The debate on whether a design is good or bad is a never-ending one. From terrible public space "solutions" to ideas so bad, it’s hard to believe someone came up with them, we've covered plenty of the latter over the years. So how about we balance out the scales a little bit?
It’s easy to mistake Irma Gruenholz’s whimsical ceramic figures for two-dimensional illustrations. The Madrid-based artist (previously) is known for her sculptures and still lifes in clay that resemble flat graphics and drawings, although her works require precise positioning and photographing before they’re printed in the pages of a magazine or children’s book. In addition to working on commissions for major publications and brands in the last few years, Gruenholz’s most recent projects include four imaginative figures tattooed with foliage and sprouting leafy branches from their heads. Seattle-based artist Carol Milne (previously) fabricates flowing glass sculptures that mimic the delicate patterns of knit yarn. Contrary to the assumption that Milne has the super-human ability to knit strands of molten glass by hand, the artist instead devised a somewhat complicated process that involves wax casting, mold-making, and kiln-casting. She discusses her techniques in detail in this video from Heather DiPietro. Over the last year, Milne’s artwork has appeared in the 9th Cheongju International Craft Competition, in the Creative Knitting show at the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum, and at the Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts. Taking inspiration from a historical event, this depiction of Vergogna Phryne displays an abundance of emotion that has been skillfully captured by the sculptor. Based on a Jean-Léon Gérôme painting, the subject has been acquitted of blasphemy in ancient Greece. Her real name is Mnēsarétē and she was judged to be too beautiful to be guilty. Her serene nature and alluring charm has been superbly portrayed by Enigma craftsmen, and anyone who sees this marvellous statue will admire the classical figure that's wrapped in delicate robes. Crafted in smooth-to-the-touch crushed marble and resin that has a superb bronze finish, this is a statue that can provide an appealing focal point in any garden or act as a stunning interior piece. The first time I went to Greece in 1982 I particularly appreciated this beautiful statue. The "horny" Pan making unwelcome advances to the beautiful Aphrodite seemed so lifelike. I revisited it again in 2004. Still beautiful :) She is holding her sandal in her right hand just about to whack Pan. I am not too sure if Eros is encouraging or discouraging Pan, though.
Madrid-based sculptor Irma Gruenholz refers to her work as "three-dimensional illustration." Her quirky style lends itself to imaginative scenes, which she renders in clay rather than digitally or in any other medium. In her humorous work, offbeat characters interact with one another or with animal companions. Many of her pieces have a storybook-like quality, as if they are part of a narrative we can't quite grasp. Take a look at some of her latest works below.

Washington-based artist Beth Cavener sculpts human-sized animals from clay and other materials in both dramatically overt and subtly ambiguous displays of emotion. Hung from ropes or pinned to walls, the anthropomorphic sculptures are infused with juxtapositions that depict the extremes of both human emotion and animalistic behavior: predator and prey, love and hate, fear and peace. “On the surface,” shares Cavener, “these figures are simply feral animals suspended in a moment of tension. Beneath the surface, they embody the consequences of human fear, apathy, aggression, and misunderstanding.” Cavener collaborates with a variety of artists in her work, including Alessandro Gallo, who designed and painted the ornate Japanese tattoos on the nineteen-foot long anaconda snake depicted in Tangled Up in You seen below.
