About A stunning early 20th century Heriz Serapi rug. Heriz rugs are Persian rugs from the area of Heris, East Azerbaijan in northwest Iran, northeast of Tabriz. Such rugs are produced in the village of the same name in the slopes of Mount Sabalan. Heriz carpets are extremely durable and hard-wearing and they can last for generations. 19th century examples of such carpets are often found on sale by major auction houses in United States and Europe. New Herizes are thick, tough, and often reasonable in price. Such rugs age well and become more and more beautiful with age. Part of the reason for the toughness of Heriz carpets is that Mount Sabalan sits on a major deposit of copper. Traces of copper in the drinking water of sheep produces high quality wool that is far more resilient than wool from other areas.[citation needed] Heriz rug weavers often make them in geometric, bold patterns with a large medallion dominating the field. Such designs are traditional and often woven from memory. Heriz rugs are of coarse construction. The rugs range from 30 kpsi on the low end to 100 10 kpsi on the high end. It is rare to see a rug over 100 kpsi that would look like an authentic Heriz unless it is an antique silk Heriz.

Beautiful Antique Heriz/Serapi, Circa Date: 1920 – This gorgeous antique Persian Heriz rug is meant to convey warmth and vibrancy, present in every color skillfully chosen to define the antique rug. The darker tones stand out well against the lighter ones, and the cool and warm colors add an even deeper degree of contrast that provide viewers with plenty of points of interest to observe and explore. Like many, of the best antique Persian Serapi Heriz rugs, this one uses angular shapes and rigid patterns to better define the landscape. This results in a much more pronounced degree of grounding, a theme that is present in every section of the antique Persian rug, from the exquisite borders to the strikingly active heart of the masterpiece.

COLLECTING AND CONNOISSEURSHIP A small portion of the Oriental rugs available today are recognized as on par with the finest paintings, sculpture and other mediums, yet are dramatically undervalued relative to them. Working closely for over four decades with Mr. Winitz and his staff, clients are assembling caches of those rare, unique examples that remain in good condition.
Dimensions: 8'0" x 11'2" (244 cm x 340 cm). Circa: 1920. Colors: arapawa, black, blue, brown, gray. Fine 19th-century antique Serapi carpets include some of the most rare and desirable large size decorative Persian carpets. Woven in the rugged mountains of Northwest Persia, Serapi rugs are a distinct Heriz region style, with finer knotting and more large-scale spaciously placed antique carpet designs than other rugs from this area. Although it was the grandest of the antique Heriz rug styles, the Serapi rug format is seldom seen after 1910, because of the remoteness of the mountains in Northwest Persia presented. Persian carpets had to be taken by their weavers to Serab, 30 miles distant, to be marketed. “Serapi” is not a place or tribal name; rather it is a market term derived from “Serab-i,” meaning “of Serab”. Serapi antique carpets combine design elements borrowed from many traditions. The bold geometric designs are probably connected to the tribal Caucasian traditions across the Aras River to the North. The elegant court carpets of Tabriz to the West certainly would have influenced the Serapi carpet weavers’ understanding of balance and the central medallion format. Antique Serapi carpets were woven on the level of a family or small workshop with multiple weavers working several years to complete each Persian rug. The weaving was done almost exclusively by women. Highly skilled artisans, they continually reinterpreted the design as they wove, creating highly spontaneous and inventive artistry. In general, the antique Serapi rugs made in small workshops are more finely woven and formal, and Serapi carpets woven on a family level are more rustic and symbolic in design. The women of this area were master dyers able to deeply dye the superb, silky, local wool with a great range of soft-shaded or “abrashed” color. The wide palette of hues came from many carefully brewed plants and minerals, colors for which the recipes are now lost. Watermelon to terra cotta tones came from madder root. The blue tones, from sky and aqua to periwinkle and deep navy, came from the indigo plant. Gold and yellow tones are from chamomile and a variety of other plants. The Serapi carpets weavers also frequently used large areas of undyed and unbleached wool, whose ivory and camel tones provided contrast to the wide range of vegetable color. The term Serapi is given to early Heriz rugs woven in NW Persia and usually over 100 years old. They are thinner and have a finer weave with a softer floppier handle. Serapis are similar to Herizes in style being a more geometric, stylized adaptation of a Farahan Sarouk. In the drawing they have finer sharper lines giving it more clarity and elegance and have more openness in the field and borders. The well proportioned simplicity and wonderful balance of clear colors make them ideal for any contemporary setting.

Bakshis, Gorevan, Serapi and Tabriz are popular types of rugs woven in the Heriz region. The popular Heriz pattern is also made in India both in bright, deep traditional colors and also in softer earth tones. Herez is a city found in northwestern Iran in the province of Azerbijan. Some Heriz characteristics are thought to be derived from the classical Caucasian rugs of the 17th and 18th centuries. The foundation is usually cotton with a wool pile. Heriz rugs usually have a classic medallion and corner design. They can have all over patterns but are more often seen with a large geometric medallion and are notorious for their durability. Heriz rugs are very recognizable due to their strong floral geometric angular designs. Material: Wool Origin: India Hand Knotted Rug # 80024580

The Persian Serapi rugs belong to a family of regional Persian rugs. These rugs were produced in the persiaian province of Eastern Azerbaijan and the area surrounding Heriz. The village of Serab (or Sarab), where Serapi rugs are generally attributed to, is located south of the region responsible for the eponymous Heriz rugs – the region of North West Persia – and less than 80 miles east of Tabriz. The term Serapi is often applied to the finest antique rug examples from the Heriz area. However, the Serapi designation is a hot topic that is contested by many experts. Nevertheless, Serapi rugs particularly those produced prior to the turn of the 20th century are in high demand today. Antique Serapi rugs were made by small workshops and families, which resulted in formal Persian carpets as well as those with rustic tribal influences. Local production methods contributed to the characteristic abrash that adds a textural appearance to the stark field and contrasting decorations seen in many Persian Serapi rugs. These fine antique carpets were made in many sizes and shapes ranging from elongated corridor carpets to highly desirable room-size rugs. Persian Serapi rugs feature clear colors, creamy un-dyed fleece beautifully tempered reds, warm earth tones and concentrated blues.
