. I inked and distressed the edges before attaching to the inside cover. I used the Linen Ribbon to create a band for the ephemera, attaching black pearl Regions Beyond Fasteners to each end of the ribbon ( I did actually cut the brad portion off and just glue them to the linen ribbon). Then hung one of the spider charms from the Oddities Adornments. It was distressed with Iced Spruce paint and Mushroom Alcohol Ink. All the papers used on the inside of configurations throughout are from the Regions Beyond Paper Stash. I colored most of the glass vials with alcohol inks. This glass dome also got some crackle to it as well. All of the configurations have been framed with Regions Beyond Design Tape. I attached one of the spider charms from the Oddities Adornments on a Shield Charm. It was distressed with Iced Spruce paint and Mushroom Alcohol Ink. Then hung up with a Ring Fastener and a little chain. For this configuration I hung one of the Crypt Cameos wire wrapping it to a Adornment Arrow. Then glued the arrow to the Foundry Frame. The tiny spider on the glass vial is from the Curiosities Remnant Rubs. The eye is another piece from the Frightful Ephemera Pack. All of the metal, glass and plastic pieces were distressed with Iced Spruce and Mushroom Alcohol Ink. The photos from this configuration are from the Regions Beyond Paper Stash and the undertaker sign on top is from the Frightful Pack. All paper pieces were inked and distressed. I tucked a small piece of a mica tile behind the photos and some dyed cheese cloth behind the pocket watch for just a little extra something. The pocket watch is so fun! I used some of the new paper, new brad fasteners, a skeleton Oddities Adornment and a Wishbone. All pieces were distressed with Mushroom Alcohol Ink. The new Apothecary Vials are so cool, I love that they are amber…they look so authentic! I added some Wishbones in the amber Apothecary Vial and attached one of the stickers that come with the collection to the front of the vial. I painted some Heirloom Roses black and added to the clear Corked Vial. For a little something extra, I added a few drops of Silver Alcohol Ink into the vial. I let that dry thoroughly before attaching the cork. I painted and distressed the word Halloween from the Wicked Alpha Parts, using Spiced Marmalade, Peeled Paint and Hickory Smoke Distress Paint. Then added Glossy Accents for a nice shellacked look. For the last three configurations I used a new Apothecary Vial, Tiny Vial, Monocle, a rose from the Nature Adornments, a Wishbone, Ephemera from the Frightful Pack, the hand and another spider from the Curiosities Remnant Rubs and a fun Boneyard Resin Skull! All of the metal, and resin was distressed with Iced Spruce Distress Paint and Mushroom Alcohol Ink. I got a little creative with the Boneyard Resin Skull and drilled a small hole in the top of his head and screwed in a Screw Eye and hung from a Ring Fastener. After I had finished my configurations, I drilled a couple of small holes in the back of the book and the fatback canvas (making sure they lined up). I secured the configuration book to the canvas with wire and then adhered the canvas to the open back frame with some small staples. I ended up gluing all of my configurations to the inside of the book, so they would be permanent for my spooky Undertaker wall hanging. Wow, are you still with me…I hope so! I'm so excited to add this piece to my Halloween decor, I hope you give it a try! I have listed links for all the products that I used in making my Undertaker wall hanging below. There are a few items that have been retired and are no longer available, I added a few ideas to substitute. Hi all! After I discovered that Eileen Hull's Journal die could be used to make cool shadow boxes, I knew I had to make one for Halloween. With Sizzix' huge sale on Tim Holtz dies going on this weekend, I thought it was the perfect time to create a spooky assemblage featuring some of my favorite dies of Tim's. The best part is they are all on sale right now! I used one of my all-time favorite dies on the front of my book/box. This Boo die is so awesome! I've used it on so many projects and I never get tired of it. Underneath it I've used the Mini Baroque Movers and Shapers die - another fave. I cut the Boo out of chipboard, then painted it black and covered it with black glitter. So pretty! Along the bottom I added a strip of bats cut from black kraft core'dinations using Tim's Bats and Crossbones Garland die. Ack! So much spooky goodness! And I'm really excited about how this Mini Clipboard die cut turned out. Yes, that's a die! I made it look realistic by first covering the front and back of a piece of chipboard with foil tape. I die cut it using the Mini Clipboard Movers and Shapers die, then aged it with black and silver alcohol inks. So cool! I used the Mini Spider and 31 die set for the perfect embellishments. Beware was cut from black kraft core'dinations using a die from the Halloween Words set. Here's a shot of the Mini Clipboard die before I assembled it. The piece with the brads was cut freehand from a leftover piece of the chipboard. It's attached to the book cover, then the clip piece is adhered on top using foam dots to give it dimension. I also added grooves with a stylus and rounded the bottom to make it look more real. Just like in my Christmas book shadow box, I used dollar store jewelry boxes to create my niches. They're covered with papers from Tim's Halloween collection, and edged with design tape. I found these cute witches via Pinterest on this site. I cut them apart and sized them to make them fit the space. (I didn't realize until today that this image is also included in one of Tim's Found Relatives collections. Depending on the size, those may not fit the space the same.) They were colored with Distress markers and adhered with foam dots. Tim's Gothic Gate die adds a bit of texture behind them. To cover the seam between the two boxes, I cut a strip of skulls using the Bats and Crossbones die and adhered it. A few witchy embellishments to fill the bottom niche and I was done! You can find all the dies I used at Sizzix (ON SALE!!) via the image below. To give you an idea of how good the prices are, the Boo die is marked down to $7 - it's normally $19.99!! Some of these dies will most likely be discontinued, so grab them while you still can. Shipping is free when you order $99 or more. Eileen's Journal die is finally back in stock and it's a great time to pick up one of those as well! My favorite chipboard to use with Eileen's ScoreBoard dies is the medium weight chipboard from Amazon: Thanks so much for stopping by today! I hope you enjoyed the Halloween version of the Eileen Hull Journal shadow box. I really had a blast making it! :) I'm entering this into Frilly and Funkie's 'Tis Near Halloween challenge. Be sure and check out all the wonderful inspiration from some of the best designers I know! Have a fantastic weekend!

Hello friends... Today, I'm sharing the first of the projects that I created for idea-ology and Tim's FB Live which if you missed, then...
A little witch conjuring up a spell as her curious woodland animal friends watch in anticipation. Or a little girl dressed up as a witch trick-or-treating on Halloween. Perfect for Halloween and year-round too! This Halloween centerpiece is made of new and vintage parts. This shadowbox centerpiece includes a light show! There is an on and off switch on the back of the frame that illuminates the spooky scene in the dark. Sure to wow onlookers on Halloween night! I made this one-of-a-kind, spell casting little witch scene using vintage and new elements set within a plastic shadow box. You can set this piece on any flat surface or hang it on a wall. All elements in this piece are permanently adhered to the shadow box. The jack-o'-lantern is the only moveable piece and can be placed on or off of the witch's arm. The witch’s eyes shut when the piece is set on its back. Her arms are moveable. This piece is approximately 8 inches tall and almost 8 inches at the widest part. Please note that the parts of this piece that are vintage are The Wizard of Oz witch, the jack-o'-lantern, the cat, and the owl made of bone china. Please review the photos provided carefully. Please let me know if you have any questions. This is a handmade piece and will occasionally show things like minor glue residue that all happened during the hand making process. Thank you for looking! Here are a few quick pictures of the Haunted House silhouette that we display on our mantel every few years. I don't have it completely set up, but thought I would add some pictures while I am thinking about it. I made this 10 or more years ago and unfortunately, it is really starting to show it's age. This is a large two piece silhouette, which was cut out of heavy duty poster board. The tree (on left), small hill (that you can barely see on the right) and small flying bats are part of the back piece; which is placed against the wall. The house, grass, gravestones and fence pillars are part of the front piece; which is placed about 5-6 inches in front of the back section. It is lit using a long light, which is sandwiched between the front and back sections. It's been 10 years, and I still remember this silhouette being a CHALLENGE to make. The poster board was thick and really difficult to cut through. OMG, cutting out those fine details...let's just say, I remember learning several new swear words while working on it. I can't imagine having to eventually redo it. Oh, I do love it though! Blessings, Tracy

I rescue discarded wooden furniture and household items from alleys, and search junk shops for discarded mementos and old photos that have stories to tell. My Chicago studio is filled with shelves of labeled bins containing carefully sorted items other people have tossed out. One person's trash.
